Why We're Not Celebrating Halloween

  • Hey friends! As we pivot slightly away from our most recent series on the Spirit Realm, we thought a discussion on Halloween is both timely and relevant to what we've been discussing previously. While we both grew up trick or treating, dressing in costumes, and even going to ghost and ghoul-themed parties, our perspective on how we choose to observe Halloween has shifted greatly since becoming parents and journeying with the Lord in recent times. While we do not seek to pass judgment or condemn anyone who doesn't see eye to eye with us on this topic, we do desire to share our thoughts and convictions on why we are choosing to not celebrate Halloween and what we are still trying to figure out ourselves. Let us know in the comments what your thoughts are on the whole topic of Halloween!

    I saw the title and clicked "like" first thing. I think a lot of Christians are sleeping on this topic and mindlessly celebrating the holidays that the world celebrates. I was too just a couple of years ago. THANK YOU for addressing the hard topics. EVERYTHING has a spiritual impact. I love you guys!
    Phil 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

    SO excited for this! We have a 2.5 year old and a 1 year old and it’s our first year not doing Halloween, Santa and all the worldly made up holidays. I’ve felt such conviction and ignored it last year. At the end of this life I stand before God and will give him an account of how I raised the children He gave me and if I steward them well. I parent now striving and praying to guide them to Him and away from the world.

      We are doing the same thing for the man-made holidays. We’re not even celebrating Christmas this year. We’re now going to be celebrating Konica because my husband grew up in a Jewish home in a messianic Jewish home and we want to implement that in our kids lives.

    This is how my aunt and uncle started with their fundamentalism, (not saying M&J are heading this direction but that was the case for my relatives.) I still get lectures if I try to send them a family picture Christmas card. Today, after leaving many churches over the years for not being up to their standards, no church is “correct,” so they do church with some online community they found. You can’t have any normal conversations with them because they always want to tell you how they are doing life the right way and the implication is that you are not. I say all this because we all know Christians can be luke warm, they can be overly legalistic, they can be perhaps too focused on spirit of grace that they are too permissive. I’ve not met one Christian who has everything figured out and we are all falling short. If our goal is to bring God glory then that’s wonderful, but if it is to make ourselves feel like we have things all figured out, and we are better than other (more worldly) Christians, that’s pride. I find Halloween to be something, that for Christians who don’t celebrate it, they want to make it well known to everyone around them that they don’t partake. Why not just live by quiet example. Why does it have to be a call of attention to their self to let you know about their own conviction?

      How does Halloween glorify God? I think they made the disclaimer that this is what they do for their home and there is no convicting others. If people get upset it maybe a conviction they are fighting. I personally appreciate this type of video as a new toddler mom that wants to learn more about this topic. I may or may not agree with it all but that’s ok we can take what we need and go.

      This is definitely the direction they’re headed. You can’t have any type of normal conversation with people like this and they end up making you not want to follow any sort of religion bc it becomes cult like

    • @lauradel9
      @lauradel9 8 місяців тому +1

      @@allykimpton2029I don’t know their hearts but what I can point to is 1 Corinthians 8 and 1 Colossians 2:16-17. I think a lot of us are wanting to do right by God to follow scripture and maybe we just have differences in perspectives. I think we should be open to discussing things like this but in a way where we are not accusatory and judgmental (and maybe I didn’t do a good job of this initially). I have been thinking recently how I can glorify God more while still partaking in standard holidays and it’s been beneficial, so I’m thankful for this video for that. I’ve also been reading about how many Jewish people find it to be cultural appropriation for Christians to celebrate Jewish holidays which is a perspective I hadn’t heard (and I haven’t formed an opinion on it), but I think again calls to how we can form different perspectives on things while all wanting to navigate things to glorify God and be kind to others.

    It's so incredible how much your walk with the Lord and convictions you all have, have coincided with my husband and I's journey with the lord. Vanity, modesty, biblical roles of husband and wife, and now holidays. I'm always surprised when weeks or a few months after my husband I speak about the convictions we have and what the Bible says, and what the holy spirit is speaking to us, then boom you make a video about it. There is a movement for sure happening amongst the world, and God is bringing his children closer to him. So grateful for you two sharing ❤

    I think as us Christians who are aware of the spiritual world and spiritual consequences, we can forget that the blood of Christ covers us. If passing out bags with a Bible verse and a candy helps spread the love of God and may wake someone up to Jesus.. who are we to hide behind the fear of participating in something demonic? I believe part of Jesus gift to us on the cross was to allow us the spiritual freedom and covering to DO things like this. To step into the world and bring the light of Jesus to it. Without it compromising our salvation or ability to walk in God’s presence. Don’t allow what enemy has perverted keep you from sharing the Gospel in the most effective way. 🩵🕊️ follow what the Holy Spirit convicts you of but I felt compelled to share this

