Gotta say it. ScoutCrafter is the man! Really enjoy these videos. Always enjoy his projects which showcase his creativity and knowledge with all types of tools.
Beautiful work. Yesterday evening my sweet neighbor lady gave me her father-in-law’s Garland No. 1 which spent most of its life in an Alabama cotton mill. Cotton mills were a dangerous place, a spark could easily cause a cotton dust explosion. The hammer is beyond well used and needs the rawhide and wood handle replaced. Thanks for educating me with your video. And Semper Fi!
Another in a long series of “Good to Know” tips, tricks, and knowledge for those of us who may never have seen or done this, and now thanks to your efforts maybe not as daunting a task. My struggle is with the .25 cent ball peen head from the flea market and the ridiculous cost of a replacement handle when I can find one locally. Many Thanks once again!
Thanks John! So many times I have set a project aside because I come across an issue and I want to be cautious. Somehow you create great videos that explain not only how to do something, but the thought process behind it. I truly appreciate all you do.
That was really something. I have never seen one of those hammers before and the process to put a handle on, wow. Nice looking altogether and finished!
During my apprenticeship, one of the fellows I worked with calle it a "dead pin cotter fitting". I have never forgotten it Not seen it done for years. Wonderful design head much better that our old Thor soft face mallets. But, If a hammer is going to get ten or twelve years work, two and a half hours work to fit and fettle it are not wasted. Many Thanks John, you just brought back some memories. Bob (Weston super Mare). England
Nice work! I did a version of that hammer with rawhide inserts for a friend! The nut removal was the tricky part for me. Hammer handles are tough but so rewarding!
Hi John, what a great hammer restoration. Nice job aligning the holes. I love the color and the lettering. That is a great hammer. We still are in hi temps here in Virginia, so we are waiting for those cooler temps. Another great video. Best Regards, John
The guy from Farmcraft, john, made an awesome handle for a ditch ax, but then he used it to make a casting made fromm thousands of cans he melted down. Once he went that extra miles I felt like a 2 year old....I haven't attempted to hang a handle sice 😢😂. That turned out awesome. Cheers
That was amazing! Precision lathe work, neat drill press technique, and fantastic finish! Custom wedge worked like it was made for this handle. Thank you for the education!
Hi John. WOW!! Great video. Never have seen a hammer like that one. Great job on that one. Some tips also. You have a great day. Still to hot hear. 👍👍❤..
Beautiful job on hanging the hammer handle, that type of hammer is very versatile, have used them in the past, mostly with leather heads. Thanks for the video sir, another fun one.
Way too hi-tech a hammer for me. I just have barely got an orange dead blow hammer BUT just got through watching a deal about the last day the Linotype ran in the city. Had one in our county seat I used to go watch as a kid. WILDLY interesting. God Bless YOu!
Well done on lining the holes up. At first glance I thought you would have put the head in a vice, ran a long rod through and clocked the vice up. But your way is simpler and quicker.
Beautiful job and know exactly what you mean about it not being easy I’ve been trying to do a hand axe and just gave up put it in the back of the garage maybe will start on it again next year 😂
I'd rather go to the dentist than hang a handle on a hammer... that is a beautiful hammer even if it is John deere green and gold 😁 real beauty I think! Your dust extraction on the lathe looks nice.. I need to come up with something other than a fan on high vowing across the lathe 😁 good stuff Brother John!
Can i suggest a topic for one of your videos? What different hammer faces are used for. Eg why use an aluminium face, why use a leather face, why use a rubber face, why use a copper face etc. That would be quite educationalal. Cheers, Ian.
That looks amazing. Great to see some lathe work (subtle request for more of that). Have you ever tried turning off-centre - to get the oval handle shape?
Beautiful job hanging that hammer John, that's an interesting design, but with it's own challenges, I have a few of the Birmingham (UK) made "Thor" Hammers that are similar but they have a different locking design, also have some of the "Halder" brand German Hammers - they go up to 125mm diameter ! Great tip using the brass pin to allign the pin hole. I guess I've hung a couple of dozen hammers & axes now, and I suppose it gets a little easier with experience but just when you think you've got it sussed you get caught out again ! I have a nasty scar on my thumb where I was a bit enthusiastic persuading a sledge hammer onto a new hickory handle about 20 years ago and got pinched ! 😬🤢😭 Farriers tools are great quality, but have you seen the prices, their hammers & pincers are scary pricey !
Ya got me crafterman…I’m so so impressed with that hole line up trick I was thinking get a diameter on the head then measure the difference in degrees from it..set the drill press table to that degree…I’d still be fooling with it…did you figure it out or did you read it somewhere…?? anyway fantastic video…one thing why not a bell shape at the end of the handle…🖖
Believe it or not I was pondering that little problem for a week solid when it came to me one night just before bed. I was pretty excited to try it out! So simple yet so effective! I’m sure I’m not the first person to think about it. 😃👍
Came out great 👍🏼 That wasn’t easy - I’ve always had an issue with hanging a new head on a hammer / or axe . . Great job on that one John < any tips on how to get it down ( the wood ) to the proper size Ike you did in a quicker way when you don’t have a lathe ? Thanks in advance
I’ve been restoring tools for about a year now, what primer should I be using? Currently I’m using rustoleum self etching primer and filler primer, both seem to work nice but I want my project to last. Someone told me I need to use the self etching primer, but most of my projects have already been at the wire wheel or sanded. Also, don’t you have to put a sealer over South etching primer. Basically what is the correct primer to use on old steel and iron tools? No rust so I don’t need rust converter primer. Thanks !
I like the drill press trick!
Using that pin was a brilliant way to align the drill bit! I would have never thought of that!!!
The hammer turned out perfectly. The drill press technique for aligning both holes was genius.
If there was ever a "Bob's your uncle" moment, it was when you got those holes to line up! Awesome job!
Green and yellow is very handsome. Still a hammer-holic at heart. Cheers Scout.

