Ai is just an excuse for tech layoffs

- We are seeing more layoffs in the tech industry once again. But is the reason because AI is finally taking over SWE? Are we doomed?
Or is this the start of more mass-layoffs in tech?

and don't forget all the federal software engineering contracting jobs that currently being cut. Americans might actually be cooked, no lie.
The best bet is to contract with an agency that doesn't have strong ties politically to any party. Currently working a contract with DOS with the new DOGE team (as they were the digital services team) and we're still pretty solid. Other folks working the healthcare.gov projects are kinda cooked though
I will add that there are so many old "processes" which make it very hard to work quickly. Our team is one of the first to implement CICD in our domain for the agency
Bro’s a full on traitor working with DOGE
@ bro they got injected into our project lol
Damn thats so lame
Very naive and ignorant perspective.
1. The makeup of layoffs is not all SWE, usually not even the majority position that is laid off at tech companies.
2. Current state of AI is not at the level that you describe that people can just automate most of their jobs.
3. Huge assumption that people are just being lazy, and it’s not just companies trying to increase their share price. Your overthinking this.
exactly this. It's just to increase the share price. Every single time.
yea I think most of the people getting fired are people that do bullshit jobs like ESG / DEI initiatives.
This is easy to say for a product that is arguably "simple" like Twitter. Not to mention the fact that it's a matter of keeping an already established product running rather than building additional products/services. The government sure as HELL isn't going to work out like this considering the breadth of work these people do. We already were having shortages within the IRS, Postal Service and Air Traffic Controllers. Some agencies have been so starved for funding they can barely do the job they've been assigned (FTC).
Not sure I would say Twitter is running perfectly fine. And a lot of those new features are pretty mid.
Twitter is running fine if you're a complete sociopath.
@@alancarroll7648 feature-wise, they are doing fine, there are some hiccups here and there but there are no fatal ones. But I am 1000% agree that you need to be sociopath to enjoy content generated there.
@@alancarroll7648 twitter is the new 4chan
The lesson is the same: Never trust cops, corporations, or criminals. All three have every incentive to lie and little deters them from doing so.
In my experience I feel that X (Twitter) has gotten worse, I keep getting unwanted information, and politics even though I don't engage with it. I only follow tech information, but I have noticed it became a lot more hateful than in the past also the blue check became worthless when it became a paid thing.
Other things, I do agree with you on that part.
That's one of the motives I just left twitter tbh
That's why it is not called twitter anymore
If I was a CEO and had an AI division, paying each 100k a year, when Alibaba or Deepseek can come in, set it up, I pay 1/10000th of that BS team's salary and save $$millions- I'd do it.
Lay off 10, save $900,000+ a year. Multiply that x probably ten.
No benefits, no sick time, no performance issues, no sexual affairs, no unfair dismissal lawsuits, no lazy office workers, no severance, no risk to company reputation, no issues.
SO much software to replace tech titles now for cheap. An ENTIRE role (ie PM) can be completely automated!
Its not "Why" it's more like of course
Going on 10 Teams meetings a day does NOT generate revenue.
Using cringe terms like "circle-back"' "leverage", "scope","execute" or 'capitulate" and doing literally nothing but stay in pyjamas or play video games trying to look busy does NOT generate revenue.
there is no performance issues when there's no performance at all
All my CEO clients are doing this. It’s AI (Artificial Intelligence or All Indians).
Salesforce is just a CRM tool
They enable you to segment a part of your userbase, track em and push them trough a marketing funnel with customer journey's in order to force conversions. But they expanded way beyond with products like issue trackers and such.
In other words they help you create and set logic on human behaviour -> Aka customer journey
I didn’t know what they did either tbh😅
salesforce has various products such as sales cloud, marketing cloud, service cloud, tableau. all of these are pretty much self explainatory
depends on _where_. the reasons are quite different in the USA and in the EU.
@zilahi8 what is the issue in the EU because am from there and I haven't figured it out yet
EU is in recession for many reasons. The war has a big influence IMO. Also there is no cheap money available as before so no expansion or new projects in the pipeline which means no need to hire more ppl. To get better the war would have to stop first followed by lower interest rates so companies can invest/hire.
The current issue in EU and US is the fucked up economy. No relation with the AI bullshit ppl might think.
German economy is shrinking due to bad govt policies around energy dependence on Russian oil and shutting down nuclear.
I think Poland is growing well. Not sure about France.
@@agostinhoneto9406 That seems indeed a good reason, do you have any articles or resources around this topic ?
Not that I don't believe you but I would like to read up on that as well.
no, majority of layoff are not SWE, are those positions that we all known are just milking money from the company and the rest of high qualified workers
Companies are no longer keeping the SWEs for maintenance once the project is done
Lol I was gonna mention Elon as soon as I saw the title. Fed employees are going through the same, unemployment is about to be at an insane high imo and lots of families potentially destroyed.
It’s a brutal brutal job market for early career devs
Start a startup!
This is also changing how the employees are being over utilized. Changing a 40 hour work week to 60 plus and holding folks work visas over them of course will allow you to "trim" the workforce.
The problem seems to be a cascading effect of following the captain. It's CEO's and businesstypes convincing other CEO businesstypes that developers aren't needed anymore because of AI. Musk started this trend and others are blindly following along without understanding what they are doing and why they are doing it. Well they understand short term profit but lack the foresight for long term business. They don't have to, because they aren't really held accountable for their bad practices, ever. They may rarely get fired, but soon they'll be in a similar position at another company. The workers are the ones who pay from their mistakes.
Yet a first victim to this already happened. A company had fired all their software developers to replace them with Claude, but the codebase was so large the AI was unable to understand it and everything got broken by the businesstypes. The CEO was writing in panick what to and asking help on developer forums. I don't find joy in the company's situation, rather I find the state of things sad. This is the pay a lacking foresight and accountability will bring to companies. Musk's of the world will of course be safe because they are too rich to ever be poor, but many companies will crash unto their own impossibility. Where will the industry and it's professionals be then?
Don't worry guys, I'm already rewriting a broken API written by someone with AI. Sharpen you knifes. Cheers!
😂
X didn't put a single new feature. jobs things were already in testing phase before elon took over. grok is a completely separate company with lot of engineers.
I think there is some sort of disconnect between the management and boots on the ground. I think the layoffs may also be caused by this. There is a promise of the AI solving all problems, and replacing "moody" engineers, so I think they are sold on that, and layoff people with the hope they will get there when needed. I am not sure...
Lots of misinformation about X. The job feature was already in alpha before Elon took over.
I love your channel, but this was a profoundly bad take.
VW uses salesforce to send newsletters, its expensive though 😅
Salesforce is a CRM tool
Elon is responsible for this trend. Should have stayed in South Africa.
AI
Nah, AI is not there yet for this level of worker replacement
@PJ-hi1gz shiiiiiiii
Very well said. Not to mention that one underperformer drags down the entire team substantially.
