Did you know that cow parsnip has both edible and poisonous characteristics? This plant contains a compound called furanocoumarins which make it phototoxic - in the presence of light the sap from this plant can cause blisters and hyperpigmentation of the skin.
Though the plant is pretty easy to distinguish with its broad, coarsely toothed, palmately lobed leaves, there's a look-alike that you have to watch out for: Giant Hogweed. This is an invasive plant that is a native of Asia, and silly gardeners thought it would look nice in their landscaping so they planted it here and it escaped. Giant Hogweed causes violent 3rd degree burns, and because of this municipalities do their utmost to get rid of it whenever it pops up. This plant looks similar to the native Cow Parsnip but is enormous: it reaches heights of 3-5 meters. The skin damage from the sap of Giant Hogweed can be permanent, so don't confuse the two.

I dont understand the chemical. How people work with almost every part of the plant and it doesnt give them blisters? It seems to not effect some people?

Hi Jason - I'm not sure! I also wonder if there are certain stages of the plant's growth where it produces more or less of the chemical. I'll do some more research!

Attractive plant and human. Is it cow slip or cows lip? I did not know it repels bugs. Informative, : )

Don't take the warning about the sap lightly. I still bear the scars 15 years on, from weedwacking a large patch of these, shirt off and on a sunny day - it was not pretty !

Hi, how do you know it's not giant hogweed? Cos the umbels and leaves are huge, and saw a bit of blotchiness on the leave stem?

Hello! Here is what I found! Go down and read the 'toxicity' section! Apparently it is dangerous.
      🌿 Cow Parsnip: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heracleum_maximum
      It's directly related to:
      🌿 Giant Hogweed:
      en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heracleum_mantegazzianum
Be careful! Have a Peaceful day 🙂

@@padkirsch hi, thanks. Common hogweed is another name for cow parsnip. It's true it has toxicity when the sap gets on the skin. Not as much as giant hogweed though.

Hey people, be very careful using it as a bug repellent.
Due to distant (more harmful) relatives with similar flowers and leaves
    a misidentification can be harmful!

Yes, you are right! I would not try it myself as misidentification is real!
