@klubberzvonhatzenbuhl563 I have what was referred to as Type A. I finance commercial real estate in the US and 2/3's of my salary was based on the loans I closed. It always seemed like there was never a good time to be out of the office. Laptops and cell phones made it easier to join my husband and kids at our beach condo for long 4-day weekends, but I rarely use my entire month of vacation and the company allows it to accumulate to a total of 4 months.

Also, the thing about Americans and travel isn't only that our country is so huge and diverse, it's also that we don't get paid time off like Europeans do. When could we possibly be taking all of these vacations? What are we gonna fly from LA to Paris on a Friday night and fly back on Sunday to be at work on Monday? yes! When I was able to travel to Europe, I was only able to do that because I worked my ass off to have #1 choice in shifts when we did our shift swap, I did 3 14's a week. I saved up every pto and sick day. Scheduled my vacation far in advance on the time when PTO and sick time rolled over. Still didn't get all the hours covered so I had to call in sick on the day before I flew back to the State from Germany because I knew I had to do that, I made sure that my occurrences were 0. It was nearly 4 months of coordination on just of the end of my work.

Homelessness is very present here in America. My wife was homeless for a time, living in her car, and she is a medical professional. On gun culture... You are never truly free if you are in a rural environment and police won't get there for 20 or 30 minutes. It's necessary to protect yourself and your family and children in emergencies. If you can't protect yourself and it's going to take a lot of time for help to arrive, you are not actually free at all, just at the mercy of prediditary people.

You beat me to it, but I'll add that response times in cities can be appallingly slow, if there's a response at all, which isn't common, but it happens regardless. The police also have no legal duty to protect you, so how does being helpless make you safer? Finally, the fastest-growing subset of gun owners these days is single minority women. I wouldn't want to deprive them of their ability to defend themselves and their families.
That said, I can understand Europeans not comprehending why we have the 2nd Amendment, since a significant percentage of Americans doen't get it, either.

I'm an American born in the deep south, Alabama. I have been shot in the face/head and I'm still not afraid of guns. A terrible person pulled the trigger. The gun didn't just go off by itself. I raised my kids knowing how to handle many different types of guns and started taking them to the shooting range when they were in high school.
Alabama is a deeply religious state and we get stereotyped as being ignorant to other religions and religious practices. My two best friends that I've had since middle school and high school are Jewish. I had other friends that were Hindu and Muslim. I learned a lot from both but my friend that was Muslim really taught me to be a better Christian due to how often they pray and worship. I realized that I needed to work on my faith more and especially how often I said my prayers. I truly appreciated the insight into their beliefs and the insight it gave me into my own beliefs.

Saying that managers and supervisors "work" is a bit of a stretch. Sure, they clock in for 60 hours, but they do the least ammount of work out of anyone. When I worked in a resteraunt, the manager spent his entire shift drinking company liquor and doing cocaine in his office while also threatening to fire the waitresses if they didn't give him a blowjob every day. Regarding paid vacation time: A big difference between Europe and the USA is that we, in the USA, do not have government-mandated minimum vacation time. So, at least the last 3 employers I have had offered no paid vacation time at all, including holidays. I got time off, but I was not paid for time off. No paid sick leave, and no paid vacation time. Most medium and large companies have corporate policies that include paid vacation time, but it varies from company to company. It is very common to accrue paid sick leave and paid vacation time throughout the year. Increases to both often are a part of raises and contract renegotiations.

Illinois passed a law (PLAWA) in the last year or so to require paid leave for us. This state may suck overall, but that was something I could get behind, working full-time hours in part-time position. My company only gave it to people that were full-time positions, but then only really hired part-timers and worked them as either full- or part-time to get out of benefits. PLAWA requires companies to give 5 days of PTO to part-timers for any reason. Now I can actually get and use PTO when I go visit my sister and niece this summer :)

Politics here PO my dad a lot, cause Chicago rules the state. Taxes are high, gun laws getting more and more insanely strict to the point our Sheriffs don't want to enforce those laws.

