Note: Apparently the framerate is a little low on the upload. Not sure what caused that, but seems to be a one-off issue. Sorry about that. You can send your notes to Adobe and UA-cam. Here's the question for everyone: If you could only watch two of these three videos, which would you pick? (A) New case video, (B) X399 board, (C) X299 board?
This video serves two purposes -- sort of three: (1) A behind-the-scenes look at how we handle convention videos, (2) a look at X299 view performance being down (spoke with other reporters in the editorial/written world and found that they saw similar, and we also saw this trend in our article traffic), and (3) a recap of all our X399/X299 board coverage. Keep in mind that this is not just about X299 vs. X399 popularity; it is about X299 popularity being down even compared to other content types. And, of course, our reviews will forge ahead as usual for these new platforms. Computex viewership doesn't impact that. Just thought it'd be interesting to share.
Wanted to ask, was that soldering CPU thing such a big deal?
I actually get why thermal paste would be better as metals do expand under heat.
this actually been a issue for a lot of youtube videos of late on mobile from what i can notice. the algorithm for it is all fucked, its mostly only happens during the early time of uploads. i think its something to do with either their compression system, but my knowledge is out dated. like you said though, i agree its an upload issue.
AMD go forward and intel goes backward in hardware on the info we got now .
cutting pcie lanes , slower cpu speeds ,price drops but at same time make layout on the cache changed that it looks like cut down cpu's .
no idea what the cpu and X299 will perform in real time and the idea of more is better makes AMD look much better at lower prices . thats how it looks for gamers ,enthousiasts and workstation users.
there was nothing amazing to show on the release of X299 so it makes X299 not interesting atleast untill will see testers and benchmarkers showing theyre numbers .
Solitude due to better thermal conditions for solder vs thermal paste, most of the time what intel uses is very inadaquete thermal paste,it would be worse for shelf life then actualy sautering it in some cases. thats my understanding of the theory though, but i am no engineer.
One issue with Computex coverage from most YTers was how they handled case coverages, they bombarded us with huge supetowers or expensive midtowers. One video I watched had them cover some boring tempered glass (so 2016) and then they just skipped over ALL the smaller size cases specially SFF ones, I get SFF is a niche but mATX arent and I dont recall many
I like how transparent you guys are, talking about behind the scene stuff and even going as far as to describe why you uploaded what you did.
Noice!
Keep it up guys :)
Intel got caught with their pants down. I still don't understand how a company like Intel didn't know what's AMD going to pull out (it seems they were overconfident), this is going to cost them...
lemmy022 in my opinion intels stupidity is rooted in their total dominance of he CPU market for years, and now Ryzen is taking much of intels market share and intel has no experience responding to such even competition.
Maybe it's not the product, but pricing. Maybe Intel didn't think, AMD can sell Ryzen's so cheap.
Tyler Coward It’s not yet taking significant market share. It has the potential to. That’s what Intel is worried about.
They are letting amd live, because otherwise intel would become a monopoly and they would be broken up.
I don't' blame intel for being overconfident. Remember Bulldozer and Excavator were both meant to be AMD's comeback but both failed.
I think all the X299 video that was needed was Emo-Linus walking through the rain ;P
I'd watch the X399 and case video. Honestly, I'm bored with Intel and Intel seems to be disinterested as well. They have sat on their laurels for too long and have gotten fat and lazy. I've only used Intel processors for the past dozen or so builds I've put together but I am supremely interested in Threadripper and X399 for the future.
true, its not as if most of us can or need to go X299 or X399 so we rooting for the "underdog" or the fresher product as a whole.
Not true, they were constantly developing, while AMD's only activity for 6 years was to trash-talk their competitors.
Yeah, they were developing. However they were keeping that development to themselves. Just look at the shit-storm that is hitting the industry since AMD has come back. Intel, from everything I've seen, has pushed the launch of X299 ahead 3 months or more. And they are so spooked by Threadripper, that they announced 4 CPUs that are so far from being developed that they don't actually know anything other than the names.
X299 is a a complete wazzu- just gimping the pcie lanes alone makes me jump ship(I'm sure all the other enthusiasts agree)
I'll wait to see performance numbers but yah it's a blatant cash grab and a real piss off.
Completely agree, it's a reason for me to pass on the platform entirely. Intel have lost a customer in me with this move.
I agree with you. The 7900X has 28 PCIe lanes, on an 8-core CPU? WTF?!
My i7 990x has 36 pcie lanes and it's like 5 generations old
PC Gamer still running an i7 980x from 7 years ago. As soon as star citizen hits in 2 years I'll grab what ever is the best.
AMD is back and people want to see them do well. Plus they are charging what seems like reasonable prices for their consumer products. I happily jumped ship to AMD when Ryzen 7 came out. I wanted those 16 Threads for video rendering and I did not want to go with Intel and their ridiculous pricing.
As much as the tech press has driven home that intel still has the fastest gaming CPUs, cost is a huge factor for a lot of people. And most people watching your videos and other tech press videos, I would assume, probably knew that Ryzen would need a while to be optimized. So yeah, Intel is scrambling right now to figure out how to squeeze in new products to compete without affecting their existing lineup which honestly seems impossible if they don't just cut prices.
I'll also be ready to jump ship when VEGA comes out because Nvidia has been doing the same thing to a lesser degree. But Nvidia has massive wiggle room and are seeking different sources of income so they will be fine I'm sure. Intel will be too, they will just be less profitable.
