I thank you for this, I got ATS due to my grandfather being a trucker. I can't become a driver myself sadly wouldn't pass the physicals due to bad lower back and knees. But now I can make a custom truck in his memory.
Rotation of the image most definetly matters once coverted to the DDS file. If it is backwards then once moved into the game it will be backwards on the truck. This is such an excellent video!
Man, this tutorial was awesome. Thanks for taking the time to put this out there. Been wanting to do my own skins and this is the best I have seen so far. Again thanks.
Thanks Jay, I have been watching your video, on truck skins. I have followed along in my own paint net file & am making a trailer skin. Your precision use & demonstration of paint net , layers or levels and file structure is excellent.
Thanks so much for this video I finally made my first skin. It's just a trailer and only put my youtube logo on each side but that's the first time I've got it to work in game.
Just as a heads up folks. This was not mentioned in the video but you will NOT be able to access your custom painted truck until you are leveled up a lot (same for trailers). You can do just the day cab and paint that, but if you did the W900 that doesn't unlock for a while. I've already tested this Sorry newbie drivers. Unless you cheat and unlock everything you'll have to wait a while.
Thank you for the video. I haven't modded my truck paint in years and I forgot how it was. Plus it was a for Peterbilt Viper. I just did it for the 389. Thank you again!!! Super easy!!!

I was able to follow your directions. thank you for making this. my only issue is i want to skin mod trucks. please make a video showing how to add skins to mod trucks. i was able to skin the scot mod truck but was not able to figure out how to add the skin to that mod(yes, i know how to find it as it is a steam workshop mod). I then downloaded a seperate steam workshop skin mod for the scot truck, and added the skin i had made to that mod. it worked!
Awesome buddy glad you got it. Skinning mod trucks can be a bit tricky, it really depends on what files come with the truck. I can't explain it perfectly in text but essentially there are two different ways to do it. One way is to make your own skin from the template for the specific mod truck and over ride an existing paint job that came with the truck. The second way is to use a program called "ats/ets Studio" it can be finicky but does work. unfortunately does not work for ALL mod trucks . I plan to make more videos on the subject in the future. Thanks again for watchin!
First let me say ty for making this video, it really helped me out. That said, I have a problem getting the paint job skin I made to show up in the game. I made a skin for a friend for his Freightliner Cascadia, and although the skin shows in his Mod Folder and on the mod selection screen, the paint job does not show up when he is in the truck customaztion area, not sure what happened. I sent him this video and even he can not make the paint skin to show up. I would love to discuss this over Discord.
Hey buddy sorry I just saw this. One question I would have is does it work for you and not him or does it not work for either? I wonder if the template you used is for the exact same cascadia, there are many different versions of the truck and would need the correct template for that truck. Just a thought, let me know.

thank you for the tutorial. a backup of the original file would be great I think. I'm brand new in ATS. If I have enough money to buy my 1st truck, I will try this here. :) sub
So the 1st truck is done. thank you again @angry . but it seems not to work in multiplay right? tested it with one friend. he has exactly my folder in his mod folder. if he play alone, he also can use it. any idea? or is it really just in singleplay possible? thank you guys.
Thank you for the in depth and step-by-step video. This helped me to create my own design in the game. I look forward to watching a future video about designing your own trailer. If we are goig to design our own trailer, do we have to pull the "EXAMPLE" folder out of the game, create the custom skin and put the folder back in?
I like your truck colors, I am using the same colors on my truck and am trying to make my frame the same green that you use with a black cab. Can you make a video on how to color the chassis? I am using vipers truck in the steam workshop
When you use mods from the steam workshop you can't edit those files and make your own skins. You have to download the mod from a website so you can access the files. I use to skin the viper pete non stop! In order to paint the frame the template to the truck has to have the frame in it. Yes I can make a video on how to skin it but it's a little more complicated to get it into game. But I will think about it for the future. Thanks for commenting
This helped immensely to be able to skin my own truck as a new player. Now on to the more difficult question. How do I get the game to recognize multiple skins for the same truck? I obviously have to change something somewhere, but I can't for the life of me figure out what.
I really wanted this to work for me. For some reason though, even though it showed in the mod manager, I still couldn't use find it in the paint options. I even tried it on two different trucks. :(
you can only have one skin active at a time for the same truck with the same cab size. you will need to make extra copies of the file and make your paint jobs in different copies then install the one you want to use
When you are resizing hold "shift" so the image goes larger or smaller but stays in proportion. If the clarity of the image is an issue, you can resize the entire image but going to "image" on the top left . there you can resize it all by pixel or inches. Probably will be some trial and error there, I can't really say what's a good pixle size.
This was very helpful. I was just wondering if you are playing multiplayer in a convoy will they see your custom skin or do you have to do something special to get that to work?
How'd u get this 2 work am I supposed to extract the file or something it's just not working the way he showed I'm getting a error at saving Can u please help

Hi Jay, this is an excellent tutorial for SCS trucks, please tell me will this work on modded trucks as well, what I was wanting to do is create a skin for the Haterbilt 389v2?
