Well that was thrilling - NOT! I just hope he doesn't leave his standard filter in there for another 7 years!!! The BMC Filter are supposed to be taken out, cleaned a re-oiled every 25000 kms or every year. Just because they say it lasts a lifetime doesn't mean you can fit it and just forget about it! Being clogged will increase the pressure on the Filter and make it get extremely hot and eventually deform.... Really, some people...

I clean it every 10 months and re- oiled and that the results.Now I have kn filter
I have exactly the same problem with BMC filter in my Colt Ralliart. Now, I purchase k&n filter.
Maybe I should do the same

I don't have experience on OEM filters.But if you ask me between bmc and k&n, I choose k&n