EDIT: I actually made it a point to not watch any X299 videos. They just weren't interesting to me. I am super interested in what AMD is doing. Intel is just taking advantage of people as best they can and that's not cool. I know they are both companies but one seems like they want to deliver great products and move things forward for consumers and the other seems like they just want to be more and more profitable and are trying to figure out how to make that happen.
AMD (and the former ATI) R&D is one reason why I've always preferred their products. Their push for implementing new technologies (sometimes, at the cost of bad press) is _generally_ what in the end drives tech forward and becomes widely adopted: x86_64, GDDR5, HBM(2), Infinity Fabric seems like a home run for scalability. From my perspective: Intel improves/refines existing tech to make it the best it can be, while AMD develops new tech to push everyone forward.
Edit: that's not to say that Intel doesn't push things forward, too. They still make great products and the R&D they put toward lithography and such is nothing to sneeze at. It just doesn't _seem_ as interesting as fresh ideas from AMD.
I agree. I should have also said I don't think Intel or Nvidia make bad products. I feel like they have blurred the perception of great price to performance ratios since AMD has been sitting out the high end for so long.
I don't know why but that zoom in on 'Extreme Megatasking' at 8:14 made me burst out laughing haha. To ba fair though, it's such a stupid term.
Venomy
Just my perspective, Linus Tech Tips did a VLOG that took a big deuce on X299 platfrom that made me take notice of the potential inadequacies of the platform. Jayz2cents also made some criticisms, and this is been the growing trend among a lot of people looking at the platform. Their criticisms resonated with me. At this point, I don't care at all about the details X299, and I'll only pay attention to it again when it's compared in a price / performance chart with AMD and threadripper. Until then, it's all noise. Just one person's view, I guess.
When theres rumors that the 16 core Threadripper chip will start at $850, its hard to look at Intel that maxes at 12 cores this year and it will still cost more. Even the 16 core Intel chip will come out next year and cost twice as much.
Intel is boring, we didn't realized this before because they were the only ones that offered high performance CPUs. AMD has come from the dead with 10 times less resources, absolutely unexpected with brilliant engineering and an exciting portfolio. On the top of that AMD free us from the notion that having 6 or 8 cores with multi-threading should be only for very deep pockets and professionals. I believe the prices play a big role in looking at Intel as this greedy non-creative multinational with no face that has been milking us caring so little to the point to ship their new gaming flagship Kaby Lake i7-7700K with tooth paste inside, they were certain we were gonna buy it anyways ^^
It seems to me that X299 was covered more by many channels, where I noticed fewer X399 videos all around. That said, if given the choice of two videos out of a case, X299, and X399, I would watch the case video and X399.
And of course, VERY excited and interested to see these two compared.
Intel is in a bad spot right now, the whole handling of x299/Skylake-X/Kaby Lake-X has been a disaster and I think people are just tired of Intel not innovating enough, I say that as 6900k owner.
I am simply much more interested in AMDs soaring new products than in Intels minor upgrades from their older products - that's basically it 😎
now hope that AMD can push toward 7nm (both GPU en CPU side)
Chris they should leapfrog the next Ryzen and Radeon products, they should bring 7nm next year! the competition won't be ready for that.
Intel and AMD and im confident nvidia also have published roadmaps with 7nm coming late 2018-2019
TSMC's "7nm" is what, 14nm BEOL? Aka shit. IBM/GloFo 7nm is a whole different beast.
10nm is much more likely and still quite a few years off
for Intel. GloFo is going 7nm EUV Q1 2019.
Interesting take. I think you nailed part of it, which is we knew what Intel was going to do, having slides with skus and prices, and it was predictable. I was strongly considering a 7820x system, though there was a lot of coverage by various tech tubers about PCIE lanes. Thinking about the price of the mobo and processor together, I thought I need to have this work for 5+ years. To get over 40 PCIE lanes, I'd need to spend $1500+ for just the mobo and CPU.
When AMD announced Threadripper, and it's 64 pcie lanes for every board, I saw more continuity because they'd all support the same ram types ect. It was also evident that Intel was now reacting to AMD, and not in a way that projected confidence in their own decisions. AMD has been engineering, and Intel has been marketing, just like during the Athlon64 days. It behooves me to wait to see what skus and prices AMD will formally announce. I know the boards will be expensive, again but I'm thinking longer term usage of 5+ years to replace my 2600k rig. I'm loving the features by board partners of the x299 boards, I'm just assuming they'll be offering similar product lines for x399 and ultimately I won't need to pay $1500 for the CPU and mobo to suit my future needs, unlike Intel. My interest gravitated almost exclusively to the Threadripper platform after the formal announcement.
Plus, AMD is the underdog, and I feel they've worked hard for my money, while Intel walked into this battle taking consumers for granted. I may be buying my first AMD cpu since the Phenom II. Wouldn't have though of this a year ago. AMD is exciting, Intel needs to fight harder and take Linus' advice; to make the best product they can for the least amount of money.
its all about X399 because the intel boards seems half baked.. and hodge podgey.. While AMD is bringing it to the table in an old school way. AMD may not win the IPC battle, No one really cares (except trolls). 2% loss in IPC @ Half the $$$ is worth it for most people. With AMD I might be able to afford an 6+ core chip..... enough said.
preach
William Hatfield IPC matters for gaming.
