I bought a USB- rechargable muffler type scarf with heated pockets on the ends of the scarf. I could tuck the ends into my coat to add to core warmth, but I plan to use the scarf ends as hand warmers. I like the flexibility of choice, but you might also benefit from pocket hand warmers. Definitely look for rechargable even though it costs more. Since you're out in a field for hours, dedicate a USB charger so you can go longer. Put your regular gloves in your warmed pockets while you are handling the cold, wet soil and they will feel like heaven after you brush your hands off. I don't know if a heated vest would give you hot spots that would make you sweat and cause worse chilling with the damp. You might be better focusing on moisture wicking layers and a lower hip length with loft for warmth and a waterproof outer shell. Zips at the hem will give you more room to sit in your car or ride your bike. The E bike could help you avoid sweating too. Wind and waterproof head gear would help a great deal too. I have never investigated heated socks, but that may be another key area. You would have to hand wash socks and allow them to dry-- a 2-day process?
Another fascinating session! The lead weight was truly amazing. I enjoy hearing you give this history of each piece, but most of all, I love your integrity. In these days of ‘fake news’, and people trying to put others down, it’s reassuring to know that there are decent folks about. The stories that these fields reveal never fails to amaze me. Thank you again John for taking us along!
Glad you enjoyed it Chris and thanks for the kind words!! Much appreciated and I’m glad you’re enjoying the channel. Best wishes and have a great weekend
I arrive at 3:45 for my job at NASA. I sleep for 2 hours with a battery powered, set of boots, gloves, vest, and blanket and 2 regular blankets. Toasty warm. We live in awesome times. I always have batteries plugged in. LOL. Great videos. Kids and wife think I am a nerd. Maybe. I live in the same state as the awesome Hoover Boys. (don't know them ~ yet)
As Norman Wisdom said " There are 3 things that happen to you when you get old , one you start forgetting stuff and I can't remember the other two " 😉🇨🇦
John, John, John..you need a post site arrival checklist as well...😂 Please be safe, enjoy your holidays and give Jura a scratch behind the ear for me.
John, I am a year-round golfer, more so than detecting, and I just bought a heated "waistcoat." It does the job well, but only for about 4-1/2 hours on the medium setting. Loving your videos from Maryland.
Hi John, buy 3 thin lightweight thermal jumpers and take one off if you get too warm. Wear thermal long johns and wear thin (pack lite) very light type water proof over trousers over jeans or track suit bottoms. Wear a vest and warm shirt under your jumpers. Wear a lightweight waterproof jacket with pack away hood (Decathalon Outdoor/Hunting department I think. Wear thick thermal boot socks in short Wellies. Wear a Scarf and thick neck warmer (Snood). And thick waterproof beanie hat. That works for me. Wind proof, waterproof, warm and dry. Oh and nice warm detecting gloves. Over ear headphones keep your ears warm.
Ok so now you also need a list in your van to remind you to take everything!! 😂😂 Thanks for getting out in the cold weather to film it and seeing you find that huge weight was fantastic. Looks more like a food product weight to me.
Greetings from the Pacific Northwest Coast of America. You asked about heated vests. I have a Gerbing 7 volt & I use it for skiing, avoiding the cold on the ski lift ride. BRRRR! Yes, very much recommended. They can go for up to 10 hours. Extra battery packs can keep you warm all day.
Some lovely finds john. I was contacted by Garrett on the 11th to say I had won the Vaughan Garrett international finds for November with my 1890 victoria half sovereign i won a ace apex detector z lynk headphones z lynk pinpointer and some Garrett goodies its couldn't believe it 😅
You're doing well John, I thought you wouldn't be out much once winter came. Love all the vids you have posted. The Black Watch badge is most likely a collar badge or what we called, 'Collar Dogs'. A horizontally fitted brass split pin would would have held it in place. Thanks🍻
Visit Canada in the winter and you’ll get the best tips ex. a down filled vest, your toque ought to be wool with a lining, lined trousers with hard shell for the wind, layers, merino wool top and bottom long underwear. Heated socks and gloves are great but you gotta be self reliant if batteries fail. Thermos of hot coffee but it’s gotta be good coffee, and an energy dense snack to fuel your furnace. You got this.
I have a heated vest, use it when I play golf and metal detecting. Charge lasts about 3.5 hours on the highest setting and it does keep me warm in the colder weather.
We live in Australia and it can get cold although it's currently 40 degrees C!! My husband bought me a heated vest 3 years ago and I love it!! Definitely get yourself one 😊
Great dig John. Amazing weight! I may have mentioned before that my Father was a Captain in the Black Watch during WW11. He served in France & Africa. Cheers, John.
Looks a very promising field John. Would be great if that weight proves to be medieval but it could possibly be a winding weight from an early wall or floor mounted clock ??
The military badge looks like a sweetheart brooch, replicas of cap badges given by soldiers to their girlfriends or wives. The brooch pin fitting's not normally seen on issue cap badges, and Scottish cap badges are usually much bigger. Also, it most closely resembles The Royal Scots cap badge, a regiment even older than the Black Watch, dating to 1633. It's probably WW1 although they were around in WW2 as well.
Heated bodywarmers are great, I invested in 2 battery packs aswell, mine uses 1 on med setting in about 4 hrs, there are lots of different heat pad areas so think of what you need to keep warm. Do the research to suit you. ❤
Sorry, re your finds, I’ve got nothing! But I must say how fantastic it was to see so much of the countryside around your permission this time. Of course you must be protective of the farmers/land owners who’ve given you the run of their properties, but on this occasion it was a real treat to get a bit more physical perspective of the terrain in which your finds were lost or, in the case of all the junk, thrown away. I really enjoyed this one! Cheers.
I invested in a battery operated waist coat last winter, well worth it, keeps you nice and toastie. Mine heats up behind your back, across your shoulders, and the front!
Another youtuber very kindly gave me a USB charged battery heated gilet last year, he had been given it to review and never wore it again, and I asked him if he thought it would help me to stay warm, in a comment to his video because I needed a way of keeping warmer while we are out detecting and I am sitting in my powerchair because I am disabled, and I can honestly say it was a game changer and I have since bought a pair of heated fleece lined trousers as well and I will be using them again tomorrow for the first time this year. All the best Jon and Wendy in Derbyshire.
I’m still waiting for the new video with the deus hoard detector 😮💨. My dad was going to buy it and I said don’t bother. Your be digging all day for nothing 🤣
Thanks Alex. Yeah, the weather hasn’t been kind and it’s taking me a long time to get to grips with but I’ll be producing something soon as long as the weather improves
John, if you’re interested in warm clothes that aren’t bulky, look into Oros. Their insulation is related to the same material that NASA used to make the insulating tiles on the outside of the Space Shuttle. Thin and very warm!
Count as a Mistake when its in the White Whale! 😱 Maybe Scotland will Meet DK in the WM Qualification! Prefer actually EIRE if DK can beat Portugal in Nations League 🙄🤔
Im just guessing but did you get rained out of using that monster of a detector? or did you just go to the wrong field to use it and came up buggered all?
You're clearly the best qualified detectorist there is, often dropping finds and forgetting to pay attention, like the people who lost what you find. You're part of the family 🤫

