Carly Simon learns the history of her ancestors in Finding Your Roots: Season Four, Episode Two, "Unfamiliar Kin." #FindingYourRoots airs Tuesdays at 8/7C on PBS.

@@laurelledubois it’s both. In one sense, “Jews” are the descendants of the Hebrew people. Those people also have a religion that they practice. Sometimes, for one reason or another, people without the genetic connection adopt that religion (usually because they’re marrying someone who practices it). Much more often, historically, people with Jewish ancestry converted to Christianity in order to avoid persecution or expulsion from their homes. I have what I thought were generic Mediterranean looks, thanks to my Sicilian mother, but throughout my life, people would assume I was Jewish and would treat me as such (for good or for ill). Turns out they were onto something: when my DNA was analyzed, it came out 30% Jewish, and it’s clear that it’s from my mother’s side. Queen Blanca expelled the Jews of Vizzini (my ancestral village) in 1415. Evidently, I had some remote ancestors who felt more strongly about holding onto their homes than maintaining their religious practices. That’s how, generations later, my mother, who was more than half Jewish genetically, ended up being raised Roman Catholic and trying to raise her children as such. She failed in that regard. Curiously, 3 of my siblings ended up marrying Jewish people, and my gay brother had a penchant for guys named David. The call of our ancestors seems to be strong 😏
