You can see his greatness in his english skills. When everyone else would be ashamed to even try speaking barok english, Manny didn't care. Throughout his career you can see improvements on his interviews and I guess that's what made him a champ. It's not being ashamed of slow and consistent progress. He could have just spoken in tagalog and let an interpeter put subtitles below him but he didn't. He wasn't afraid to be made fun of, because that is temporary when you're trying to improve.
