Wettability alteration of rock reservoir in order to Enhanced Oil recovery by Nanoparticles
Oil production from oil reservoirs is divided in three phases:
Primary oil production: Oil moves toward the production well by natural forces such as gas pressure. 12-15 % of the oil in the reservoir is produced in primary oil production phase. Natural forces are not enough in order to move oil toward the production well, So we need to use secondary oil production techniques.
secondary oil production technique: by injection of water or gas, the oil moves towards the production well. 15-20 % of the oil in the reservoirs is produced by secondary oil production techniques. After this phase more than 50 % of the oil remains in the reservoirs and we need to use other techniques. The new techniques that are used to increase oil production are called Enhanced oil recovery techniques (EOR).
Enhanced oil recovery (EOR): By changing the properties of liquids in the reservoir or changing the properties of rock, the oil production improves. One of the main techniques for enhanced oil recovery is wettability alteration of rock reservoir.
In this study we used nanoparticles to change the wettability of the rock by nanoparticles from highly oil-wet toward strongly water-wet.
One of the main challenges in oil production is enhanced oil recovery from oil-wet carbonate reservoirs, because oil has tendency to stick the walls of the porous media and water flooding technique is not productive in these rocks. Water does not imbibe the rock surface and oil has tendency to stick the rock and oil droplet can not move easily between the pores of porous media. If we change the wettability of rock by nanoparticles, the oil production improves. by adsorption of hydrophilic nanoparticles on the surface of the rock the wettability of the rock changes from oil-wet to water-wet. In water-wet rock, water has tendency to imbibe to the rock surface and by water flooding oil moves toward the production well and oil recovery increases. because nanoparticles has diameter less than 100 nm, they are less than micron sized pores of porous media and nanoparticles can easily move between the pores and adsorb to the rock surface. In an oil-wet rock, oil droplet spread over the surface and its contact angle with the surface is zero. in a water-wet rock oil droplet is not spread over the surface and its contact angle with the surface is more than 150 degree

Hello!, how do you prepare de rock sample?

After cutting into thin sections, you should age them for two days in toluene and ethanol and then wash them with DI water and dry them in oven. To make them oil-wet, age the obtained thin sections for about 1 month at 80 c in the crude oil.

It needs to be calculated. You should have the volume of the water that you inject to produce oil.