Who said it didn't? At the end of the day what is 5 or 10 frames worth? double the price? No. We are talking about productivity CPUs anyway
stop this gaming meme shit plz
No point in bringing that up when we are talking about +10 core cpus
These chips aren't aimed at gaming at all, the only reason to get one for gaming is if you want the additional PCIe lanes for X-fire or SLI
I've been watching a lot of amd coverage because that's what I'm upgrading my 3770k to. I have owned amd in the past and had 0 issues with it. Getting an 8/16 thread 1700 makes way more sense to me than upgrading to a 7700k with the same amount of threads as I have now. Intel has been stuck on 8 threads for like 6 years and amd is giving me the upgrade path I've been looking for for a long time.
What he wants to say: 399 > 299. Amd marketing dep. smiling somewhere
No. Absolutely not, seeing as we haven't reviewed or benchmarked either. We're saying what was said in a 16 minute long video -- that X299 coverage is low popularity compared to our other show coverage.
Gamers Nexus I meant in terms of just numbers. Just marketing wise, amd wanted to be bigger, better, and chose x399. And looking at your view data, they made a marketing success
I agree with that in part, yes. X399 will sound "newer" to people who aren't following this stuff daily (like a lot of you are), so they'll start looking there. 399 is a larger number than 299, so will be perceived as better/newer to folks not in the know. It's an interesting move. It also has potential to confuse a lot of people, of course, which isn't great.
For me this is nothing new. Look at i3,i5,i7 -> R3,R5,R7 :)
Amd even adopted NVIDIA branding: GTX 980, 1080 -> RX480, 580
Thanks so much for replying on my comment. I love you guys :)
I'm amazed how lame AMD's naming -eh- copying was as they could've made actually informative names for their products but decided to copy Intel. Like was said in pcper podcast with Coffee Lake there's probably both AMD and Intel B350 and also AMD X370 and Intel Z370.. Why not R8 for 8 cores and AM4-X for X-series chipset or something. Not to say the Intel marketing material is any better but when you have a blank canvas to start with I'd expect better.
That is because PEOPLE ARE SICK AND TIRED OF INTEL
đenan Hajrovic So true
true story
Speak for yourself... I've actually enjoyed 10+ years of ultra-stable performance from C2D's onwards. Yes, they're overpriced, but only if you ignore the fact that AMD are their only competitor, and let's face it, it's taken AMD this long to catch up, and for good reason.
Sure - also running i7 for years now - no change but only because intel is not putting out performance upgrades anymore. Changed now. Thanks to AMD.
Anthony Rodemus a lot of ceo changes money loss people leaving thats why not because amd made a inferior product(amds cpus actually are made better they disappate the heat better do they scale well no thats not build quality tho)
what really pissed me off about Intel more than this lineup was the fact that they will not be soldered. and thank you for the video with Der8auer detailing that, but on a high end platform like x299 and asking the prices they are asking for a cpu that is just using thermal compound is bs.
I will watch any video as long as steve is in it.
Haim Bilia (•ؔʶ̷ ˡ̲̮ ؔʶ̷)✧
Haim Bilia ANY?
Dittoed, Steve you're one of my fave reviewer so defiant!
Haim Bilia I'd watch a shampoo commercial if Steve was on it
Ya I love any video with Jesus in it as well
And yet all the mobo makers have made a ton of boards for X299 already, yet board options for Ryzen are still seriously lacking (mATX/ITX)
AMD is the underdog right now. Everyone's looking for a shift in power because that results in lower prices and better performance. I prioritized watching X399 videos over 299 because I'm more interested in seeing AMD win back some of the market than I am about Intel's new platform's minor performance gains and inflated price tags.
There were X299 titles everywhere on youtube - took me 3 or 4 day before I eventually clicked on one :P
Paul's hardware had tile "X299 is here!", I'm like "who cares?" After Skylake nothing better has come out of that greedy corp + AMD much cheaper ofc..
I clicked on Linus and JayTwoCents videos bashing X299 xD
Crimson Koba They didn’t bash Intel. They just gave their opinions on the matter.
Scott G. In which they bashed Intel. Opinions can be good or bad, and those were terrible against Intel tactics
Their opinions were understandably negative. It's such a lazy fake refresh on Intel's side.
MarginalSC They basically rebranded all the Xeons E3/E5 2xxx v4, made them overclockable and crippled their RAID perfomance
Intel spec/performance improvements have been very small and in some cases such as Kaby Lake X vs. Kaby Lake are nearly negligible. A 5% performance gain doesn't really inspire excitement. AMD's performance gains this generation have been huge. So, as an Intel user, I'm more interested in AMD is doing because it's actually shaking up the market.
AMD's new products are defying expectations and really raising the bar for the kind of generation-to-generation improvement we can see -- something Intel seems to have forgotten about. Props to Team Red, this year. You have my attention again.
The views are down for x299 because nobody wants to buy overpriced garbage. The value proposition from AMD (mostly the same performance and better features for drastically less money) is just too great.
I would prefer to see coverage of Threadripper X399
Also, consider that new Threadripper motherboards might also come with 16 memory slots, taking full advantage of quad channel...whch is only available on the expensive i9 cpus.
The i9 and X299 is clearly a case of Intel doing something they shouldn't just because they can get away with it...or thought they could. They most likely weren't expecting AMD to beat them at their own game.
