Well in reality Indians don't know English adroitly considering the fact that it is a foreign language. They used to understand British colonizers only on a surface level which helped basic communication only. But the deep planning of Brits were out of Indians understanding because lot of times Brits used some heavy idioms or some top notch vocabularies which Indians never even heard of. Hence, British empire could successfully colonize India because lot of their own conversations involved alien type English which were out of Indian's reach.
