  • "The Fantasie in C major, Op. 15 (D. 760), popularly known as the Wanderer Fantasy, is a four-movement fantasy for solo piano composed by Franz Schubert in 1822. It is widely considered Schubert's most technically demanding composition for the piano. Schubert himself said "the devil may play it," in reference to his own inability to do so properly." (Wikipedia)
This version includes Franz Liszt's alternate (ossia) passages and his version of the finale. The video shows both the original and ossia passages.
György Oravecz was born in Budapest in 1963 and began to play the piano at the age of eight. He graduated from the Franz Liszt Music Academy, where his teachers were István Lantos and Zoltán Kocsis. In 1985, he won the special Cziffra Foundation Prize at the Hungarian Radio Piano Competition. After this, he became known primarily as a Liszt specialist. He has performed in Austria, Brazil, France, Croatia, German, Italy, Canada and the United States. Zoltán Kocsis has talked about Oravecz as follows: "He is a true podium artist with great prospects, who on many occasions given clear proof of his virtuosic technical skill, his stylistic security and last but not least, the undoubted originality of his musical personality." (www.filharmonikusok.hu)
Unfortunately he only has a few recordings available, including Liszt's Totentanz. An audio+sheet music video has been made of that piece, which can be viewed here: • [Oravecz György] Liszt...

Most of the time Liszt makes things more difficult, but I feel like many of the passages he has simplified to great effect while maintaining the original intent.

I like some of Liszt's textural rewrites. It's efficient and it doesn't sound too much different from the original yet once one plays it, it is far more romantic in it's pianism

0:00 - 1. Allegro con fuoco ma non troppo (C major)
    5:24 - 2. Adagio (C# minor)
    11:42 - 3. Presto (A♭ major)
    15:49 - 4. Allegro (C major) (Liszt’s version of the finale)

Thank you! I recently acquired the sheet music so I had to hear a performance of it!

some of liszt's changes are improvements like 9:41 and 14:44 but i cannot agree with the change to the left hand in 16:52

I agree, 16:52 does sound a bit off or at least unnecessary, but were Liszt's pedal markings adhered to by (the fantastic) Oravecz I think we might have perceived that change differently. Without pedal Schubert's wonderful harmonies are somewhat obscured by the choppy bass - which might even enhance the power of that brilliant chord progression if played with pedal. But I am not sure, would need to hear it.

Well the last movement is basically Liszt's arrangement of it. It does stray further from the classical integrity of Schubert but I think it is interesting to say in its own right. It sounds very cool

Way easier than the original one 😂. Liszt was clever.

18:27 in the right hand here, are these supposed to be triplets with a rest at the first beat of each triplet?

    Liszt butchered the Wanderer.
