I had the exact same problem with my K70 and contacted corsair about it because almost all keys have cracks in the stem and I'm even a light user ... but the support was great and they send me a replacement keyboard the k70 pro. I much prefer my older keyboard as the key legends looked nicer and it had a usb port on the back. the new one which I received does have a clean looking legend, but it is just different (I use a Japanese layout and the japanese letters are gone on the new one), and that usb was soo helpful for quickly reading my memory cards ^^" Thanks for showing how to repair these easily breakable stems!!
thanks for taking the time to comment and pretty chuffed that they replaced the keyboard, pretty cool
I've found that by using good silicone O rings reduces the chances of cracking a great deal. I tend to use O rings anyway to give a better feel and dampen the sound, depending on what key switches you use. I will however use your link to get a white set of corsair key caps for my wireless corsair mech. Stay safe.
Thanks for the info! i really need to try some o rings on this board it is a bit clakky
I bought my Corsair K70 RGB mk1 version in 2015 and it has worked perfectly every day for the last 6 years and as yet I have had NO problems with keycaps breaking!. I only wish you had tried using a UV glue to fix your keycaps!!
uv glue might be a good idea. this was a used board so i have no idea how it was treated and judging by the amount of keys that are loose or popping off i guess there might have been a few rage quits
Clear plastic was enough and saved me sir, thanks a lot
Great to hear!
My Delete key broke off my K60 Pro RGB after owning it for a few days! I don't even mash my keys or anything, just noticed it pop off and saw the stems were all breaking. Contacted Corsair, they wanted $14.99 for delivery! Was going to go back up to Currys and figured to save fuel money, SoI just put a bit of blutac in it and it actually feels sturdier then it did before haha and works just as well as the other keys. The RGB light still shines through it as well.
Further more, I ordered a icue 4000x case after watching another video of yours, waiting for it arrive. :)
4000x is a really nice case, good choice
great video, i have the exact same keyboard, arrived with damaged keycaps after delivery, thanks mate
No problem 👍
I like RTV between the stem and the cap. Just a small amount in the cap. RTV or Silicon Glue is flexible so that you can remove the cap later.
I have a new K95 Platinum and the key caps have been popping off of it too. These are not broken or worn. It is just a bad design. So Silicon glue will help to keep caps secure. Just a little on the stem, but I will need to experiment with it first. It is actually the fault of the switch and cap makers. Maybe O-Rings would work. It is not as bad as I am making it out to be, but it is weird.
I bought a K70 for my girlfriend. After a month of fighting with the iCUE software she sent it back because it would not let her send the word Chewy. The keyboard stopped after the first C letter and brought up the definition of the C language in Google. So, on Friday I bought a slightly used K95 Platinum as a backup or for her if she wanted. She wants nothing to do with it. She is happy with her Dell Quietkey white keyboard.
I have to say since using computer keyboards, going on 32 years I have never had a key come off or even been loose! Seriously. I'm actually surprised to hear you say that is is a "quite common occurrence"....
yeah weird i have had at least three keyboards do it, could be my typing action that does it?
Good diy video Mike. Never thought about the wear n tear on expensive keyboards! Nothing lasts forever though!👍
Very true!
Why not just 3D print a stem brace/cast? I'm doing this right now because my tab key stem cracked lol
great idea
@@mikesunboxing it was a good idea, until i realized how little room there is for the stem already. 😅 would not fit back onto the keyswitch with a cast on.
@@InspireFPV That sucks 😞
No matter what. Mike covers things no other youtube do.
Thank's for the tip. i'll use it in the future. wait is this video from the future ???
this video is from now but this message will be received in your future
@@mikesunboxing Thinking of how hard it may become in the future to get new parts 🤔
Well done for flying the repair-it flag Mike. Having worked in the UK IT Industry where they just post a new keyboard to users for any fault on a keyboard and tell the users to just bin the old one, this is what should be happening, repair it! I’ll get off my high horse now! Great video, thanks Mike. Tip for fixing keyboards - WD-40 Specialist Anti Friction Dry PTFE Lubricant
gonna buy some of that for kaths keyboard it is a bit sticking in places
So, I had a thought that if the fractures on the stem are on the left & right sides, then you could maybe repair them by gluing a tiny square of plastic (maybe cut from an old used up gift card) onto the left & right side of the stem. If it's small enough, it shouldn't interfere with the switch. Haven't tried it yet myself though, so I could be entirely wrong!
Maybe 🤔 Let us know if it works, if you try it
I had the first K70 and never had this problem, then I bought the K70 RGB MK2 low profile and it happens a lot of times, I need to take care to my dogs don't eat the keys. I don't know if it's because it was low profile, or Corsair did something wrong with this model
think they used cheaper plastic or thinner stems
How do I know if my key switches will pull out as you mention? I have swapped my keykaps today, and sod's ;law the first one pulled the actual coloured step out with it, I now can not get the stem and spring back into the key itself.

I use the HyperX black pudding keycaps on my Wooting Two keyboard as it came with crap ABS keys which went shiny in a matter of a couple months of light to light-medium use.
i bought some of those for georges ducky and it looks great
Never have had a keycap split and I've used a lot of keyboards. My razer blackwidow ultimate 2014 has held up pretty well. Friend gave it to me after it started double typing. Still has the issue now and then but its much better since I flushed the switches with alcohol. Plan to mod it in the future. Have a really nice iron. The Pinecil. It's a cheaper TS100 clone that is much better out of the box.