Thanks for the hard work and putting together this folder, I had no issues when creating my custom template for 2 trucks and 1 trailer. It works great when I put the folder I created in my mods folder, but when I pack it into a mod in steams workshop I get only pink and white blocks for the paint job. Even on trucks that I did nothing on and it should be the lines on the template as the paint job there also pink and white blocks. So I packed just the folder and did not change anything no lines on the template just pink and white blocks. the tag in the paint area at the dealer is showing up along with price. I made custom tags all is good there. Im new to ATS but not new to modding and was wondering if you have had or seen this issue before?
If you only mod one truck and have to save the entire folder in the mod folder, can you still go back to the example folder and mod the other trucks and save? Will it just over write the existing files? Also can you paint the truck more than one color? Thanks again for the help
yes it will over write the file but as long as your painting different trucks then it will keep them how you made them. yes you can paint them different colors just paint each area whivever color you would like
Angry J. Gaming, what font is that I see at time stamp 41:11 that you are creating for the doors or sleeper? The reason why is if I get my copy of the game for Christmas, I want to use a font that resembles the older generation. I know that in the 1960s, Sears had what is now called the "Georgia" font that they used on their trailers. And I wonder what fonts does the game have that represents the generations of the 1950s or early 1960s.
Hey Mr. AJG. I'm curious if you can do a video on how to do a skin with Doms templates. I've tried to follow your video as close as i can and still can't get it to show up in game. I think the folder is missing something. Like it's missing a modesk.
followed every thing too the letter but still won't load into the game file comes up in mod manager i activate it but when i go to truck shop and click on the paint tab skin not showing up in the options
Very in depth video. Thank you so much. I am having one issue though. After copying my pdn over to the dds template and trying to save I get a message saying access is denied. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Ya that’s a tricky one I’ve had it happen on a couple different occasions and it’s a pain to fix. I don’t really have a true fix but one thing you can try is, download the template for the truck you want. Copy the file and paste them into a new folder on your desktop and now open the template and skin your truck. See if that helps.
Thank u a lot for the video I’ve watched several of your videos. Only trouble I’m having is the templates show as a png. And I click on it and customize the template to how I want it and it still shows png I’m not understanding how to get it as a dds
It’s been awhile so I’m going off memory but when your ready to save. Click file “save as” and where it says .png use the drop arrow and select .dds. I believe that’s what you’re looking for.
one skin at a time. My advice, copy the original "definition file" multiple times. create a skin in each one and then you can just swap out the definition file. but you will need to keep those files in separate folders, NOT on your desktop or in the same folder. if you put two of them in the same folder or in game or on your desktop because it's named the same it will just over write one of them and make them the same.
hey j can you make a video doing a skin on the How to skin Freightliner_Classic_XL_V3 or any other custom truck mods please i followed your video an it but when i try the same method on the Freightliner_Classic_XL_V3 it didn't work
If you reopen the truck file, go to the paint job .dds file. When you open that paint job does it show up as the paint job your created or is the stock paint job?
I've been trying to skin my w900 and for the life of me all im getting is a white truck with all the lines, nothing ive created. I finally got one to work on a pete last night. I did notice there are two kenworth folders so im not sure if thats why its not working. I am using the 900sleeper though in the kenworth folder.
@@angryjgaming I have a "kenworth" folder with "900sleep" ive been trying to do it on with no luck. Then i have a "kenworthw900" folder with many different options which is the only one i can get to show up on the cab. BUT it is also taking the logos and randomly putting them on stuff like fuel tanks and such that make no sense. Any ideas?
I did all the steps you said to do and when i get in the game it shows the lines of the template on the truck will not show logos or anything could you help me?
i did everything you said and it wont show up in my mods list even when i try and use it outside of the file pack for the template its self it wont work idk whats going on
I doubt you'll see this being so old but when I try to save the dds file it says I can't due to it being set to read only ? Is there a way around this?
This worked for me but now have a different issue. The files show up as a dds file and when trying to let my buddy use the mod so he has the same truck it doesn't work for him. His mods show up as scs files and these files are dds files. Is there a way to switch file types
THANK YOU FOR YOU INFORMATION. I BUILT A SKIN & PUT IN THE GAME, NOW ITS ALL PINK TRUCK. I LOOKED AT THE VERSION ITS AT 1.19 & IM UPDATED TO 1.50. HOW DO I CHANGE IT TO 1.50. IT TOOK ME ABOUT 5 HOURS TO MAKE THE SKIN & INSTALL IN GAME. IM NEW TO ALL THIS
This probably a long shot but I just got the game and did everything like you said but when I went to go save it, it says access denied. Any suggestions
Every time I export the file as a .dds it makes it longer/wider/bigger, so I end up with a space on one side of my trailer design. Any idea why this is happening?
I have a question. I have 10 trucks in my stable. 5 International LT’s and 5 Freightliner Cascadia’s. How can I skin all 10 trucks without them colliding together?
You could copy the file 10 times but you will never see your AI trucks going down the road so in my opion it would be pointless to have 10 different skinned trucks all at once when you can only drive one
@@angryjgaming let me ask you this. I own my own company in the game and I’m trying to get all my trucks the same company name. Is there a way to do it without screwing up my paint job?