Very interesting info! I've heard enough X299 and have lost interest and faith in it with the deal breaker being pcie lanes...or lack thereof. Currently on X99 but will most likely jump straight to X399. My last AMD was Athlon XP!
I am bored about INTEL man , i know how they will perform before benchmarks are even out , plus they use some anti consumer stuff , and i won't even mention pricing.
This man could not be more transparent if he was literally made of glass. Most honest content creator on youtube
Not bad, another negative press after linus and Jay2cent, look like Intel is going downhill.
Once again, thanks AMD, you stop a quad core wall that lasted for 11 years.
what? 8 cores have been out from amd for a long... long time bud.
"The chair arms have four directional movement for configuration to your liking and, as a bonus, they use roller blade wheels." That sentence always makes me smile. :-)
Gotta say, AMD has figured out a way to turn a massive profit by just slapping two CPU's together on a chip. Intel might be looking to do the same thing some time, because their prices won't compete well if they are just going for bigger and bigger die sizes. I mean really all AMD did was take it's good 4 cores and stitch them together, then took two of those and put them on the same chip. to be honest it's brilliant, and i applaud this kind of intuitive thinking.
Naouta actually they bin all 8 cores defective 8 cores become Ryzen 5 and they slap two together to make threadripper. they are also reporting 80% yields.
Maegus2 pretty sure those are quad core complexes put together with the infinite fabric. But I'll got look at the info again to make sure.
Maegus2 yeah this Reddit post has a solid grasp on the subject: www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/5ybrxn/ryzen_7_is_actually_behaving_like_a_dual_4c8t/
I'm gonna dig more to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Maegus2 alright after heading back and looking over AMD's slides describing how Zen works, it seems to hold well enough that amd is just putting 2 CCX'S together. So that would mean that the size of die they have to cut is only a 4 core. So waffer yield with reasonable levels of defective chips, would lead them to still produce 8 core chips by just putting two good quad cores together. And since Threadripper is just two 1700 cores with full working PCIE lanes on the same chip. it makes sense that the cost of it isn't vary high. Unlike Intel who goes for much larger die size. when Intel makes a 8 core chip, it's all on the same die, witch is double the size of a quad core (Or roughly that size). Witch means they only get half the yield per waffer they could get if they did it the same way amd is doing it. Not saying they need to, but the cost of production must be better on amd right now to offer such good performance at such a lower price. I mean the 18 core from Intel is gonna be 2000usd (rumored I belive) while amd is said to be doing a 16 core for 850usd?!? There is no room for me to say that it isn't clear, AMD has figured out a way to slap quads together and turn a great profit.
Is that why you didn't put "intel" into the title of this video to confuse AMD viewers into possibly watching it? ^^
Ha!
You cheeky genius :D
I expect X299 to be 2x the price of X399, therefore I am less interested... (I may be alone in this but I expect other agree)
Videos like this are really cool. I work an IT 9-5 and always wondered about what it's like behind the scenes doing UA-cam.
x299 is just to confusing for one, it's to many variables going on with the cpu lane differences and the memory configurations on top of that those chips are way too expensive I can get an 8 core ryzen and the motherboard on amazon right now for $370 US so anything intel is offering that is not A 4 core 8 thread cpu is non existent to me and most people I talk to finally the game has been shaken up
The insane level of variables is worse than trying to manually configure DMA.
Nice carefully chosen arrangement of words in the video title. "Remarkably Poor Performance of X299". Oh, "Coverage"
People advocating for Intel to cut prices don't seem to understand marketing very well. Intel is commonly regarded as the "superior" tech company with "quality" products. Especially the name "core i7" is still strong, even though it got damaged a little in the recent past.
If Intel would simply lower the prices on their core series products that would do two things.
1.) Make it clear to absolutely every attentive consumer, not just those who are following the tech press, that Intel has been massively milking the market since sandy bridge.
2.) Lower the value of the "Intel" brand, aswell as the value of the "core i" brand.
And for what? To undercut a competitor in a market where they already have 75% of the market share?
So let's look at the likely consequences of a move like selling i5's for 100 € (cutting prices in half):
- Damaging their strongest consumer brand
- Damaging the main brand
- Lowering profit margins
And for what? To get a couple of % in marketshare in a market they - as stated before - they already dominate, and on top of that a shrinking market?
By doubling down on the I7's and I9's with their new X299 platform they essentially said: "Fuck you plebs, we don't give a shite if you buy ryzen CPU's".
And btw. the i9 was basically created as a new brand *because* "i7" doesn't mean that much anymore in terms of brand value.
They could now make the move of slightly lowering the prices of their chips, while introducing a new tier (i9) to the mainstream desktop.
Sell Pentiums for 40, I3's for 80, i5's for 150, quad core i7's for 250 and low end consumer i9's for 350.
Bring along 6 cores, superior IPC, superior clock speeds and better SMT and they're done.
Question is if they care enough about the desktop market to make such a move / if it's profitable for I don't know Intel's business metrics and strategy in detail.
Sorry my bad, Intel doesn't own 75% of the marketshare.
It's closer to 80%:
www.cpubenchmark.net/market_share.html
Marcel Krebs yes because intel seems to have their shit together when a fucking i5 is on the extreme platform
I wonder how you can possible misinterpret my comment as shiling / fanboying for Intel. smh
Really interesting how you work out what videos to release. Thanks for the transparency!
lemme tell a joke
extreme mega tasking
quad core
i9
the thing is, there was a million x299 videos everyday, it's kind of hard to watch a motherboard video (unless you're planning on buying that exact model) without getting super bored
Yet this vid is sitting at 60,797 views. The irony!