    Hello, I’m a Catholic Christian, I been following you for a good 3-4 yrs and I honestly love everything you share. Everything you said about Halloween I’m all in with what you guys shared. The world has taken holy meaningful days and always distort them. We all know why this happens unfortunately. In the Catholic world we are currently in what it called Hallow tide. Today is “All Hallows Eve” hallow meaning Holy and eve is evening or a day before a Holy Day. Tomorrow November 1st will be All Saints Day, which is a very holy day. We remember those people who persevered in their faith, and are already in the Kingdom of Heaven with Our Lord. It’s a Holy Day of Obligation. Then November 2nd is All Souls Day. We celebrate Mass and pray for our dear loved ones. We also get a plenary indulgence if we take the time to pray in a cemetery for those souls. Besides prayer and going to Mass, us Catholics can celebrate in getting together like having dinner or a party. In our household Today on All Hallows Eve, so a day before the Holy Day (All Saints Day) we get together and our kids even us Adults dress up as our favorite Saint and enjoy some Catholic games and food! This is a fun way for us to get ready to celebrate the upcoming Feast Days. Thanks for always being so open and so true about your guys faith transformation as you guys are continuing to learn, because I too am daily getting deeper into my Catholic roots! May God Bless your family!

      the St. Michael statue idea and passing out holy scripture or items along with Candy is something to definitely help evangelize!
      Sharing a prayer dedicated to him:
      St. Michael the Archangel,
      defend us in battle.
      Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
      May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
      and do thou,
      O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
      by the power of God,
      thrust into hell Satan,
      and all the evil spirits,
      who prowl about the world
      seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. .

    I’m an ex occult, witch, new age, devil worshipper. I didn’t grow up in the church nor did I have family members that did. I grew up celebrating these holidays without any meaning, it was just gift getting and seeing family. As I became apart of the new age movement I realized how demonic these holidays are. Halloween is very spiritual for those in the new age it’s pure evil and I advise against it 100%. Paganism is behind these holidays and I urge anyone to research the history of these practices. It’s interesting and eye opening. I don’t say this to be condemning, but protecting ♥️

    I was sooo thankful for the interview you guys did a few years ago on Halloween. My husband and I had already decided not to do Halloween with our kids, but it was so nice having some historical background in case people have questions about it. But even without that, I don't want my kids thinking it's fun while they're little so that they can start searching out the scary stuff when they get older. It never just stays as a fun, innocent thing and I don't want my kids thinking the evil and scary parts are "just for fun." It's real evil behind those things. They will make their own decisions when they're older, but it's our job to teach them the biblical values now.

    This video came at the perfect time! I’ve been feeling so much conviction about Halloween now that I’ve done so much research on the spirit realm and come to a better understanding of what’s actually taking place. As a child, I grew up looking forward to dressing up and my mom hand making our costumes, counting how much candy I’ve collected. But Halloween was fun as children because the world “made it fun” and I think we can still have fun with our children and not celebrate it, we can still create amazing memories with them without celebrating it. I’ve grown so much in my walk with Jesus, I cant turn my face against my convictions. My husband and I don’t have kids yet but we’ve been trying for a year now. And I think my husband is getting closer to feeling these convictions as well but he’s not there yet. I looove your perspective on how you can turn this opportunity not to hide from the children and parents coming to your door but taking it as an opportunity to be a light on a dark holiday, and share the gospel! Playing worship music! Who knows how many seeds could be planted and I feel like it would create beautiful memories with our future babies!

    Halloween was never really celebrated in my home. In Poland, on November 1st and 2nd we celebrate All Saint's Day (1st) and All Soul's Day (2nd). 1st of November is a free day. On those days we remember people who passed away, we visit graves of our lost loved ones and meet with family. It's a time to reflect on life and pray.

