As a rabid FSU fan this game was definitely bittersweet. As hard as it is for me to admit to this day, UF was the best team in the country that year. They were extremely fortunate to get the rematch and that OSU upset Arizona St. in the Rose Bowl that year so they needed some help but so did we in 1993 after the Notre Dame loss. As painful as the rematch in NOLA was to watch, I take comfort to this day that we took away their perfect season. The sad thing is that the rivalry may never get back to this peak matchup. The 1990's was the golden age of college football in the state of Florida. Man, do I miss games like this. What an epic matchup!!!
You couldn't of said it any better ! Now teams like Alabama end up with my Florida players than either of the Florida schools it seems as far as 5 Star elite talent imo
I think your sentiments are spot on. To this day, even with that national title, this loss still burns for UF fans -- a perfect season would have meant a lot.

Amazing thing about the gator offense was that they put up crazy numbers that year with a weak offensive line, by this point only one preseason starter was still playing(Donnie Young) injury bug bit the o-line hard that year.
Jackson was the best to have ever done it. I loved watching a game he was covering. He made it seem magical. Unfortunately, FSU, Florida, and Miami are no longer the programs they were in the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s. Why? Look no further than Alabama.

The game that woke the old ball coach up, Nebraska the year before all over the QB and FSU changed up the D for this season using the Nebraska scheme from a year earlier and had great success all year. I remember the Nebraska Florida game at half so many experts wondering if the old ball coach would put Danny in the shotgun to give him more time but they had never worked on it not part of the Fun and Gun but after this game in the rematch they did and Florida leading FSU in the sugar bowl 24-20 in the 3rd FSU dropped a sure INT that look like a pick 6 and after that the blow out. I am a huge FSU fan and remember this like yesterday and was dreading the rematch knowing how good Florida was but it still was a fun season and this brings back some great memories. GO NOLES!!!
Yeah, and if the end zone was open at that end, it would have traveled all the way to Thomasville, Ga. It was kicked from FSU's 32 yard line and the wind carried it into the end zone which made it a 68-yard punt. It doesn't matter if the ball went past the goal line by an inch or by 50 yards, it's still a touchback. Three of the punts that FSU's current punter Alex Mastromanno made against LSU this year all landed inside the 5 yard line: those were BETTER punts than this one.
As FSU QB's go, Thad Busby (1996-1997) was the least proficient QB they had during the dynasty era (1987-2000) despite having a 19-2 record as a starter (however, the array of talent surrounding him and on the defense is what got him the 19 wins). The other QB's during that era were Danny McManus (1985-1987) Chip Ferguson (1985-1986, 1988) Peter Tom Willis (1986, 1988-1989) Brad Johnson (1990-1991) Casey Weldon (1990-1991) Charlie Ward (1992-1993) Danny Kanell (1993-1995) Dan Kendra (1996) and Chris Weinke (1998-2000). Conversely, UF had one of their two best QB's in the last half century playing in this game (Wuerful & Tebow).
Lol in these old games before all the rules changed you really see how hard they try to smash the QB. FSU was late-hitting Wuerfell all game but at 1:48:27 Boulware lowers his helmet and literally goes for a killshot. Thank god he missed!
They were mostly NOT late at all. The UF offensive line couldn't block em. If you get hit less than a sec after you throw it's not late. Spurrier cried ab it, and in the national championship they threw a ridiculous amount of flags against FSU that they normally wouldn't on any team giving the gators many opportunities to win. Refs robbed FSU in the 96' championship.
I remember saying to my buddies from FLA that we’re gonna win 20-16 and Wuerffel is going to get a beating and they all laughed at me, as soon as the game ended I called all of them and screamed at the top of my lungs “HOW YA LIKE ME NOW, YOU LAUGHING NOW!” They all hung up on me.