Glad to see you back at the table lol. The vlog was very nice for a change.
This is a late view and late comment so it'll probably not get read by anyone but you asked for our opinion so here it is:
TL;DR: Intel is irrelevant. AMD is the current market leader.
I think the poor performance of Intel coverage is directly connected to how well people expect the platform to perform. They look at Intels current line up and see that the only two chips that truly matter in the marketplace at the moment is the G4560 and i7 7700K. And both only have a tentative hold in the market because AMD haven't yet released anything new to compete with G4560, and i7 7700K only leads because of it's K suffix. Take away overclocking and the 7700K isn't leading performance in anything. Not even gaming. And even with overclocking, the number of games it still commends a performance lead in diminish by every single new bios update and game update for the Ryzen series.
Then they look at the X299 and ask themselves what and who the hell is this for? KBL-X is supposed to be for gamers, right? However, 16 PCIe lanes means you can't run a graphics card at full performance on it as there's simply not enough PCIe lanes for having a full width x16 card and run _anything else_ like an NVMe SSD. The platform itself takes 4 of those PCIe lanes so there's a maximum of 12 leftover for the PCIe slots, if that as it's likely that the onboard NVMe will also occupy at least 4 lanes. So the platform is crippled from the start and irrelevant for gamers.
Then it must be for professional users, right? Well, no, there's still the PCIe lane issue and the fact that simply due to core count AMD will have the performance lead because people in this market segment generally do not overclock their CPUs. But wait, didn't Intel have the core count lead? No, no one seriously believes that. The announced 18 core variant is not coming out any time soon, if indeed at all, no one has seen working silicon yet. So maybe they will come out eventually, no one knows.
And who cares because they can look at the AMD Epyc line and see they have a 32 core variant that is essentially 4 R7s connected with the infinity fabric, and that socket is virtually identical to the Threadripper socket so there's no reason to think that AMD can't just release a 24 or 32 core variant of the Threadripper at any time they like.
So to sum up this long post that no one will read. AMD has Intel by the balls. It has the overall performance lead in every single market segment except in a few very specialist cases that comes at an extortionate price premium, and it has the price to performance lead in every single market segment except the extreme low end entry level where Intel is still competitive though not by much as people tend to forget that there's still the FX chips out there that actually does performs quite well stacked against the G4560.
Don't we all love a good story of an underdog rising to the challenge more than a documentary about a dictatorship screwing stuff up.
x399 > x299 > case (reason being is most main stream case manufactures are not what I use these days)
I really like the format of GN's content, as a viewer I feel involved and whoever disliked this video struggles with information and/or lack of attention span and should watch another video instead of disliking it.
It just feels like everyone is flooding UA-cam videos from Computex. I think it's just because there's so many X299 videos on UA-cam in general, not your videos in particular. I know I'm tired of hearing about it. There's really only so much you can say about a chipset, so each manufacturer's take isn't that interesting from another's, and with dozens of UA-camrs making a video about each vendor's motherboards, there's easily hundreds of videos about X299. All I care about the general features, not what every single company is doing with every single one of their motherboards since there aren't that many models that stand out from another. Plus, we've been hearing about X299 for a lot longer than X399 anyhow. Threadripper pretty much came out of nowhere, while Skylake-X has been expected for over a year now and details have been trickling out for months.
To answer the question: I am currently evaluating the market in preparation for a a full rebuild with high-end hardware around the end of fall to the beginning of winter. I would watch all of those videos normally, but if I had to pick two, I would pick B and C regarding the new platforms. The reason for this is the fact that I haven't decided which platform and brand I will use, among other considerations, for my build.
EDIT: I'm not going to use either of those, but I still want to keep an eye on development, future upgrade paths, etc.
1) Intel HEDT need DLC package to get RAID going
2) Intel Kaby Lake X was design to milk the hell out of us with $339 price but all neutered specs
3) Intel uses pigeon poop for their premium lineup that kills Overclocking and devoid warranty to those who delid so they earn more sales
4) Intel only have 44 PCIe lane compared to AMD which comes with 64 lanes at half the price
5) Intel neutered PCIe to those CPU under $999 while AMD have all CPU PCIe unlocked.
6) Intel Skylake X have lower IPC than Ryzen.
Why are we still interested Intel for their overpriced junk?
do we know for sure that all 64 lanes are unlocked on all AMD x399 cpus?,how do you know about the skylake IPC?
I think so many people realise that Intel are jumping the shark with the whole i9/X299 that its almost like they just want to sit back and watch the horror unfold... Just look at the viewing figures of Linus' X299 video
My friend who is new to computers thought that b250 was an older amd chipset so I guess it works
A friend of mine was building a system this year, we waited and waited for Ryzen to come and boy there was never a doubt that this is what he should get. Eventually he got a 1600 with an RX580 and we built the machine last week in the S340 elite. Came out beautiful, runs quiet and costs less than a 4 core Intel system. Win, win, win.
This is why Intel is loosing views, stocks are going down and they are confused as to what to do with even more hits coming from AMD with Threadripper.
Who cares about that platform anyway, it's already dead to me.