    I am going to say this because I wish someone had told my parents what happens when you raise your kids like this. Hi! Milena and Jordan, I’m the kid that was raised exactly like this and is now a woman in my twenties. My parents did the same things, didn’t allow us to celebrate Halloween and would call out those who decorated and point out that they were not honoring God or serving him and that it was evil. Guess what? Because I was a literal child. 7-8 years old. All that did was teach me to be insanely judgmental. Because not only would they point out what these people were doing “wrong” they would explain why. That it worships the devil and demons. Did I ask?? I was a child! I didn’t have those thoughts yet. I didn’t look at decorations and think, “wow those people are worshipping the devil what sinners” Absolutely not!!!! I thought, “cool they get candy and get to dress up as their favorite character! I wish I could do that!” Halloween itself is from the holiday All Saints Day. It is not inherently pagan. It only became scary or satanic because of what people did to it. But the actual holiday is not bad. Why do we have to make it bad? Why do parents have to find the bad in everything and teach their kids to look for the worst!! I have so many battles I have to fight mentally because of the way my parents didn’t allow me to do things and explained how everyone that did those things weren’t following God like the Bible explicitly states. When many times it doesn’t actually explicitly state most things. Everything does not have to have some alter understanding or evil to it. Some things can be simple. Let kids be kids. Because when they get to be an adult they are going to struggle immensely in their relationships because they judge everyone and everything unnecessarily and struggle to not immediately think the worst about everything because everyone around them is a sinner. I’m telling you, my parents said many of the exact same things as @asformeandmyhousepodcast and I really wish they hadn’t because I definitely would NOT struggle so hard mentally just to exist. 2 and 4 years olds/3 and 5 year olds DO NOT need to be thinking about demons and satan and they probably won’t ask unless you are allowing that outlet. Let them be children and be innocent and have fun. Sincerely,
    The adult who was raised like this

    • @TheStyleMarket
      @TheStyleMarket 8 місяців тому +24

      I’m also the kid who was raised exactly like this and now a woman in my 30’s. And I have the opposite feelings you do. I’m so glad my parents shielded me from this demonic holiday. My kids are 4 and 2 years old and just like Jordan and Milenas kids they too point out the darkness in the decorations that are out on people’s houses. Kids get scared with those decorations. There’s nothing innocent or pure about it. There’s a quote that Anton Lavey (the founder of the satanic church) said “I’m glad that Christian parents allow their kids to worship the devil at least one night a year”

    • @charleedak
      @charleedak 8 місяців тому +4

      @@TheStyleMarket I’m talking about the kids not pointing it out but being told unnecessarily. Kids might think decorations look scary, and that’s all it needs to be. They and my parents had to go in-depth unnecessarily for that age. I don’t like Halloween either, I don’t really celebrate it. But that’s my choice, I’m not being forced to believe a certain view about it. That holiday just isn’t for me and I’m not going to glorify it to my children if I have any one day. But I’m not going to be so aggressive towards everyone else about it, to my children. That’s what I’m trying to get at.

    • @Jackie-fy7ke
      @Jackie-fy7ke 8 місяців тому +5

      I get both point of views and I was raised the same. I think that we need to have a balance I’ve seen time and time Again from kids who I grew up in church who were so shielded become many things the church was against because once they’re let loose they want to just go wild. You have to allow things to happen naturally when they start asking or start wondering then you explain. However I was so happy and am grateful to grow up the way I did because it really helped me so avoid a lot of things that could have affected me today. Also there is no better gift you can give your children than the fear in God and the chance to have everlasting life.

    • @devondougherty1209
      @devondougherty1209 8 місяців тому +3

      I agree with this
      I’m not religious at all I don’t believe in god but i believe there’s something greater than us
      The catholic religion has some of the most judgmental mean people I’ve ever met in my life (not saying this about them) and then things this religion teaches are literal lies.
      I don’t think every little thing in the world needs to be tied to “the lord” or “the enemy”
      Example the lord didn’t tell you how to speak, you chose to speak like that as a mindful respectful adult, he didn’t give you ur meal, u cooked the meal for your family.
      Every single story to ur kids doesn’t need to be a bible story, tell them a normal story

      I say this with all the love in my heart. When you say this religion has a bunch of lies are you saying that because you’ve read the Bible in entirety and studied it? Or are you saying that because you’ve heard others say it and you’re tagging along? I asked this question because I used to be the same way, but I had never actually taken the time to read the Bible or study Christianity and then once I did, I was very humble to find that I was wrong. I had made assumptions off of what other people had said about the Bible, or the religion, instead of actually looking into it for myself

      Follow your convictions. I am convicted to not celebrate Halloween. But I love Christmas and love a season where people sing gospel songs. I center gift giving as a reflection of the ultimate gift God gave us. I won't be doing the Santa thing regarding gifts, but Saint Nicholas was not a pagan figure and has a wholesome backstory so I don't have an issue with Santa imagery, just the lying and idolizing. But God may change my heart on this one day and I have to be prepared for that. But right now, I feel like I honor and glorify Him in the way I celebrate.

