Carnival of Light is so underrated. As for seeing them in person, I remember years ago Mark was doing solo shows in the Knitting Factory in NYC. I was waiting outside the venue when Mark was hanging out on the sidewalk, chatting it up. I was so afraid to approach him and say hi!
Hardly anyone off-context could really understand the 1994 vibe. I was teenager that summer, getting ready for 11th grade, on holidays we've traveled to US with my father (NY), twas huge, hot and totally head over heels experience, Europe is small, Petersburg Russia is tiny in comparison to NY scale. It was summer of grunge on MTV, of metal zines and expensive cassettes in music stores, but very affordable t's, jeans and boots everywhere.
being an early ride fan from the ep days, i have to say carnival was my favorite. it was overshadowed by the oasis debut and wrongly so. a shoegaze record? no, obviously, but an excellent record. i had the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with mark in miami and he felt the record was uneven. i disagree, i love it.
Just noticed this interview. It is more evident than ever that Andy Bell was the one who drove the idea for the separate credit for the songs because Mark is just nodding along, barely getting a word in edgewise. Mark should have hit that arrogant dork with his beer can. It's also funny that, after all of the songwriting talk, they played and released a cover song as the first single. The best song off of Carnival of Light was written by their drummer.
Very under-rated band! I get annoyed the way history has been rewritten to give the impression that before Oasis came along with their simplistic mainstream-fodder, British guitar music was a lifeless wilderness. The early 09s 'Indie' era was much better than the mid 90s 'Britpop' era! Even supposed Britpop bands like Blur, Suede and Pulp did much more interesting work earlier in the 90s.

Been in love for many days with Natural Grace back in the summer of 1994. I was a teenager in love and she is still the best thing i've ever had.

I like how awkward things got when they were asked why they had taken separate credits

mviku1 Go on the site, "Riff station" and search "Ride - How does it feel to feel" I'm CERTAIN it will come up.
The best song on Carnival of Light is “From Time to Time”. That should have been a single. I believe that was written by Mark and Steve :)
great. how does it feel on a lawn..

Andy comes over a bit of a pratt here. Much prefer him in interviews nowadays. Mark always came over well.