1) Case
2)X399 Threadripper
Note that I am currently running an AMD 1090t with R9 280X, but I just ordered a 7700k yesterday afternoon. Starting a new build, but won't be updating my graphics until after Vega hits.
it's IN and NORMAL to hate Intel these days no matter what they do (not a fanboy! I just noticed that trend going on for at least 2-3 months) and it's OUT and INTEL-FANBOYISM if you say anything critical of AMD. 99% of people pushing this trend honestly have no idea what they are talking about most of the time and are just fishing for clicks, likes and views. Even some big UA-camrs are doing this (trying to stay relevant). Criticizing or praising a product you haven't even tested yet is idiotic at best. That's why I like this channel. No drama. Just facts.
Exactly my thoughts. Waiting for the reviews and proper comparisons is the sensible thing to do at this point. And GN does the best on that front with minimal fluff like constant builds and opinion pieces.
andytube30 tbh, GN is the only source of tech info I'm following. I just want facts. Not rumors or sensational clickbait headlines.
isn't it way to obvious why people criticize intel?
havent seen a full video in a while but this one was worth it...loved all the info espically how you guys release videos
Thanks! Glad to hear that's interesting.
Now why would you think that X299 would be better if it's not even trying to compete with Threadripper and it's more expensive, but I think Threadripper mobos will be pretty expensive.
Brozeph Stalin I think threadripper boards should be pretty cheap, because Zen is almost a SoC architecture.
What do you mean by 'almost an SoC architecture'
Mobos are not the problem. Top end mobos are going to be expensive in both platforms, but for the same price in amd you have more features. And the money saved in the Cpu can be put towards a GPU
Brozeph Stalin AMD is always cheap, stop talking with your ass,you could probably buy 2 threadripper boards for the price of 1 x299
saladwithsalad true, but no one asked you to talk like an ass.
Thanks for the behind the scenes information, really interesting stuff!
Video/sound lag anyone?Sync issues?
No, try to reload the page
Try ctrl+F5. It is fine. YT sometimes screws things up though, or you might just be matching the voice-over parts to the wrong lip movement, seeing as several of these clips were shot at Computex. Anything in front of the wood wall is in sync. FPS seems a little low on the upload, though.
yeah im getting that too
Did a F5 and watched an older video and compared and it seems that the start of this video is choppy.
Looking at the comments below, I am not the only one.
Keep up the good work as always.
Stop complaining guys, its cinematic af lol
I want my motherboard to have a built in "clapper." Clap your hands near the I/0 panel once loudly to update the BIOS. Clap twice to change the color of the RGB setup. Clap 3 times to speed up the fans. etc. Allow for the clapper microphone to be set up externally at a different location.
Speaking for myself, I'm more apt to watch videos on AMD's new stuff because they're kinda like a new kid on the block. I know they've been around forever but its been a very long time since they've had anything compelling. I'm tired of Intel's predictable performance gains over a set period of time, which speaking of that they gain even less between skus now than they did in the past. No more real Tick Tock like before. AMD is blowing up the CPU/Chipset/Motherboard scene with new, less expensive, and compelling products. I'm tired of Intel's shenanigans, and I'm happy... no delighted to see AMD giving them some real competition.
Have not been a particular fan of your videos in the past. However this is a really interesting look at the backside of YT producers, very interesting stats etc.
As to the x299/x399 viewing figures, maybe its more to do with something (x399) being completely new, not a rehash of older equipment. AMD does seem to have shaken up the marketplace a bit, as we all hoped that they would. The Proof of the pudding will be this time next year when (maybe) Intel may be able to do another end run (a la Conroe et al). Or AMD with the Zen 2 etc.... Very interesting times to be an enthusiast once again !
I think the X299 boards look better. I wished the Manufactures showed more love for AMD boards.
Ahn Henri x399
Ahn Henri people who go to these boards care about functionality not athtatics most of the time.
X399 boards are engineering samples with several parts and especially heat sinks sourced from other motherboards. That's why they don't look "pretty" yet. Retail versions will come with all the RGB goodness and flashy heat sink designs like you're used to.
It's very interesting to watch this video in retrospect. People were tired of Intel products back then and were holding off looking at/buying Intel products bc they were waiting for AMD products.
I know I was. I waited until last week when I put together my first Ryzen system. More to come.
I'll tell you this bottom line, Intel is the Establishment and AMD is the Rebellion! That's why
the lack of views.
On top of the line Nvidia hardware you can't SEE the frame rate difference in games between the two systems, but your wallet see's the difference.
I bought two ASUS Crosshair Hero VI MB and two R5 1600X to get that 4.1 XFR out of the box. Couldn't be happier, bios update one week later, I had 3200Mhz on my ram.
One system is my media center and is tasked with multiple stream video encoding and compression daily. I am now using my game machine with two R9 380's for Ethereum mining. With Bitcoin at over $2,400 a coin, even Bloomberg Media took notice and had some people on talking about it. So I had to try it and so far I see what all the hype is about!
I hope to use the X399 for Quad GPU(dual gpu x 4?) mining with Vega. The software I use does GPU and CPU mining! So I have reasoned, all those cores and threads will pay for itself in 3mos or less? After that I will be buying all the AMD Stock I can afford.
Maybe you should do a closer review on the GPU market revival for AMD because of crypto mining? Didn't Asrock have a board at Computex? This plus the trending market rejection of Intel is a very current topic for News coverage IMO.
