  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Requiem in D minor, K. 626, is one of his most renowned and enigmatic works, largely because it was left incomplete at the time of his death on December 5, 1791. The Requiem was commissioned by Count Franz von Walsegg, who intended to pass it off as his own composition in memory of his late wife. Mozart, already in poor health, was deeply superstitious and reportedly became convinced that he was writing the requiem for himself, hastening his deterioration.
The completion of the Requiem was overseen by Mozart's widow, Constanze, who enlisted the help of several of his students, notably Franz Xaver Süssmayr. Süssmayr completed the work based on Mozart's notes and sketches, although there is some scholarly debate about the extent of his contributions versus those of others, such as Joseph Eybler.
"Dies Irae" is one of the most striking and dramatic sections of Mozart's Requiem. The Latin text, which translates to "Day of Wrath," is part of the traditional sequence in the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass, describing the day of judgment.
Performed at the Silvertown Auditorium in Cape Town, South Africa, on Palm Sunday, 24 March 2024. Presented by the Cape Town Choir (CTC) and Cape Town Orchestra (CTO).

    Latin text:
    Dies irae, dies illa
    Solvet saeclum in favilla,
    teste David cum Sibylla.
    Quantus tremor est futurus,
    quando judex est venturus,
    cuncta stricte discussurus!
    English translation:
Day of wrath, day of anger
will dissolve the world in ashes,
as foretold by David and the Sibyl.
    Great trembling there will be
    when the Judge descends from
    heaven
    to examine all things closely.