Also, we are the worst state for low-income folks and 3rd worse for middle class folks.

Once we counted up all the holidays we automatically get, then the number of sick and vacation days we’re allotted per year, it turned out that the total number of days we could take off was fairly comparable to our friends in Dutchland. However, the number of days off you get in America varies per employer. Plus, just because you have a certain number of days, doesn’t mean you’re forced to take them. Now I have friends in Hong Kong who work five and a half days a week, and I know the Japanese work six days a week. I would say the amount of time Americans can take on the whole is much closer to that in Europe than in Asia!

Managers and bosses typically get vacation time, but low wage and hourly employees dont normally get time off. Working retail or restaurants etc require you to work holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving. For restaurants specifically christmas is one of the busiest days of the year.

I just want to say the most important things first: I really love channels like yours covering the United States, shedding some light on what we're really like, debunking bias/stereotypes about us, expressing your wholesome admiration for our country is a delight to watch. Some Americans, including me thought that the rest of the world didn't like us simply because we're American. I've seen so many people on the internet who are like you when it comes to America. I don't think my country is the best and has its issues to work, so criticisms of us aren't unfounded. But I'm not ashamed nor should I be for being American. And it's so nice to see people like you sharing your thoughts and learning what you can about us while sharing it with others all at once. Thank you for being so nice, open-minded and accepting, even if you don't understand. It's okay to not understand, understanding isn't required to treat others with decency. And you never disappoint with how decent, warm and friendly you seem in your wonderful videos.
Backward Americans who don't believe science do exist, but pro-science Americans including me, will either brush them off as crazy or an idiot and choose not to argue with because you simply can't argue with a crazy person. That they exist is worrying to me. The world tends to pay attention to the crazy Americans mostly. The United States isn't ruled by religious fanatics, it's ruled by capitalist elites who own multi-million-dollar large companies who are also the ones who hoard much of the United States wealth for themselves - this group makes up less than 5% (or less) of the United States total population by the way. The rest of the US's wealth is tied up in military spending. It's definitely not the average American citizen that gets any of that wealth. Most do not even own their own homes anymore.
There are Americans who love to work and work a lot, but an increasing number of Americans feel they are overworked and underpaid. But when we try to advocate for life/work balance and for our pay to go up to keep up with the cost of living, we get shamed for it by elites and people who are very well paid/wealthy from working very easy jobs, like mainstream news reporters who can't relate to most Americans because they're in a wealth bubble. Most Americans would want to live like Europeans when it comes to working but our government seems to be doing what they can to prevent that. The world seems to think Americans are ignorant but we're quick to criticize a public figure of some sort when they say or do something that is clearly out of touch, tone-deaf and so on.

It's important to remember that just because the federal government doesn't mandate vacation or holidays doesn't mean individual companies don't offer it as part of their benefits. I had a part-time job that paid 1.5x pay on holidays because it was at a hospital, and we can't not work holidays. We also accrued PTO, even as part-timers. Right now I have a job that gives us 5 days a year (which can roll-over year to year) and pays PTO on major holidays. And while it's far from every job that offers that, it isn't uncommon at all. Especially in areas where there is competition for good workers, companies will offer better benefits.

This doesn’t apply to all Jobs but the ones that pay a lot requires a lot of work. It’s not as easy as just clocking in at 9 and leaving at 5, once you’ve become responsible for something you have to take full ownership of it, so you almost always have to be available for it. These types of jobs also don’t pay hourly they are mainly salary types of jobs, but you do get bonuses, stocks and raises based on your performance and impact.