Great work as always! I really respect your well thought out positions. I may not always agree but, damn hard to prove you wrong :).
I'll check again next week, but if a video saying that no one watches X299 content gets more views than the actual X299 content, I'll have a good laugh.
in the words of the Great Agent J"
"Old and busted, New Hotness..."
I pretty much watch everything published on this channel, but I do like things like behind-the-scenes and channel updates because it gives me an idea about the work involved.
As for x299 not doing well? I don't know, but speaking for myself I upgraded from my i5 2500K to an i5 6600K when Skylake came out. With that I got features like m2 NVMe support, USB3.1 gen2 and DDR4 ram. I'm just not sure what x299 could offer me that Ryzen would be lacking, and I'm fairly sure that any intel offering would simply be more expensive.
PC cases are interesting because I find very few do reviews on cases any more.
And...what's up with the choppy framerate?
You guys talk a lot about frametimes and now you're having bad frametime issues :,)
This video was brought to you by Intel.
One video out of how many? Cut them some slack :)
Yeah, I know...but we gotta make some comedy out of it!
The potential that high performance CPUs might actually be within my price bracket has me interested in X399, but I couldn't really care less about 299. Hopefully I'll get the next gen equivalent
Steve/Gamers Nexus does not get it, most of us will not be buying HEDT be it from Intel or AMD, we're watching Computex purely as a form of entertainment, and what's more entertaining than a story abot an underdog who's been written off for 10 years and finally making a comeback, people love a good underdog story that's all it is. No one doubts that SkyLake X will outperform TR, we already know from mainstream lineup that Skylake X has both an IPC as well as a frequency advantage, ignoring the fact that THREADRIPPER is made up of 2 zipplein dies connected via IF...
I feel that Steve takes these topics too seriously, gaming isn't even a hobby but a timewaster for people with too much idle time.
Taking hardware seriously is sort of what we do. That's what sets us apart. It may not be for you, but that's OK.
Cmdaddy88 think you are wrong people do want the new processors. But I think people are very upset with Intel and have had enough
Cmdaddy88 "Gaming is for people with too much idle time" isn't something you should say while typing 1000 words in a UA-cam comment.
I can second the part about these videos being watched for entertainment. Well, infotainment...ish. And the underdog story. Or simply checking the actual/unpredictable new stuff.
For me TR and in general 10+ cores CPUs are for servers or really specific needs that specific individuals need for their work. And those individuals I think are not many. Haven't actually consulted sales numbers so I can completely be wrong here.
However, gaming is a hobby (don't know why this was mentioned in a TR, X399 and X299 thread though). Just like sports can be hobbies. Wasting time or not, there are many gamers that spend money on hardware and time in being knowledgeable about it. Of course GN is serious about it.
What a painfully ignorant post. Who is "us" and "we"? I do not know you and you don't know me, yet you speak on all my behalf (and are completely wrong). I believe you are the one that does not get it. And that last sentence was so autistic, it was cringe worthy.
x299 is a 5 year old platform essentially. x399 you see that HUGE socket and feel the freshness just flowing of that motherboard. I think people watch cases because they can look really really cool or because they might discover a 60 dollar case with tempered glass that looks really good.
I cant tell, you "defending" the poor excuse of a "new product" called x299 platform?
No? Why does everything have to be a defense or an attack? If you "can't tell," maybe it's because it's not happening. This is just musings and behind-the-scenes to content performance.
If that's the case then I'm sorry. And i guess thank you for taking a great interest in your subs opinions, that works both ways i guess. But you really don't see these "follow up" videos about number of views on specific content that often and in the same video go over product naming and that it just might be a little bit confusing. I think you know why people did not show the same appreciation to the Intel products this time around, coming in to this hindsight. Thank you for responding to the criticism.
so there is some level of irony here when the video about why there are no views on his x299 video has about the same number of views in 1 day that the x299 video has in 3 weeks.
X399 =D
The big interest is the price and performance of all of AMD's new chips and boards. I saved money for a long time, originally with plans of making an intel machine around the 2000$ mark. Now I have TWO R7 1700 computers for 1600$. We are just sick of intel price points and requirement of using liquid cooling, that's it.
I was an intel fan. I had an x99 system. I saw x299 and I just scratched my head. It was a ridiculous amount of money for a new motherboard, and marginal improvements at best. By the time I really needed to build a new system, Ryzen was already far better value. I just moved my money elsewhere.
Cache size is also a very important feature perhaps more so than additional cores, both CPU makers have been very reluctant to move to cache warfare, it's a very easy and quick way to achieve faster CPU's.
There's probably a technical reason they're not moving to cache warfare... yet. I wouldn't be surprised if AMD DOES go there soon, since, if it is a technical reason, AMD's in the best position right now to address it, being the only one of the two with a real engineering base.
great video Steve, always getting into the details and thorough analysis, even with stuff like this.
I think people have seen the prices of the X chips and expect to be priced out of that product stack. I assume most people who want to build a HEDT in the for seeable future will wait for TR on the assumption that it will be a better price to performance proposition. I know in my office we built a R7 render box and my boss is so happy with it he wants to look at the TR stack when it becomes available for an even better render machine as well as a compile system.
A>B>C
In my case , i already have a x370+1700 and I am looking at what is coming in the case market to put my system in. Still waiting on vega, held off buying rx580 for months and now there aren't any in stock anywhere :(.
