    The theory that Molly asks the question about the platform for Harry's benefit is cute, but over-complicates the matter. She asks the question because she's a mother with excitable children. She knows where the platform is of course, and she knows her kids (especially Ginny) are excited to get there. And so she allows them (again, especially Ginny) to prove their knowledge and so join in on the Hogwarts experience (an experience Ginny will need another year to join). Her question is one of inclusion, just not for Harry. It's a fun test, like asking a small child, "What shape is this?" Yes, you know it's an octagon, but they're excited to demonstrate their knowledge. I love this moment in the book, and it's a pet peeve of mine whenever this theory comes up and over-complicates this simple matter lol.

      I don’t see why it couldn’t be both. Molly sees Harry struggling and provided an opportunity for both her children and him to learn something useful.
      I agree that she did what she did for her own children but included Harry in it too as the motherly figure she is.
      It also could’ve been just for her kids and Harry happened to be near them but I don’t see the problem with both being true. They aren’t controversial and in line with her character.

      It also help reassure her that the children know it themselves for future times when they will be making the trip unsupervised, or as chaperones for their younger siblings when they are older (which we see exactly that happen in the later books/films). It's a Parenting 101 trick commonly used by people with multiple children. Harry was just fortunate to arrive at the same time as the Weasleys to get some collateral benefit from it.

      ^ This
      I also get annoyed when people ask questions as to the true reason this scene happened.
      You don't need to over complicate things by adding more layers.
      Molly was just being motherly to her own (direct) children is explanation enough.
      Sure, she and all of her children should already know about platform 9¾, but that's the thing, you don't constantly talk about the things you already know, you just bring them up when they are relevant.
      Molly was just doing a motherly check with her own kids, said in a loud voice because they were at a train station, and if any lost or unsure nearby first years overheard this conversation is just a happy accident.
      There doesn't need to be an ulterior motive for something good that happens to the protagonist.

    Why is it people always jumps to that conclusion with Molly asking about the platform number? It's pretty clear to anyone that she asked that question in order for her children, specifically Ginny but maybe also Ron, to feel included, since Ron had never gone there before, and Ginny was too young. Have you have had kids? If you ask them questions they know they are very eager to answer, especially if it's about something they are interested in. Molly simply asked the question so that Ginny wouldn't feel left out, it's called being a parent.

      Well no. If you actually want to get into it, she asked her kids because it’s a book, and the author needed a way to include the weasly’s in a subtle way before Harry gets on the platform. Your thought of the story is just as valid as another, because none of this actually happened, people just like to insert their own little ideas into the story.

    The Molly and platform one is just..over-complicating things. Teaching by asking questions is very common in parents and teachers. Parent: "What do we do when crossing the road?" Kid: "We look both ways and walk across. Parent: "That's right."
    I don't get why that is so difficult to understand. This theory takes away from Molly's character as a warm and competent mother, and makes her into a secret agent sent by Dumbledore. She wasn't even in the original OoP, so it doesn't fit her at all. She is perfect the way she is. A nurturing and loving yet somewhat stressed mom who only shows her Fangs when her kids are in danger.

    Not really any reason for the Marauder's Map to stop working after Lupin dies. Death of the creator doesn't instantly mean the artifacts they create suddenly lose their power.
    The locket, tiara, the Sorting Hat, Dumbledore's deluminator, etc etc etc. The series is stuffed full of numerous magical items from large to small, and relatively innocuous to insanely powerful that keep on doing what they do just fine for centuries after the death of their makers.
    Also, we know for fact that there are still several people around after Lupin died that know the key phrases (George, Harry, Ron, and likely Hermione and Ginny). Especially since the twins had been using the thing since BEFORE Lupin arrived.
    * Again Lupin hadn't arrived yet when it was implied they'd had and been using the map for at least a year
    * James was dead
    * Sirrius was still in Azgaband
    * And Peter was still masquerading as Scabbers and wouldn't have wanted anyone to really know about the map since it could have (and as we read/saw, it did in fact) reveal that he was still alive and in Hogwarts.
    So someone other than the Marauders had to have figured out how it works for it to have been confiscated in the first place and for them to have learned how it works as well, since they clearly didn't get that info from any of the Marauders directly. There's really nothing to say that the map wouldn't keep on working just fine so long as someone knew or learned what the key phrases were until either the map itself or Hogwarts itself were destroyed.

    • @LordTKII
      @LordTKII 2 місяці тому +4

      I believe the map would still work, as you say.
      When Lupin confronts Harry about the map, he says, he knew for a fact that it had been confiscated years ago, suggesting that one of the marauders got caught with it, I suspect this was on purpose, as they wanted the map to stay in the school to be passed on to the next mischief makers, after they graduated. I don't think anyone had used the map before Fred and George snatched it from Filch's office a few years later.