17 Our local schools have language options that include Spanish, German, French, and Mandrin. Spanish is from all over in the US, we have Mexicans yes, we also have people from Spain, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and several South American countries.
As far as traveling, I spent the first half of my life in Wisconsin, while there I traveled to Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana. Then I moved to Arkansas traveling through Illinois, Missouri, and part of Tennessee. Since being here I have been to California, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida. Every state I have at least spent one night in not just driven through. I think I'm pretty well traveled even though I've never been out of the country. My husband has been to Europe but seen very little of our country, that's the trade off. Most of my trips were taken between jobs.
Free healthcare is another trade off, you pay more taxes.... and how hard would it be to get an appointment to see a doctor today or even this week? I can. On the other hand you won't go into debt trying to get taken care of. So again there are good and bad points to each.
Vacation and sick time depends where you work, as part of the aerospace industry my husband started with one week and worked up to three vacation/sick time after 20 years. Being in retail only one place I worked offered vacation/sick time and only to full time employees. It was earned vacation/sick time so you had to work a whole year to get two weeks, basically each month of work gained one point something days. And yes sick time and vacation time are usually together so if you get sick forget vacation. Retail, Food related jobs, and other "low skill" jobs rarely get any and you can get fired for being sick, most go to work sick if they can. With a lot of jobs staying late isn't a choice it's a requirement.

Yes, we do not have a national minimum vacation day allotment for employees. That is something that is determined by the employer or by an agreement between the employer and union for union workers. Often the longer you are with one employer the more you get. I get 6 hours every 2 weeks, but I have been with the same company for 13 years. New hires get 2 hours every 2 weeks after the 6 month probation period. 6 years ago I was getting 12 hours of PTO every 2 weeks, since I am not a union worker my company was much freer to cut time off for regular workers but keep the old PTO for the office people. Lack of paid time off could explain some of why people in the US don’t travel as much outside of the country.

As far as the work culture goes here in the United States I think there are many factors to consider. first of all our healthcare is directly tied to our employment. These jobs may pay some or all of your insurance premiums which can be 10,000 dollars or more a year and they may offer better insurance with very low deductibles so often times people feel obligated to work in order to keep these benefits because losing them could cause an undue hardship on your family.
2nd thing to consider is that the amount of vacation time you get is usually dependent on how long you have worked for said company. Usually it's 1 week for the first year, 2 weeks until you hit year 5 then you may get 3 weeks or more. The issue is that there's no reason to be loyal to a job anymore. They will find ways to not pay you what you're worth, not give you raises or make your life difficult. Much like issue 1, It is usually BETTER to leave a job after a couple years in order to find one with better benefits since so much of what we earn is tied into that.
3rd has to do with managers and company owners. I myself am sitting on over a month of paid time off because the owner of the company I work for refuses to hire more people. Every vacation request I submit is denied even if it's more than a month in advance. Sometimes we are just unable to take that time off even if we want to.
There is so much more to this that I could get into but doing so would have to get into so many other nuanced aspects of life in the USA and no body really wants to read that. take care man!

  • @cynthiaschade3889
    @cynthiaschade3889 6 місяців тому

The vacation situation depends on the type of job you have and whether or not your employer offers it. Most low paying jobs do not offer paid vacation or time off. My job does not offer it, so if I take off I don't get paid for my time off. It just depends on the job/company. Most jobs offer 1 week (5 days) vacation per year. Some larger corporations offer 2 - 4 weeks depending on tenure with that company. Your time off is extended in relation to how long you've been with that company and your position within said company. This is usually only offered to the upper echelon of the company. Every company offers its own benefit package. I would say in my experience if there is a standard, 1 week would be the standard.

There are a lot of jobs in the US that have no paid vacation time at all. In those jobs that have vacation time, most people take the days for medical appointments and their children's sporting events. There are also people like me that have the hours but rarely take extra days off. For me they keep building up till I find myself taking two or three weeks off late in the year because I'm over the limit for what can be carried over to the next year. If they'd let me sell the vacation time back I would sell it, but the only option they offered me for doing so required me to agree to the sale a year before it occurs.

I've never had a vacation, working 40 plus years. I would like one though 😂

I speak two languages. Obviously English, but I'll bet you can't guess the other.