For the x399 and x299, I am not really interested in either but I am more curious what AMD has to offer since it's the first HEDT platform from them in a long while. Whereas x299 from Intel felt like more of the same.
As a builder, if I had to choose two it would be case and anything AMD. Cases because I have yet to have a customer come to me for a build and say "just put it in whatever". I do high end builds and customers that are willing to pay 8k and up for a machine want it to not only have top level performance but Look good as well. Most customers want something that is going to stand out, look good and perform great. I would watch the AMD videos for a couple of reasons, 1. It is new to market and by seeing what you guys do I can then do my performance testing and hardware pairing comparisons with somewhat of an established metric. 2. I have more and more customers coming to me asking about AMD's new line and how they compare to Intel. And while I have been playing with their on the market stuff I have not been privileged enough to get see or play with the threadripper line so, it allows me to point anyone that is wondering about the upcoming releases in the direction of a trusted reviewer. Granted I do not know any of the reviewers on here but after years of building I am able to listen to the reviews and get a general idea of who is schilling for a company and who is giving honest reviews. The last thing I would say is this. Many of us viewers want to know if AMD's line is going to be competitive and a viable alternative to Intel. Intel has dominated the market and set such a slow pace on upgraded CPU releases that many people like me are hoping that AMD's line is actually as good as advertised. This would hopefully force Intel to set reasonable prices for their higher tier CPU's and give the consumer a little bit of comfort knowing that the CPU they are buying is not something that was obsolete before it even hit market. Intel is famous for releasing chips two and three generations behind what they have in the vault. Look at I9, it has been in the bin for a couple of years now but they held on to it. Now that AMD is making a comeback they are rushing to release it so they don't lose to much money on its development. Hopefully, with AMD making this push, Intel will stop holding back the tech in order to squeeze every penny out of their old outdated chips and give the consumer up to date tech at a reasonable price. Sorry about this being so long, did not mean to turn this into a referendum on Intel and how shady they can be.
I'm a 50 year old male. Two of three videos? X399....then a case video...preferably a mini or micro ATX.
Thank You for the behind the scenes on Your content thought processes. Great video.
I look past x299 videos due to over saturation of those videos. You was also correct with the assumption of same annual performance gains.
answer your question, the way I feel is that as an AMD fan for the last 15 or 20 years we've been out in the cold for so long that we're more passionate now than ever. to see them competing again and the health that competition brings... two years ago everyone was comfortable with four cores today we're seeing 8 and 16 core launches this should have been done 2 or 3 years ago but with no competition Intel could keep the market at 4 cores. saving themselves R&D and charging whatever they wanted as they were the leaders in the market with no competition and could monopolize the CPU Market. AMD shot themselves in the foot with FX which is why so many of us AMD fans are running Intel systems these days, and to be able to build an AMD system again just brings a feeling of joy and thus happy nostalgia of the former Glory Days.
I don't think anything in this video pertained to me, but I couldn't stop watching it. Very interesting! Great work!
After a quick glance at the view numbers for this video vs your most recent ones, this video did very well. Why? Just a guess, but you have an audience which likes to know how things work; we are full of curiosity. If I were the owner of Gamers Nexus, I'd test the hypothesis by producing a small number of videos focused on some very basic aspects of computer technology. It would be a nuts and bolts approach, like how a transistor works and what's inside of one or, maybe something a bit broader like the basics of Bluetooth, receivers and transmitters working best with certain shapes of antennas (please look at an image search for "Bluetooth antenna reference design").
I've likely been officious (thank Douglas Adams for that word) but the video set me to thinking.
I was one of those people that didn't watch much computex coverage besides the delidding because frankly I don't see it done very often. And it's always exciting to see for me personally.
I think it's more interesting to watch an underdog come up, than an industry leader leading.
The fact that Intel had to rush out X299 to compete with Threadripper makes X399 more interesting to watch than X299.
Everyone sitting on x79 is wondering, "well nothing looks good".
To be honest, I thought this was going to be a video about poor performance of X299 as a product, but its my fault for neglecting to read the last word. Still an interesting video!
LOL! I had to make myself slow down to notice that last word myself... And I KNEW this channel would NEVER address the leaks and rumors on just what we both thought at first... This channel only talks about stuff that embargoes have been lifted on. They're a review channel, not a rumormongering one.
also, UA-cam was saturated with x299 coverage from multiple UA-camrs, different coverage is bound to get you more views than videos that contain similar content that 4+ other major tech UA-camrs have already covered.
x299 and x399 feels like 1 step forward and two steps back. I guess i need to see actual benchmarks.
"We even had a vlog do two times more views than some of our X299 videos, and we never do vlogs."
Maybe that means you should do more vlogs ;)
X399 would definitely be my priority. I don't know the specifics about Threadripper yet and have only seen a few early/prototype boards from Asus, Asrock and Gigabyte. Also, that huge socket looks really cool.
I would still be somewhat interested in X299, but due to the price of the CPUs contrasting heavily with the rumoured much cheaper price of Threadripper(which may well be fake) as well as being able to extrapolate performance somewhat accurately from past products, my interest in X299 is pretty low. Also, I feel Intel have been taking the enthusiast market for granted for years due to no competition, I bought Intel because they were the only choice. Now that AMD have interesting revolutionary products which effectively meld quad core CPUs together to create a bigger CPU things are exciting again.
I am not interested in cases because I am not in the market for one.