      Unless maybe the Marauder’s Map was created by all 4 of the friends and only once all 4 were dead would the map lose its magic? Lupin was the last of the four to die so it might have ended when his life did? 🤷

    • @LordTKII
      @LordTKII Місяць тому +2

      @@Blakmage3 The Sorting Hat was also enchanted by all four Hogwarts founders, they're surely dead and it still works, and I don't think the enchantments on the castle had to be renewed after they passed, especially since some of the magic they used seems to be forgotten to the generations.

    • @OverworkedITGuy
      @OverworkedITGuy Місяць тому +1

      @@Blakmage3 yeah, but again there's not really anything to indicate death of the wizard causes magical items they create to suddenly stop working. Beyond curses, which aren't the same as magical items, there's not really a precedent for that to be the case. Magical items large to small, powerful to minor, are scattered throughout the series. Made by numerous individuals and groups that keep on working perfectly fine centuries and centuries after the death of the original creators.
      Even more so there's an argument that the map being voluntarily given to a direct blood descendent of one of the original creators (Harry) means even less reason for it to just stop working. Especially when the 2nd time it was given to Harry by one of it's creators (Lupin).
      There are way more arguments for it to keep on keeping on, than for it to just decide to randomly stop working when we've been repeatedly shown throughout the series that magical items and artifacts keep working after the death of their creator(s).

    Disagree with the Umbridge theory. She probably was quietly prejudiced muggleborns before the forbidden Forrest incident. She was just showing her true colors in book 7 because it was now acceptable to do so, not because hermione tricked her. Also, she enjoys positions of authority and being able to punish people.

  • @craxd1
    @craxd1 2 місяці тому +7

    Something tells me that it was Rookwood that wrote the DOM memo about how muggle-borns supposedly obtained their magic.
    No, I think Umbridge despised muggle-borns beforehand, because she was a half-blood hiding as a pureblood. She despised her own brother, who was a squib. No, she did her best to distance herself from muggles, even hiding her father away.
    I doubt that Crookshanks was the Potter's cat, as it would have been old when Hermione bought him. Plus, Sirius never recognized the cat as the one from the Potters, only that it was a smart cat.
    Crookshanks was supposedly part Kneazle, and nobody knows how long they live, but a regular cat would have been at least 12-13 years old when Hermione bought it, if it was the Potters. House cats live from 12-18 years, so Crookshanks would have been very old, and then add on six more years to that where the story ends.

    I have heard the cat theory before and it doesn't hold water. Firstly, Sirius says in the book that it took him some time to explain to Crookshank what he, Sirius , wanted. If the cat had belonged to Lily and James then Sirius and Lupin would have recognized it right away. And as they were telling Harry so much in that book and in future books it seems likely that someone would have told HP the cat belonged to his parents.
    The Umbridge theory was new to me but, again, I don't think it fits. Deloris would have taken ANY job with the new order just to keep herself safe and in power. She cared about her own well-being. And she hated half breeds before that. She had written laws that kept werewolves from being hired. I think Deloris Umbridge was a nasty monster BEFORE she went into the forest. She may have been traumatized but she was prejudiced already. AND she would have said she hated muggle borns because that's what the Ministry (under Voldemort) was pushing.

    My thoughts on these:
    1) Highly possible, even very likely as it sounds completely in-character for Moody to do this. He knows as no other that one better not go lightly into war and he has given more than most in the fight against Dark Wizards. Harry was a bit too eagerly to go to war.
    2) Plausible, but I don't think this is the case, personally I'm more inclined to believe that R.J. Lupin is in fact Lupin's grandfather and that Lupin is using it as a hand-me-down. We know that hand-me-downs in Harry Potter is often used to signal poverty so it isn't unlikely that this was the case here also.
    3) Highly possible, even very likely as this too sounds in-character for Molly Weasley.
    4) Possible, the only thing going against it is Sirius not recognizing the cat as Lily's cat but we don't know how old the cat was when Lily had them but twelve years have passed since and it is entirely possible that the cat in question was a more so a kitten or an otherwise very young cat. For all we know someone gave Lily a kitten as a birthing gift, which make them about a year when Sirius would have seen them for the last time. Also, Sirius doesn't seem the type to really pay attention to Lily's cat as he was also more a friend to James and the only reason why he became friends with Lily was because she was dating and later married his best pal.
    5) Highly possible, how many travellers do we know in this setting that carry fantastic beasts on their person on the regular, who would visit Hogwarts and who might find it a good idea to drop something off like that with Hagrid. Though, of that latter I'm not sure. Hagrid said Aragog that he was given Aragog by a traveler when he was an egg but is it really unlikely that a mischievious young Hagrid couldn't help himself and stole the egg... But whatever is the case, it was likely that Newt was that traveller carrying the egg in the first place.
    6) I thought it was confirmed that James Sirius Potter stole the map, so if did no longer work, what is the point of stealing it...
    7) Possible: while Umbridge was never a pleasant person, it isn't that hard to imagine that her character didn't improve after being attacked by centaurs by a ruse created by a Muggleborn. If there were already pre-existing prejudices against muggleborns, and that is quite likely given her track record and family history, that stunt of Hermione probably have worsened.

