My goodness! Lol~~ amazing explanation. That is exactly how it works -- it is not a selection criteria, it is a rejection criteria which rejects talent and selects sub-standards. The audio was becoming intense and more factual as you were progressing towards the end :-). Truthful and informative. thank you.
This. This is what i've been looking for. I've only been working in a entry-level APS for a couple of months but i have been getting a clear vibe that how they assess APS jobs seems to be very different from private sector jobs. I've been getting the sense that it's like a badly oiled machine, but a machine none-the-less, or maybe a poorly coded program, where if you find the algorithm... Thanks a lot for this.
Spot on, this could not have been any more honest. As for the person claiming sour grapes, I'd suggest you're one of the walking dead Archie refers to, riding the gravy train and trying to pretend you're the hard worker, that, or you just haven't been around long enough to see the wood for the trees.
Actually, extremely insightful, and obviously based on practical experience - the selection criteria are often so absurd and extreme, the qualities of global corporate executives & CEO's often do not include these desired traits & skill sets. The bureaucracy is an appalling experience!
The best and most helpful explanations and suggestions can be gotten from Lloyd White's book (Australian) on Job Applications. SC + Cover letter (where you SUMMARISE your case) is the best method, as it is a fair test of who the best applicant is. Also have an additional example ready for the interview, because YOU WILL BE ASKED. This man is a bit bitter and twisted. It might be a bit funny like hearing about how a quadriplegic got his wheelchair, but this is unlikely to help you get a job. Get your paperwork together, write your application as per Lloyd White's book, and you'll at least get to the interview. In a (single position) nursing job in Perth this week, the junior was asked to go through all the 120 applications and bin the ones without SC and/or Cover letter. He binned over 50, and he was upset for the applicants that they appeared not to know about this method that has been in place for professional and govt positions for over 20 years.
ahhhh lol i know exactly what hes talking about, i was a government employee as a contractor for 4.5years and i want back in because of the lack of pressure the good pay and life work balance is great.
Hi, great video - very true! Could you post one about the actual job interview itself? I found the reiteration of key words really helpful and I would like to know from someone that actually has sat on a selection panel, what the best approach is and how you are being assessed? Maybe an example of a good response vs. bad response in an interview would be great too! :) Thank you :)
Selection criteria is the most outdated, stupid way of fielding candidates I've ever come across - the only people who get interviews are the people who know how to put this rubbish together - usually government or ex-government employees - it's all about jobs for the boys!
There is also the aspects of interviewers acting in positions to interview because the actual manager does not want to do the interview. Then there is the fact that a candidate may have extensive experience, but the interviewers are looking for a square peg from another square peg agency , so the standard processes are followed. Let’s face it there is lots of talk about up skilling and innovation, but the reality is not there. Ive spoken to the point of contact who said oh we are looking for a customer service focussed person, but when the interview was undertaken, the focus of the questions was more about team management , lets not forget the security clearances and how that equates to time starting as well, I know one person who was interviewed and then it took 2 years for the clearance. Let’s face it, its about whats easy and makes the next level look good.
bahaha - I am applying for jobs in WA - I had a govt job in Health but resigned when having kids, now I am trying to get back into it, finding it so hard. Selection criteria is horrible. Also, in education here, they already have a relief person they want but "have to advertise", so apply for the job but relief will get it anyway. So yep, find out if someone is acting in position or they have a relief. I want as they have office job in the suburbs rather than the CBD but seems impossible.

This has to be the best selection criteria for a government job video on all of youtube.
Loved it! Hilariously told yet great tips. Still valid 10 years on 👍
This cracked me up. Thanks for posting. I'll definitely take this advice.

Addressing the selection criteria definitely drives the most talented away. Basically this is judging who lies better.

I wouldn't say that the quality of the leadership in the QLD Public Service is bad, there just isn't any.
Magnificent rendition. Two thumbs up.
