@@thelewis2898 That look on Black Dynamite's face at the end laid me out. I always liked the "I threw that sh*t before i entered the room!" boomerang gag. As with all of this movie: Delivery is key. Put this movie in the hands of Friedberg and Seltzer and they'd kill the humor.
The scene in the diner, where Black Dynamite and the other brothas uncover the whole Anaconda malt liquor conspiracy, is one of the greatest scenes of absurdist humor ever. That is some Monty Python level shit and it gets even more funny the more times you watch it.
The way the scene started was definitely absurd. But, if you look a little deeper, you can kind of connect the dots and follow along, making the scene both hilarious and somewhat logical. Black Dynamite just happened to tap into the Vulcan.
Seems like it's a sideways to the 1960s Batman show and the crazy non-sequiter logic Batman and Robin would use to decipher clues... though in this movie it goes on about 5 minutes longer than the typical Batman 'detectiving' scene.
The movie does lose its subtlety during the fight at the end but all through the rest of the movie, its aim is dead on and I agree with your praise of this movie. There are gags so subtle that many viewers miss it, like the flashback images in Vietnam being different from the main character's description of the scene. More people need to see this movie. I also appreciate you pointing out the trend of awful parody movies that somehow hooked young audiences and made them believe pop culture references, many of the times verbally underlining the references, sans humorous or clever writing were the high watermarks of movie parodies.
agreed. the movie loses it somewhat in the last 20 minutes or so but it did give us doctor wu's arm being chopped off by a boomerang and those 20 minutes alone are still better than any of those awful parody movies. I wish younger audiences knew more about Black Dynamite than those mainstream "films"
that's part of the parody, too, though, the over-the-top shift in silly action. that it feels different from the rest of the movie is also what makes it 'right,' even if it doesn't quite maintain the perfection up to that point. the last shot of him with the gun and women at his feet, though, is pure wonder. there's still enough there to make it amazing. the only shot that rather took me out of the movie was the helicopter exploding scene, it always looked way too modern to me. i agree, the parody becomes far more obvious, though, like the cheap sets.
@@motioninart The Kung Fu Island sequence is pretty great because it's basically a genre switch out of nowhere, that relies on stock footage and goes nowhere. The trope being the Big Lipped Alligator moment, and feeling so out of place is much of the point.

Black Dynamite is like the best of the early Mel Brooks spoofs. It combines surreal and incredible humor with a startlingly accurate recreation of the visual look and feel of what’s its parodying
agreed. personally, I think Mel Brooks doesn't even compare to this film and the only thing that comes close is Young Frankenstein which is more to do with Gene Wilder. Blazing Saddles could also be up there.
I love 70's movies. When I saw Black Dynomite I was catching every reference. One was from Grease, another was from Billy Jack. These folks really knew what they were doing.

I didn't know it was a parody movie until i introduced it to my family, my dad looked it up and was like "it's from 2009...". I genuinely thought it was just a really funny 70's flick.
Recently showed my friend Black Dynamite (as more people should watch this film) and he loved it. I think the last 20 minutes is absolutely over the top, but I think it's actually earned. Throughout the entire film, there's so many subtle nods and jokes you don't know would be intentional unless you've seen enough 70's schlock. So by the time everything goes off the rails in the finale, you're kinda already invested an in it for the ride. Also it gave us Nunchuck Kung-Fu Richard Nixon as the final boss and that will always be my favorite Nixon.
Black Dynamite is hands down the funniest movie of all time, and I really don't say that lightly. It's a genuine work of art and is deserving of preservation in the National Film Registry
