I listened to this too around 10 or more years ago, giving me nostalgia... and I finally made my own UA-cam! Didn't expect it to be folk but here I am. H ope you're still rockin Warren!
I’m doing well, thanks for asking! I teach privately via webcam and have created a music theory and ear training video series since this video was made, you can stop by my website if you are interested!
I found it hard to both sing and play but it gets easier after time. Play small sections over and over and link them to new sections that you have also practised with until you can play throughout. Practice, practice and practice!
such a great tutorial...thanks for helping me out..been trying to find a decent tutorial for months and so frustrated that i can't play this song but now, thanks to you, i'm able to play it..thanks a lot...
yeah your chord is spot on. i mention it with a different fingering at 2:11, so we're on the same page. different voicing is all, both are Ab Major chords with a 9th.
@dogback5 warren just says: DU_UD__U_UD - 1+(2)+3(+4)+(5)+6 but i think this is not the full measure, as the end differs if I'm not wrong sometimes he adds _U_U - (7)+(8)+ and sometimes _UDU - (7)+8+ also have a hard time figuring it out, as my talent for rythm is not my best feature, but it's very rewarding when i finally got it.
I actually show both versions, and while you are correct that he is using 46x546, the other shape is very common in other Radiohead songs. It's still the same chord with a slightly different voicing.
whenever I want to figure out how to play a RadioHead song, you're always the best choice Warren. I was just wondering have you covered Exit Music already?
@mobilitywestmidlands It isn't in the C Major scale. Good observation. Most would probably call it a temporary modulation... and I would probably refer to it as an Ab chord, not a G#. Half-steps Ab and Eb and Gb in the Abmaj9 chord make for a wonderful transition back to C and even that one time they go to F in the end, regardless of the key.
@ceridawn Little confused by your comment, but the melodic movement happens on a bunch of the chords the LAST time through the song, not on all of the song.
this is kinda the way i feel about it.. you get to a certain point in playing genrally where you just have to listen and interpret you own style upon it... as far as i can make out its a hammer on off, you can do it o the up or down stroke with your pinky. im sure Thom changes all the time !
Just play an Abmaj bar chord. So bar the 4th fret and instead of putting your ring finger on the 5th string you put it on the 4th string 6th fret. Now put your pinky on the 1st string 6th fret. It is just how he plays it the second time just with your ring finger on the octave instead of the fifth.
@pmac24 I would list the numbers in reverse, but I guess to each his own. And it's an Abadd2, without muting the 6th string (otherwise it wouldn't be an Abadd2, it would then be an Abadd2/Eb) - 4x6546 or 46x546 are both acceptable since Thom uses both.
Is nick still single? Haha now in seriousness, your videos are so good, I’m happy that you still post after all this years, I feel kinda sad when I find an awesome cover or tutorial from years ago and they dissapear from the internet.
@warrenmusic When Thom plays this at latitude 2009 he plays with 4x6546, which in my opinion is the easiest of the two. So you are sot on there warren. Thanks for teaching me this by the way. After watching the video and a lot of practice i can play this beautiful song.
warren, you are amazing. ha! i prefer to not use barre chords when possible (and i can use my thumb on the upper 2 strings), and i was looking for another voicing of the A chord in the verse. sure enough, your video shows up and is absolutely perfect! i feel like i should pay you fro all these lessons, haha! also, it's awesome that you are a redditor. i see you all the time on r/radiohead.
Also, do you know how Thom does the C harmonic on that chord? I think it may be done by lightly touching at the 6th fret on the D string (when you fret the 6th fret on the A string with your 3rd finger and it hangs down to mute it, it would lightly touch it, thus). I think it's there... you'd be more of a guitar theory person than I am. But it's like impossible to do. I can't figure out how he plays the harmonic so loud.
Grazie warren, you have teached me paranoid android and reminded this one plus a lot of songs that now i don't remember... anyway if u come in Italy ( rome area ) I will give u a good beer!
By the way, didn't mention this before (when I was telling off that catseatingclouds kid) but thanks a lot for posting this! I was having trouble getting the chorus right (the E-minor mostly) and this was a tremendous help.
@zaynab100 Cool. I prefer to use 46x546 now just because sometimes I hear Thom sliding that 5th string 6th fret down to the 3rd fret (Cmaj). Same chord either way.
HEy man, Great tutorial, but I dont quite get the rythm. I always get mixed up with the sixteenth notes, and octaves and stuff. Could you please make a video about that? or just wirte the notes on the comments or something? Anyway, most appreciated! Thanks!
Learnt your tutorial love it but i found the 4x6546 chord a bit dif to how thom plays it. I think he plays 46x546 check it out and tell me if im right lol x
Just took a break …about 8 years…kids etc.. and guitar is back! I appreciate your work so much over such a long time Warren - thank you! 🙏

I believe the A-flat chord is x46x546. 3rd finger or the A string instead of the D string. Hard to discern, but I think this might be the case.
Nah, it's cool, I can see how easily it could be misread.
Obviously Warren is a good guitar player, I loved this tutorial.
This is awesome, man!
Thank you for the tutorial, love this song

I just sang this tonight and played better than I ever did in 10 yrs. This time it meant something.. for some reason. RIP X

it changes from F to Em on the "&" of 3 if you count 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
It's 2 1/2 beats of F and 1 1/2 beats of Em
Hey warren u r a great radio head cover
love your lessons! could you possibly do "Fog", cant find a lesson for it anywhere x
Is nick still single? Haha now in seriousness, your videos are so good, I’m happy that you still post after all this years, I feel kinda sad when I find an awesome cover or tutorial from years ago and they dissapear from the internet.
Hahahaha no he’s married
I have a lot more left in me to share
@warrenmusic

@MsCalmbeforethestorm That's what this tutorial is for. Listen for the chord shape, I'll spell it out in detail.
my favourite song, Thanks
Fmaj7. 133210 with thumb on E string.
dude, do you have like EVERY Radiohead song covered? daaang!
Also, do you know how Thom does the C harmonic on that chord? nice tutorial bro, very easy to get in the song !!!!
Great lesson.
@rucine No, I don't use/write tabs, I do everything by ear/what I see them playing on UA-cam videos.
Thanks for posting this tutorial, I couldn't figure out that strange Ab chord.
Thanks for this, Warren. Could you please post the rhythmic vocalization for the strumming?
thx for keeping up the great work !
you're awesome.
How do you figure out strumming patterns
if you listen to the song and do a little tinkering yourself, you can figure it out
nice tutorial. easy to get it into!
You're probably my favorite teacher ;).
By the way, didn't mention this before (when I was telling off that catseatingclouds kid) but thanks a lot for posting this! I was having trouble getting the chorus right (the E-minor mostly) and this was a tremendous help.