Thanks for the really great tip for drilling that hole accurately. I hadn't seen that trick before.
Gotcha 👍👍🔩🔩
The handle looks great! The repair looks like it came from the factory. I learned a lot from this tutorial. Thanks for sharing this.

Real nice job and great trick on the hole alignment. Beautiful hammer and handle.

I'm always learning something new great way to drill a crooked hole thanks
Great stuff John.. nice project! I really like that technique for lining up the hole 😃🙌 every days a school day 👍 cheers Rob
Gorgeous hammer. John you are the best. Just a delight to know that we get to see and spend time watching your content.
That was really something. I have never seen one of those hammers before and the process to put a handle on, wow. Nice looking altogether and finished!
What a challenge! Very well preformed, I would've had sleepless nights over that. I do want a Garland hammer now... Thank you!
Very enjoyable. It seemed like a quick, easy to watch episode today.
Brilliant Mate!!☻

I always like a nice new handle, great job John
That was amazing! Precision lathe work, neat drill press technique, and fantastic finish! Custom wedge worked like it was made for this handle. Thank you for the education!
That came out great! The color you added to the wood compliments the head colors.
Hi John. WOW!! Great video. Never have seen a hammer like that one. Great job on that one. Some tips also. You have a great day. Still to hot hear. 👍👍❤..
You did a fantastic job on that handle. That is a nice tip about the offset hole too. 👍👍🤓
Another fantastic video. My first time seeing that style of hammer. Great tip for drilling a hoe that is not perfectly straight.
Great video scout tricky little one came up fantastic as always god bless take care 🇳🇿🗽🇺🇸🪖45
What a great hammer! I love how you handle the challenges.
Beautiful job on hanging the hammer handle, that type of hammer is very versatile, have used them in the past, mostly with leather heads. Thanks for the video sir, another fun one.

Another very interesting and educational video! Thank You for sharing 👍🏻
Saco is about 15 minutes south of me.
Great job, never seen that style of hammer before. Love the drill press trick, great episode and thanks again!

Very interesting and I found the tip about aligning the holes very useful. Thanks
You are an artist. Great video. Thank you.
Great job! Worth the watch for the pin trick alone.
great job John 👍🔧🛠👌😁🇨🇦
Ditto on the drill press trick! Great idea!
Beautiful job. You make this project look so easy.
Nice job!
Great work.
Great video and interesting hammer! I live in Northern Maine and had never heard of this company or hammer. Beautiful looking handle on it now!
Beautiful job and know exactly what you mean about it not being easy I’ve been trying to do a hand axe and just gave up put it in the back of the garage maybe will start on it again next year 😂
Some delran pucks would look pretty sweet in ther. Great job SC!
That’s a nice hammer. Nice job on the handle.
Cool hammer, I like how the faces are easily replaceable.
I like my Thor soft face hammers but it's a chore to replace the faces.
Wonderful episode. Hammer handle looks great. :)
Now that was one really cool fix.!😮❤
Would of been good to see how you wedged it
I loved the job on that hammer, a top tip I'll remember that one, many thanks
That's a pretty cool drilling trick! 👍
Fantastic tip

Green & Gold!! It could easily be a Green Bay or a jets hammer.
Filed for future use,thanks John!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😎😎😎😎😎😎
I have never ever seen a hammer like that one. great tip on alighting the pin..satay safe...captjack

Fascinating!
That looks amazing. Great to see some lathe work (subtle request for more of that).
Have you ever tried turning off-centre - to get the oval handle shape?
Yes, most times turning off center is used for Tapers. Intermittent cuts are very tricky. 😃👍

That's a clever idea to make a offset drill hole Hammer looks great was that nos hammer head or did he restore a old one
I think Rich restored and hand painted the letters! He did a great job! 😃👍

I have some 15 minute looking handled hammers 👍 😁
😂. Me too! 😃👍

I don’t always use primer. Enamel paint is slow drying and very durable. I used to use shellac as my primer and it was fantastic! 😃👍
@@ScoutCrafter thanks!
Great job on the hammer John, but did you ever hang a handle that wasn't guilty? Lol
Love the John Deere green and yellow castings.
