Comparing a Bishop Wand Tattoo Machine to a $40 Burner.

  • Well, it’s happening. The time has come to compare some of the most expensive tattoo machines to the least expensive out there. How do they compare?
The reality is - the manufacture of the machines isn’t very different. Beyond where the sourced parts are obtained, each tattoo machine works exactly the same but may have a different lifetime due to quality. This comparison should go to illustrate something about the equipment we use in the industry - artists place additional value on the things they rely on, utilizing value as a buffer between them, their ego, and outside critique. Machine manufacturers have utilized this tactic to inflate prices while allowing a swap meet style pawning of machines to hold the brunt of poor tattoos being made.
Rather than blaming yourself, you can blame the machine when things go wrong (or needles, or pigments…)
Why be hard on yourself and spend $1000? You can swap machines for less than a hundred and blame something more disposable so you aren’t breaking the bank!
Pros- The bishop has a nice cam.
Cons- the entire machine setups are too alike to not knock them both for being cheaply made. Rotary machines are often not built, they are assembled, so having a high introductory price (and a repair cost of ~$300) the Bishop falls hard into the “CON” pile.
We give the bishop and expensive 4 out of 10. It's hard to get over the markup on a machine that really doesn’t offer much above a cheap disposable machine.
The Bomb gets a 4.5 out of 10 because it’s garbage, but it’s cheap garbage.

The exact motor isn’t available as it’s special order from the manufacturer. I emailed and checked with the distributor directly. There is comparable motors of the same grade/quality available on the website.

There is a machine like this from ambition called hello thats excactlynthe same size as wand liner. If you change the cam with 5 mm one?Does theone fit to the other?

Possibly. Depends on the axle size. I haven’t done it but if you can give it a go, do

I don't have the 5 mm stroke cam....if you have it and can compare it it would be very useful...cause I will have either to make one or buy one..

@@AlexandrosNikolakis yeah. They are like 5 bucks from bishop or other companies. We’ve done a couple swaps at the shop and they seem to be interchangeable across most brands

Hi, would it make a difference if the cam bar was straight instead of with a bend? I think I heard somebody say the bend will act like a sort of give-system. Not that familiar with metallurgic. The only reason I could come up for the bend in the bar is that you can place the motor in centre of the machine, width wise and therefore better weight distribution? I saw machines now with a straight bar and I was wondering if that would be better or not and why?

I could see that dude. It makes sense and tbh having all of those bends is far less efficient if you think about it. It must be there to add variability in the operation so larger groupings can be used. I wonder if the bend directly correlates with grouping efficiency? Like, if you do a couple extra bends with a less rigid machine will a mag operated “softer” as grouping sizes increase? Interesting thought train🤘🤘
What do you think happens if you offset the machine and operate with a straight bar and like a 3rd?

    • @DavidToken
      @DavidToken 8 місяців тому

The extra bends wouldn’t that be like with the drive bar with an inkjekta machine? @@BetterTattooing With your last question : no idea. Wouldn’t that be like the same as a direct drive with with needle bar?

@DavidToken hmmmm. I don’t know. I’ll have to think about that lol!! Thanks for the brain teaser to start my afternoon off with lol
Direct drive… maybe, but only insofar as the delayed return of the grouping due to realignment of the stresses (my guess?) all those bends gotta straighten out but that also has to be timed with the extension of the grouping. If those are out of whack it would probably act like a direct drive as the grouping will stay extended past its intended timeframe. Maybe you discovered why hang occurs in pushrod systems? Goddamn👍

      Basically, yeah
I mean, you can buy the same motor/cam combo and drop it into a cheap machine and have a “bishop packer”….

Man a lot of ppl get confused between the wand packer, shader and liner. Black(5.0mm liner), gold(4.2mm packer) and grey(3.5mm shader) 🤙

I have no idea 🤷‍♂️ pulling it apart I wonder if there is any other difference past cams or if it’s just color coded for folks like me who don’t study brands and packaging.
It’s actually pretty smart if folks sell them this way but still have a hard time understating why there is a choice of specific cams for specific jobs. I’d rather see cam settings assigned for various sections of the body as they are more applicable for different elasticities of skin based on location (or even age)