    Romans 14 actually does speak to Halloween more than we think. The context was drinking and eating meat that was sacrificed to idols. The Jewish Christians were condemning the gentiles for eating meat and wine that came from the markets (where all the meat was sacrificed to idols before being sold). The wine was also filtered with skins that had been sacrificed to idols. Paul calls those who don’t eat the meat “weaker brothers” for they were not recognizing how much stronger Christ was in them than the outward idols. The gentiles who were eating the meat and drinking the wine were called stronger believers because they knew that Christ was bigger than meat sacrificed to idols. This passage was a game changer for me and really helped clarify the power of Christ.

    I felt very convicted about Halloween this year. I struggled because my kids only get to eat candy twice a year (Easter and Halloween) and my 4yo was so looking forward to getting candy. However- I decided not going door to door to get candy won't hurt her. This really got cemented for me because people in our area have been going so far with their decorations my 2yo is scared to go outside. Prayer is powerful for soothing a child's heart! But yeah... never again.
    And don't worry, bought my kids a bag of candy and we will have a pumpkin pie tea party. We will have our own celebration just in the name of loving Jesus and each other 🤷‍♀️ we can enjoy fall and leave Halloween completely out of it

      This year with our 2 under 2 we went to a non-spooky, fall themed pumpkin patch, picked out 2 pumpkins big enough to fit each baby in and took the most adorable photos… as I type this I have those pumpkins baking in the oven so I can make purée out of them and turn them into all sorts of pumpkin treats (we plan to share with neighbors too 🥰)
      I totally agree that fall can be celebrated without Halloween and I think our new traditions will be even more fun and Jesus honoring 🥰

    What about when Paul’s said about eating the meat that were given to idols ? He says if you are a mature Christian you can just eat it because you know that your God is more powerful but if a new comer sees that as oh no ! Then just don’t eat it meaning being a mature person in Christ is not letting those worldly things be more powerful than God so as long as you are not dressing up as the devil or evil things and you are just taking the opportunity to go out with your friends and get candy ( specially as kids) I don’t think is wrong because why will you give the devil so much power. When that day you can go out and also be dress up as a biblical character and also preach the gospel or give out bible verses ? Is all about the heart at the end of the day and what God is convicting you or maybe new comers will be just mortified by celebrating Halloween but you can still go out that day and enjoy it in your own way.
    Also wouldn’t that mean we can’t celebrate birthdays either ?

    We had this conversation in our church recently and it seems that me as well as so many other younger moms have been having so much conviction on celebrating Halloween, and this is our first year me and my husband decided not to celebrate or do anything with Halloween specifically or more so “Santa” when it comes to Christmas! It’s so great that the Lord has been really putting it on us as women, wives, and mothers in stewarding our Children, husbands, and growing families more in Christ and his word versus the worldly views of the holiday seasons. We still will be having Christmas movies and things but also incorporating mostly what Christmas actually means within the Bible versus the world, but I just have felt such conviction and encouragement to really make this Christmas time about Jesus and teaching our children about Jesus versus the worldly outlook on Christmas or specifically just Presents and Santa. Also making this time a year about giving versus the selfishness that I grew up knowing in receiving gifts as a child but not ever giving back to others. I would love and pray to be able to go out of my way and out of my comfort zone to help others especially in this colder season when families and children need such basic necessities to get through this cold. 💖

    I was saved not just from witch craft but also Halloween because of a mixture of having more experience and knowledge of Halloween through the occult & things that god pointed me to when saving me. Here is a quote along with all the scripture god guided me to see that made me give up all my Halloween stuff & occult stuff within a couple of weeks/months. & completely stop celebrating a holiday me and my husband had loved so much our entire lives till we were saved and given the conviction to stop.
    Anton levay, the founder of the satanic temple is quoted saying this about Halloween “I’m glad Christian’s let their kids worship the devil at least one night out of the year.”
    Bible verses
    Leviticus 20:27, Deuteronomy 18:9-14, Isaiah 5:20, Isaiah 8:13, Isaiah 8:19, Jeremiah 10:2-3, Micah 5:12-13, Mark 7:8, Mark 7:13, John 3:19-20, John 8:12, Romans 12:2, Romans 13:12, Romans 12:21, 2 Corinthians 6:17, Ephesians 4:14, Ephesians 5:11, Ephesians 6:12, Philippians 3:2, Philippians 4:8, Colossians 2:20-23, 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22, 2 Thessalonians 3:6, 1 Timothy 4:1, James 4:7, 1 Peter 5:8, 1 John 2:15-17, 1 John 3:4, Revelation 22:15
    (Obvious I also have some inside knowledge of why this holiday is so important in the occult world & the history of its origins. It is dark, demonic, bloody, etc. god tells us we can not choose to sit at the table of demons and his table. We must choose one. So I chose.)

