The story behind that is Ray saw the 1999 black and white movie "Trailer Park Boys" at the Atlantic Film Festival in September of 1999 at the Oxford Theatre.
And so Ray approached Clattenburg the very next day with the idea to use it as a shopping around pilot to the Cable Networks (though never aired as the pilot).
They both had a meeting in Toronto with the Comedy Network by early December but were turned down.
Before they got on the plane back to Halifax they called Showcase on a whim and had gotten a meeting immediately. And the rest was history.
They had the deal with Showcase by early December 1999.
However, Showcase had two problems.
They weren't comfortable with the description of Bubbles in an outline.
And wanted them to hire a more experienced producer.
So they decided to film "Cart Boy" in Jan of 2000 to show it to the suits to convince them a character like Bubbles would be a great decision (not 1995).
And they hired their friend Mike Volpe (who I went to high school with) who had 2 projects under his belt.
And that's how Ray, Clattenburg and Volpe became the owners of the franchise of the original franchise and the only producers to make money from the DVDs.
(also the 99 TPB movie is not to be confused with the B&W 1998 Short "One Last Shot" where they played different characters who were gay).
Oh man. I cried.... I'm 51. I have 4 cats ...I consider myself rugged, full on man alpha. But this got me. I love kitties women liquor and ws hores and RUSH.
Thank god Lahey didn’t exist in this universe 😂
wow, Jason is just post-showtime Julian.
This is like an alternate universe of the boys
My handsome Julian!
I am the liquor
This is bizzzaaaarrrrrrrrrrre.
Thank you for adding this! I've been a long time TPB fan and I guess not as hard core as I thought because I never saw this until tonight 😅
The ending they threw the cart down and waved lmaooo
They still are Ricky and Julian to me no matter what and poor bubbles they was so mean to him back then he even lived in a house instead of a shed
You are doing God's work. I thank you.
God, they look young, but still, they look cool.
Indeed, so young, pure and naive.
Did not know this existed, thank you.
Actually made in early 2000 after they got the deal with Showcase and showed this to the suits to convince the suits a character like Bubbles would be a good idea, not 95. Imdb incorrect as usual.
TPB is brilliant it’s crazy to see this is we’re it started from.
the end made me cry >
I didn’t even realize this was trailer park boys related till I saw bubbles
Where you boy's been hidin this one from me? NICE! ✌💙
Watching this is like watching a multiverse thing... Its a lot brainthinking thing 😂 Just baked right now
Hey man Bubbles, fellow Pictou County person and Kitty lover.
Only thing I miss about not having Netflix.. its this show
Pirate it
Incredible short!
and this is where it all started...
I don't wanna toss the first stone ... I was drunk too
Vince the Pinch! Pince?
Or Bubbles. A female cat named Bubbles.
You could sneak this in the first few episodes in tpb and not many would notice the fact they were filmed 4 years apart
That's because it was only 7 months apart. Not 4 years.
Cart Boy was never 1995. Imdb is wrong. You can even see 1999 car models.
After the deal with Showcase went through on December 23rd 1999 Showcase still had an issue with the Bubbles character in the outline.
So Clattenburg and the boys made it really quickly in Jan of 2000. And passed it into Showcase to convince them a character like Bubbles would be a good idea and pretended to them he made it years ago.
***Clattenburg talks about it in the Oral History of TPB****Google it.
****Also their editor Jeremy Harty goes into it in more detail on an audio podcast. He said Clattenburg lied to them and told them it was 1995 to make Showcase think the character had more of a history to it other than Smith pulling out the character at parties in the 90s (which he had called Darren so in honor of that Clattenburg called him Darren in Cart Boy but named the cat Bubbles instead).
Love the vid...this reminds me of trailer park boys when bubbles takes the shopping carts and fix them and sells them back at the malls
I'm crying it's too touching
Thought in the series bubbles said they grew up together in Sunnyvale
His name isn't Bubbles in this though. His cat's name is Bubbles though.
And JP is not called Julien.
Though JP's last name is Peterson in this.
No wonder Mrs Peterson thought Julian looked like her grandson...🤔
1995 I think this was made.
