    : : : Assembly of the Blockboard Sandwich : : :
    What is blockboard? It's basically an inexpensive material used in the 1960's to make countertops in the UK. (As far as I could work out) Generally made from outside layers of hardwood plywood, and inner cores of a softwood. Brian May used this as the main body section of his homemade guitar, the Red Special. I am attempting to mimic his build with as many pieces that are true to the original as possible. Let's see how it all turns out!
    One of my aims in documenting my build is to try to illustrate the crazy Rubik's cube that is the internal structure of the Red Special. For a long time, I only had a vague idea of what was going on in there... and now that I know more, I plan to try and animate it building itself from the inside out. That's just the kind of thing I do to amuse myself.
    As I stated in an earlier post, I'm trying to stay faithful to the original, but sometimes I have to go with what is close to hand... and in some cases, that feels the most like "faithful" to me. So, European Oak is used for the inserts, Baltic Birch hardwood plywood and Alder are used to make the blockboard. This video shows the first step of my actual construction, which is the big stop motion glue up, complete with authentic sound effects. Enjoy!
    Big thanks to Doug Short for our seemingly unending collaboration on this build. Check out his build and lots more info here: dsgb.net

    Hi Luke, I see you use Gorilla Glue, I see others using Titebond as they say it's stronger? Would you recommend Gorilla glue?

    • @Lukeyourself
      @Lukeyourself  3 роки тому

      I can't say I absolutely recommend it over Titebond. I was working with a friend who had conducted his own tests and decided to go with it after his experience, but I've since used Titebond on portions of my build. Titebond has the ability to be removed where the Gorilla glue stays solid. The only way to remove it is sanding or a chisel, effectively. I wouldn't hesitate to use Titebond is what I'm saying.

      @@Lukeyourself Thanks Luke, I have already glued the top body with Gorilla, I will probably use Titebond for the veneer and fingerboard, I doubt the manufacturer of the original blockboard took as much thought into the glue they used,

    Hi - I made my 1st guitar in 1961 and would you believe it, my body was blockboard supplied by my uncle who was a manger in a furniture factory. Bockboard was readily available in those days and had a laminated core of pine slats faced both sides with 1/8" birch ply. Mine was a full 1 3/4" thick in one piece rather than Brians two layers. I used Mahogany for my neck and painted the top surface black with Japlac a common paint of the time. I didn't realise at the age of eleven that the fingerboards were Ebony. So many things were similar to Brians build but nine years later I was building Les Paul copies.

      Very cool. I hope you still have that 1st guitar! What a time piece that would be.

    Very nice job ! A question ... Is the wood used by glued panels rather than in a single piece to be as much as possible like the original construction?

    • @Lukeyourself
      @Lukeyourself  4 роки тому +2

      The original construction was block board... which is made up of narrow pieces of pine or other soft wood glued up and sandwiched between 2 layers of 1/8" hardwood plywood....which you can buy in certain countries, but not here, so I made my own. But yes, the original used 2 layers of block board screwed together... which I show in a later video.

    Where did you buy the wood for the blockboard?

      Just a lumber yard, but you can similar at any typical, big hardware store that sells wood.

    What are the measurements for the wood? More specifically width and thickness.

      That's a very loaded question. There are at least a few schools of thought here, and some are still being debated. I went with what was common knowledge at the time of my build, but I think it has evolved since then.
      That said, I made each of my layers of blockboard 3/4" thick, with 1/8" plywood on the top and bottom, leaving the inner cores just under 1/2" to leave room for glue. I made my panels of plywood 16" across.
      If you want to know more, check out the Red Special Forum on FB and search for "laminboard" or "block board" to read more of the debate.