    I have a 5 year-old who asks one million questions. How can I tell him about Jesus everyday and then one night per year-- oh yeah go run around looking at gore and horror, accetpting candy from strangers, it's fine.
    Let there be no hint of... God wants ALL of our heart. That's what changed me this year and convicted me to really make a clear line in the sand. We watched homeward bound tonight as a family and ignored Halloween outside. It was wonderful!
    We started a new tradition we call River day. We choose the weekend closest to Halloween. We go to our favorite river and share what we are thankful God did that year--whether hard or exciting. We will keep a notebook for years to come. Then we build a memorial like in Joshua 3 of the river stones as a memorial to the Lord. It was a fantastic day. Creating THAT core memory is exiting to us.
    We started celebrating passover last year too. It felt so meaningful and helped us to feel like we were creating purpose in our celebrations.

      To be a “devout” Christian is the exact opposite of “to each his own”. But this is not to debate your choice to celebrate Halloween. It’s simply to point out the contradiction. “To each his own” is actually a different wording of a satanic law.

    • @arielfonseca7148
      @arielfonseca7148 9 місяців тому +10

      I will say I believe that Christians do get very legalistic about Halloween. As Christians we're supposed to examine our heart and our motives and intentions. I don't believe that dressing up our kids in cute (now I don't agree with gore or anything like that) costumes and allowing them to get some candy is CELEBRATING HALLOWEEN. I think many Christians project and put the intention and motive on another brother or sister for simply taking their child trick or treating. It could more appropriately be called trick or treat day.
      Just for context, I grew up going to st Andrew's here in FL, a church founded by r.c. sproul. My family has done a phenomenal job of living out a sacrificial, gospel centered life such that I have been called back (by the grace and sovereignty of God) and received Christ after drifting in my late teens. Trick or treating holds a special place in my heart, it was always for us about dressing up and seeing our neighbors to get some candy.
      There is a difference between celebrating a pagan holiday, and enjoying a modernized tradition.
      Many of the same Christians who rail against halloween who you might regard as holy and "on point in the faith" may be dead in their sin and not even true believers at all. I can't stress enough, it's about your intention and motives and examining your heart.
      So if you love the blood and gore and horror of Halloween, and it might be time to take a look why you love that so much. But if dressing your kids up as cowboys and ballerinas to get some candy is as far as your intention goes, to one fellow believer in Christ to another, I don't believe there's anything sinful in that at all. Let's stop the legalism

      @@arielfonseca7148getting dressed up and going out at night is exactly where the origin of Halloween comes from. As Christians we have to stop justifying why to take part in this holiday. Finding easy to do something similar is still taking part in it. As someone who did not grow up in this, trust when I say your kids will not be missing out. That’s a lie that we create in our minds a lot. You can create memories and fun other ways and on other days.

      @virgeleyp.4040 You have a point to an extent about it being okay for children to miss out on something that is bad for them. However I still stand by the personal intent and motivation argument. It's a heart/motive thing, and really the defense I hear is "dOnt ParTiCiPATE iN pAgAn hOliDaYs". I fully expect each person who holds this belief to get rid of every last tradition that does not come about from Christian tradition, and that's a lot. That would be irrelevant, silly and legalistic.
      We should also remember we are biblically reminded to not shame another brother or sister in Christ for having differences in opinion/conviction, so I think we can agree to disagree. God judges the heart. My 2 year old was a little ballerina tonight who got some candy in her bucket, and that was about all there was to it.

    For Christmas, this one was VERY hard for me. God spoke to my husband first about it and how it was pagan and the Bible says to not do as the pagans do. But I couldn’t let it go because of the joy I felt Christmas brought me. Until one year the Lord was really tugging on my heart and I submitted. We celebrated the Festival of Lights (Hanukkah) 2021 and OMG the moment we lit the first candle I felt the presence of God so heavy in our home it was so beautiful. It was as if He was proud of us for truly keeping the holidays He mentions in the world. And ever since then I understood the false joy I experienced in Christmas was just the spirit behind it which had nothing to do with God. I HIGHLY encourage believers to celebrate Hanukkah and the other holidays that are mentioned in the Bible. You will experience God like never before.❤