    1) I like this theory, and I think it fits what little we learn of Moody’s character in the series.
    2) I like this theory also and it would explain why Remus kept using the battered old suitcase even after getting a job and would have been able to buy a new one at any time during his time as a professor at Hogwarts. But I can also see James adding professor on the briefcase as a joke.
    3) How would Molly know Harry would be alone on the platform? She didn't know yet how awful the Dursleys were, Molly asking what the platform was, was just JKR giving Harry a way to meet the Weasleys and a way to learn how to get onto the platform. Though I doing like what a few commenters on here suggested, Molly was just making sure her children were paying attention and making sure Ginny and Ron knew the answer.
    4) I have heard this theory a few times, and though it's a cute theory, I don't see how it's possible. For one, Crockshanks didn't recognize who Sirius and Pettigrew were, he recognized they weren't really animals and Sirius says it took him a while to get Crockshanks to trust him, if he knew Sirius, I wouldn't think it would take him a while to get Crockshanks to trust him, plus Sirius talks about Crockshanks as if he never meant him before, then there is the fact, either Sirius or Remus would have mentioned if the cat once belonged to Lily.
    5)Interesting theory, not sure if Newt would have given someone such a dangerous creature, especially in a castle full of children.
    6) I've heard somewhere, don't remember where, but JKR has said James stole the map from Harry right before he started Hogwarts, why would he do that if the map didn't work anymore?
    7)Umbridge was already shown hating werewolves, and what she called half-breeds, so, it's highly likely she hated muggle-borns before being tricked by Hermione. Umbridge was just a hateful person.

    For theory 3, SuperCarlinBrothers has an alternate idea: what if Dumbledore had told her what to say?
    4: I know this one- from the August '81 letter!
    5: Makes sense!
    6: Interesting! And in the order they appear on the map, the bearer of each name outlived exactly the ones stated afterward!

    You know, though it is tempting to read things into all these innocuous occurrences, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar and a scene is just a scene. For instance, the letters on Lupin's case could just as easily be pealing because he's tried to stick the letters onto an old and battered surface without proper preparation. This may cause them to peal. And as for Cruickshanks, I find this ridiculous. It seems perfectly plausible to me that any creature, magical or otherwise, would know an animagus for what it is: a human and not a true animal. As for Umbridge, it was Hermione who first set her off by asking awkward questions in class. Umbridge does not like to be challenged and it was a muggleborn who first challenged her. I was far more concerned that she retained her position after relinquishing her Hogwarts posts than about her prejudices which, to me, were obvious.

    Re: Umbridge's escalating ugliness. I can't be sure but I think it had more to with a lack of meaningful consequences after Year 5. She never reallly faced trial. Then in yeqr 7, the conditions were right for her to be more openly cruel, instead of thinly masking it as a professor at Hogwarts. The Ministry enabled her hate even more than in Year 5. Thoughts?

    I have another idea about why Lupin's suitcase had the title of "Professor" on it already. If James Potter had given it to him as a gift, either James or Remus might have put the letters there to make it easier for him to get any kind of job. Just knowing that someone is a professor can elevate one's credentials, and the power of suggestion could make someone more likely to trust Lupin.

    I am pretty sure the map keeps on working after the death of all the marauders. There are numerous examples of permanent magic in HP universe. Hogwarts itself has enchantments holding since the time of the founders, multiple magical artifact throughout the series, Goblin magic, Gubraithian fire, the permanent sticking charms used on the posters in Sirius' bedroom, the talking portraits who definitely had personalities of their own. If a 16 year old Sirius can perform permanent magic to stick posters in his room then the magic must not be that rare or difficult or exclusively dark (as suggested by mischievous and dangerous artifacts).

    This isn’t a Theory:
    Umbridge got off easy being sent to Azkaban after the Dementors were removed. At least Voldemort faced justice (in the books more-so because he didn’t disappear in a cloud of ash but was merely a dead body with a broken soul in the afterlife).
    Voldemort wanted a messed up world and would gladly manipulate people and children to achieve that goal. Umbridge did the same except tortured Children. Voldemort was a murderer and approved/did torture his enemies, but she tortured children and literally scarred them.
    She deserves the dementor’s kiss or at least as much twisted happiness that could be taken away from her as possible.