@@dodginthis Only use a mod truck or or skin as your personal truck. Sell it when you are done driving it. If you hire drivers and buy trucks , make sure they are stock SCS trucks with stock SCS skins, engines and transmissions.
It’s not letting me open the file but the example.zip isn’t yellow for me it’s white Edit don’t click the link I don’t know why it’s there Edit 2 I fixed one problem but now I don’t have a app to open it with Edit 3 ok I fixed every thing but the semi only has lines on it so it’s not showing the decal Edit 4 I fixed it and now it’s looking great Edit 5 is there a way to have two paint jobs cause at the time I can only have one so I’ve just been switching them back and forth Edit 6 but if you can’t have more then two in one file how do you make another file Edit 7 can you make a video on how to upload mods to the steam workshop Edit 8 I figured a way to make it were you have the stripe but you can still paint the truck in game
4 times I have went step by step and then A friend went step by step we still can not get it to save in example file . I am running windows 10 , can you help me.
You will need to save them separately. So you can copy the original file as many times as you want. Then make different skins, but you can't have more then one skin FOR THE SAME TRUCK in one file. you can have skins for different trucks just not the same truck.

@@angryjgaming okay i understand, thanks for the advice
hey j can you make a video doing a skin on the How to skin Freightliner_Classic_XL_V3 or any other custom truck mods please i followed your video an it but when i try the same method on the Freightliner_Classic_XL_V3 it didn't work
when i open the truck file from example file it just has a bunch of letters on the screen no images of the truck like in the video
right click on the file, then select view file
Hi, I followed this and saved it as a dx5 dds but even though I have activated it in mods I cannot choose it as a skin/pibtjon for the trucks, why ?
Same! You ever figure it out?
If you reopen the truck file, go to the paint job .dds file. When you open that paint job does it show up as the paint job your created or is the stock paint job?
I've been trying to skin my w900 and for the life of me all im getting is a white truck with all the lines, nothing ive created. I finally got one to work on a pete last night. I did notice there are two kenworth folders so im not sure if thats why its not working. I am using the 900sleeper though in the kenworth folder.
Hey buddy, the Kenworth folder has different sleeper sizes are you using the template for the sleeper your wanting ?
@@angryjgaming I have a "kenworth" folder with "900sleep" ive been trying to do it on with no luck. Then i have a "kenworthw900" folder with many different options which is the only one i can get to show up on the cab. BUT it is also taking the logos and randomly putting them on stuff like fuel tanks and such that make no sense. Any ideas?
I did all the steps you said to do and when i get in the game it shows the lines of the template on the truck will not show logos or anything could you help me?
I done everything as you show. I put mod in. It's never there in truck dealer. I tried everything.
i did everything you said and it wont show up in my mods list even when i try and use it outside of the file pack for the template its self it wont work idk whats going on
I doubt you'll see this being so old but when I try to save the dds file it says I can't due to it being set to read only ? Is there a way around this?
what do i do if i want to make multiple skins for 1 truck?
This worked for me but now have a different issue. The files show up as a dds file and when trying to let my buddy use the mod so he has the same truck it doesn't work for him. His mods show up as scs files and these files are dds files. Is there a way to switch file types
do mind that you have to do it this way in order to show up correctly ingame! i tryd with modstudio2....a disaster
IM NEW TO ALL THIS
hello, when doing truck skins it shouldnt matter what version we are on but maybe they have updated the templates i will take a look.
@@angryjgaming thanks for the reply
Mine wont let me save as a DDS. Do i need any extra plugins or anything? TIA
This probably a long shot but I just got the game and did everything like you said but when I went to go save it, it says access denied. Any suggestions
Create a new folder on your desktop, copy all files in the folder you’re working with. Save those files in the new folder you created and try again.
what if the new one opens as a PGN?
Every time I export the file as a .dds it makes it longer/wider/bigger, so I end up with a space on one side of my trailer design. Any idea why this is happening?
I keep getting the template background paintjob instead of what I made. What did I miss?
It’s not letting me open the file but the example.zip isn’t yellow for me it’s white
Edit don’t click the link I don’t know why it’s there
Edit 2 I fixed one problem but now I don’t have a app to open it with
Edit 3 ok I fixed every thing but the semi only has lines on it so it’s not showing the decal
Edit 4 I fixed it and now it’s looking great
Edit 5 is there a way to have two paint jobs cause at the time I can only have one so I’ve just been switching them back and forth
Edit 6 but if you can’t have more then two in one file how do you make another file
Edit 7 can you make a video on how to upload mods to the steam workshop
Edit 8 I figured a way to make it were you have the stripe but you can still paint the truck in game
alright everything is working , unfortunately the skin not lining up on truck tho?
Thank you this tutorial really helped me
Glad to hear that!
4 times I have went step by step and then A friend went step by step we still can not get it to save in example file . I am running windows 10 , can you help me.
So what do I do if I want to add more than one skim for the same truck or trailer
You will need to save them separately. So you can copy the original file as many times as you want. Then make different skins, but you can't have more then one skin FOR THE SAME TRUCK in one file. you can have skins for different trucks just not the same truck.