Also what you said on warranty. Its sort of a grey area but here in the US it's up to to the manufacturer to prove you did a bad repair. Warranty seal stickers don't mean anything. Look up Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act sometime if you're bored. Fairly certain, could be wrong though.
yes the right to repair is a good thing and hopefully it becomes a world wide standard
I’ve only seen, never experienced, keycaps coming off on a handful of our office place Dell e-waste complimentary keyboards and IT just keep a few broken ones to replace other lost keycaps.
i have only had this on three or so keyboards. the coolermaster conbo set i bought ages ago, those would fall off just looking at them! The gamemax strike the delete key used to pop off easily and this corsair one. but it is much better now, just waiting for the next one to decide to try and escape
Hi, Mike. This is an interesting video because I’ve never had a key come off, and I type 6 to 8 hours per day. Perhaps it’s just my light touch that keeps my keyboards from exploding. LOL
yes i am pretty heavy handed and it does seem to happen more at least for me with red switches, none of my browns have ever tried to escape
UHU glue is great and cheap, Poundland always have stock. Never thought of using the toothpick with it, even for other jobs, as UHU is very very stringy. Cheers Mike
the toothpick is your best friend when trying to apply a very small amount of anything, works really well when touching up paint on the car also
My A key doesn't work properly. I often have to double or triple tap it in order for it to work. I've tried replacing the key with the spares that came with the keyboard and that still didn't fix it. Something tells me it's internal and beyond my capabilities to repair. It's less than a year old lol.
have you replaced the switch or the key cap? you probably need to desolder the old switch and replace it
@@mikesunboxing I've only changed the key cap. The old switch as you say is probably the culprit but I don't know anything about desoldering. I expected so much more from a $200 Corsair keyboard..
Id highly advise against the cling film/saran option ive ruined at least 2 sets of keycaps doing that. Even with 2x o rings to try and hold them together they wobble and fling off and become unusable. Your better off fixing it with a more semi permanent solution.
You can use stuff like mike mentions, acetone if the keycaps are abs, or just plain old super glue if you use the same cling film to allow you to hold a switch stem inside the keycap while the super glue sets into the cap and saran film.
Although ive yet to test the super glue long term, ive heard of great success with various super glue and epoxy super glue options. (Not mix and set epoxy but epoxy labeled super glue like i believe krazy glue and gorilla glue have.)
There are also tons of really good craft glues for this kinda stuff, i have a few ive been meaning to try i believe one is called g-s hypo cement. Super glue powder doe not sound great so do make sure to pick a good option and maybe not the standard super glue so much. Im fairly certain though that gorilla glue and loctite have nice not basic basic super glue options labeled as super glues. Just look up best glues for X or Y material based on keycaps, typically abs or pbt maybe polycarbonate if you have clear ones. I find the mix and set epoxies like in the video to be hard to work with and not extremely precise. They give you a popsicle stick to apply the stuff with usually lol.
Very disappointed with my K70. I thought that spending well over £100 on a keyboard that it would be a premium quality item that would last a lifetime. In reality the key cap stems split (as in the video) and started just falling off. I was going to buy some replacements, but then LEDs started dying too. That's my last Corsair keyboard, and indeed my last premium keyboard. I'll go back to buying £30 keyboards and replacing them every few years . . .
try the MSI GK50 or GK71 sonic, it is built like a tank
The R key on my keyboard won't work, and on my on-screen keyboard as well, when my pc starts up, it works foR a sec then that key becomes unresponsive, I have a CoRsair K100 keyboard, I'm going crazy, and I don't know what happened, it just staRted out of the blue?
there is a factory reset option on the keyboard try that worked for me with the k70 and the hash / pound key
Thanks for doing this video Mike. My son's gamemax click RGB Keyboard has 4 keys that have come off and despite putting them back on on they keepcoming off. I will give this a try. Otherwise I might have to get you to recommend a RGB Keyboard for £30 lol ..
No worries buddy hope it works out for you otherwise let me know
All of the caps from my Corsair double shot PBT set have cracked because they were made too tight. I planned on never taking them off, because they were so hard to press on I was worried that taking them off would rip the switches off of the board... But now they practically fall off and the wider unstabilized keys rock back and forth enough to touch the mounting plate on both sides. Would not buy Corsair keycaps again.
jeez that sounds awful, sorry to hear that
what if that part completly chipped off?
that might be a bit more difficult, if it is for the keyboard in the video, corsair sell the keys individually or you can buy a complete new set of pudding style caps here on ali express really cheaply s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DDO1ZWB
i wish i knew that key caps easily all but fly off the keyboard when dropped before i purchased a mechanical keyboard
Nice hint, Mike! I will have to give that a shot if am too hard n my keyboard next time! :)
i think i am too heavy handed or i let the keys rebound to freely and the force pops them off. Also the temp here goes up and down a lot so expansion and contraction might be happening
0:49 No wonder they crack and pop off. The stem is so much thinner than the older Corsair keyboards thicker keycap stems. That is why people say I never had that problem with my much older Corsair keys popping off.' Corsair must be making bank with people reordering spares.
Great, no try to fix logitech roamer g :(
Garbage keyboard quality brand new and its got keys falling off and splitting all over it
My K70 keys popping off! E key :(
yeah it seems to be very common on this deck
I accidentally broke a key of my father's keyboard and I used jello tape to fix it because I didn't had glue. It looks stable but it seems that it's not useable or at least you can't press it. I will leave it like that and I hope my father won't see it.
I lost the "i" on an old "Acer" windows 7 laptop ... Managed to find the individual spring and key on eBay (£2.50) ... (Sigh sausage fingers) ... Ended up replacing entire keyboard for £7.50 (eBay) ... Why do all recent mobile devices have built in obsolescence (Stupid Question) ... Also am a bit disappointed that my laptop with AMD A6 9220 (Although old chipset ) ... Is not supported for "Windows 11" despite the release date for the laptop being only 2018 and meeting all the hardware requirements of "Windows 11" .... "IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT MIKE !!! " (not really)
got a video coming soon to override the TPM and secure boot and processor so stay tuned