    I don’t buy the idea that when Remus died so did the map. It was a far too advanced bit of charm craft with far too many interlocking elements to have simply been a basic enchantment that fails at the death of the caster.
    I would put it in the same category as the Sorting Hat. The hat belonged to Godric Gryffindor, but was enchanted by all four founders.
    Same idea. Multiple people were involved in the enchantment of the map.

    They plainly state their belief that only when wizards reproduce, is a wizard born: No two muggles can create a non-muggle - Yet if you claim to be a wizard born to muggle parents, it must be the case that you stole the magic, when in fact the most obvious conclusion should be by their own definitions, the child being a half-blood with an unknown wizard parent

    She was finally allowed to, by law, push her views to the extreme.
    Don't think it had anything to do with Hermione.
    As for Molly on the platform, that sounds perfectly fine. But the idea that "it doesn't make sense otherwise" is a, well, ignorant claim.

Molly's is rowling letting harry know where to go but also can be explained by asking ginny where to go as a test or confirmation to know where to go, either way who cares why. Lupins brief case has no meaning to look into. I like the aragon one, never thought about it tho. The umbridge one is her true colors show the more you know her. When you first meet a person evil or not you don't know the extent until you know more about them. She showed extreme prejudice already and the more acceptable it became she didn't have to hide it. Crookshanks doesn't have enough evidence to prove or disprove. And when did the marauders map stop working? Is that a cursed child thing?

    1. Moody - wouldn’t exactly call that a theory… that’s very far reaching for a theory and not consequential to the story.
    2. Lupin - the suitcase would have just been tacky and battered due to Lupins inability to find work and his struggle with money.
    3. Molly - I think she was just flustered due to the amount of kids being around her. She always seems to be in a “differ” or a little stressed out with majority of her children around.
    4. Crookshanks - that’s a very far reaching theory. Even Sirius himself just said he’s a very smart cat for his kind.
    5. Traveler - probably one of the more plausible of the theories. Because Newt would have taken a liking to Hagrid and would have known he would had been safe with Hagrid.
    6. Marauders - interesting theory! But magic can be indefinite. Look at the spells that still linger at hogwarts. And old magic that permeates throughout the wizarding world.
    7. Umbridge - I believe that she was always prejudice towards the pure bloods. But let’s not forget she was also wearing a Horcrux causing her negativity to increase 10 fold.
    Interesting theories. One or two seem reasonably plausible the others are just too far reaching.

That theory is just imposing our irl logic on a fantasy world where such logic isn't present at all.

    I have a hard time seeing Molly so innocently. I suspect she was on the muggle side for the sole purpose of finding Harry and winning--at minimum--a rich and politically powerful friend for her children. Especially Ron, who is unlikely to do well.
    Given Molly never approved of the Twins success because it wasn't proper, I'd assume she's very likely more interested in politics.
    While its possible they always come 'the muggle way' to save money. Ron's lie to Harry that he couldn't find a free compartment doesn't help shine the family in a good light.
    And at least the book's description of the Molly-Auther relationship is not one I find very healthy ether. Especially when taken in light of Molly's constant badgering of the Twins and Bill about 'respectability.'
    I don't think Molly was meant to be anything but a loving mother. But I find her way to suspicious, to go along with that particular view of her.

    Lupin's briefcase, Moody's explanation over the photograph, Crookshanks being the Potter's pet cat and Aragog's egg are so inconsequential that it simply doesn't matter. Those are perfectly plausible theories, but also just that, theories. Molly's behaviour with her children is better explained as just good parenting. But the marauder's map losing its magic when Lupin died is questionable at best, as it would have lost at least part of it with the deaths of James, Sirius and Wormtail. Because that didn't happen, it's difficult to agree to what happened with the map after the Battle of Hogwarts because we don't have any information about it. And that theory about Umbridge is just illogical. The centaurs, even though not precisely tame, are very far from evil beasts who would torture a witch just for the fun of it. Worst case scenario, they gave her a good scare and left her lost in the middle of the forbidden forest. Best case, they just grabbed her and released her on the other side, basically banishing her from the place. That's not enough for a PTSD based hatred. It's much more likely that being hated by pretty much everyone and having a locket which messes with your head around her neck for months, made her radicalize. Oh, yeah, and then there's the fact that she's a prejudiced half-blood with a squib brother who, by becoming the head of muggle-affairs, skipped being questioned about her heritage.
