Directed and produced by Rob Marshall, “Mary Poppins Returns” also stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer and Julie Walters with Colin Firth and Meryl Streep. The film, which introduces three new Banks children, played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and newcomer Joel Dawson, also features Dick Van Dyke and Angela Lansbury. The film is set in 1930s depression-era London (the time period of the original novels) and is drawn from the wealth of material in PL Travers’ additional seven books. In the story, Michael (Whishaw) and Jane (Mortimer) are now grown up, with Michael, his three children and their housekeeper, Ellen (Walters), living on Cherry Tree Lane. After Michael suffers a personal loss, the enigmatic nanny Mary Poppins (Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Miranda), uses her unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Mary Poppins also introduces the children to a new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Streep). The film is produced by Marshall, John DeLuca and Marc Platt. The screenplay is by David Magee based on The Mary Poppins Stories by PL Travers with Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman writing all new songs and Shaiman composing an original score.

My nostalgia was hurting when she didn't come down using her umbrella. But I concede to that her coming in using the kite is much more poetic.

THAT ANIMATED PART IS FANTASTIC!!!!!!!
AND it is ALL hand drawn! Animators from the original film were brought out of retirement to work on it and to show the new CGI spoiled animators how it is done!

A wonderful film outside the music and songs which fell far short for a classic Disney movie for children. The lyrics were far too smart for young children, although entertaining. Has Disney forgotten their roots? The mark for a Disney film is to have the children humming the songs as they leave the cinema. This film failed that test... A Disney film is a children's film with music, not a musical for adults...

Nobody wrote the songs like the sherman brothers. They set our standards high. We are lucky we got these songs at all.

Not really a soprano, is she? La Andrews could still sing the thing an octave higher... and Shaiman and Wittman aren’t exactly Sherman and Sherman!
Spot on. No one was humming the songs as they were leaving the cinema. A mark of a true Disney film. Keep it simple for children...
The accents are terrible.
I just don't like her speaking voice. It's not near as sweet as Julie Andrews

Thé Mary Poppins character in thé Book acted more like Emily Blunts' character than Julie Andrews but both are exceptional roles for playing Mary Poppins.
I mentioned this ages ago when l first heard Emily Blunts ‘over English’ accent. Mary Poppins was never an aristocrat and Emily Blunt has a nice natural voice. I can only imagine Rob Marshall insisted on it but to me, as an Englishman, it sounds forced and unnatural.

They're not. Michael is widowed, Jane is helping him. "Father, Aunt Jane, come quick!" Families come in all sorts of arrangements.
Lin-Manuel’s accent is horrendous. It wouldnt bother me as much if I didnt know he is american. It just stands out like a sore thumb.
Dick Van Dyke has a terrible accent in Mary Poppins. It’s a tradition 😝
Many people find it charming because it seems like a parody, which it technically is. I also think its supposed to stand out against Mary Poppins especially.

I would say if he's supposed to be the new Bert, part of the character is the worst Cockney accent in the history of Cockney. If he had a good Cockney accent, that defeats the character. It's a precedent set by Dick Van Dyke.

Hey dum dum, it's supposed to be 1930s England, you know, a vastly majority white country so it wouldn't make sense to have a diverse cast. You cast a movie according to when it takes place, where it's set, and what the roles are, not inclusion and diversity checkboxes. Would you load a ton of Africans into a Bollywood film? Would you make half the cast Chinese in Titanic?

I think l have spotted a few mixed race minorities (and they would have been minority then) in the cast to keep the PC brigade happy?