Heated west are fantastic!!! Last one I bought was £14 (you need a standard usb battery pack as well) keeps me warm when detecting, mechanic... fewer layers and a nice warm feeling!! Get one!

Amazing. Great information. I think I’m sold on it, just need to do some research now! Many thanks

I have 2 Blackwatch tartan kilts. The first concert I attended was in about 1960, in Kansas City, Missouri. It was the Blackwatch Pipe and Drums.
Wonderful! Amazing. Well done 👏
Good to see you having a crack and scoring some good finds. Gidday from Australia.

I've a nice collection of ear tags too 🤣👍
That's not like you to forget something 😂. Love the loom weight 👍🏻
Hahaha 🤪 story of my life
I think when you reach 48k followers, you should get yourself a theme song with plenty of bagpipes! 😊 I’d love it!
Great find w the weight. Almost certainly a loom weight!
Looks a very promising field John. Would be great if that weight proves to be medieval but it could possibly be a winding weight from an early wall or floor mounted clock ??
Interesting Chris!! Great info, didn’t think of that, but spoiler alert there’s another epic video coming soon!! Have a great weekend

Thanks for the info Shaun. Definitely seems like a sound investment! Especially if it means I’m not so bulky with the clothes
John. Might i suggest a checklist? Headphones seem an integral part of your preferred hobby. It's painful to see you struggle so.😂
Thanks Dominic. I don’t know, the excitement gets to me and then my brain doesn’t engage!
Sorry, re your finds, I’ve got nothing! But I must say how fantastic it was to see so much of the countryside around your permission this time. A real mixed bag bro.! I hope the weight & the cap badge clean up well.!! Great stuff.!! Bless 👍
You’d just forget the battery for the vest mate! Much love from America 🇺🇸
I invested in a battery operated waist coat last winter, well worth it, keeps you nice and toastie. Mine heats up behind your back, across your shoulders, and the front!
Our lollypop Lady here in Comrie has one of those vests. She rates them.
Fantastic, thanks Matthew
Was there an X scratched into the wide face of that weight? Great post. Thanks
I’ll go back and double check! Many thanks

Thanks Jon and Wendy. Great info!! Definitely looking into one. Thanks so much and happy hunting
John when you hand the token back it may be enough for a shot of whisky or a big mug of tea😊.❤❤❤❤❤
The headless "soldier" could be Charles I circa 1649.
If there are no calibration numbers on the lead weight, it may be a counterbalance, possibly a double-hung window weight
Aha! Great info Eileen. Spoiler alert, great find from the same field coming up soon!! Might be an indicator
16:40 headless thompson gunner...Warren Zevon
I bought one for my son he likes it
Fantastic! I’m definitely interested
I love the beeps lose the headphones ❤
Much better without headphones 😂
Hi John, did the Black Watch badge have a date at the bottom right of it? My eyes were seeing 192?
I’m still waiting for the new video with the deus hoard detector 😮💨. My dad was going to buy it and I said don’t bother. Your be digging all day for nothing 🤣
Thanks Alex. Yeah, the weather hasn’t been kind and it’s taking me a long time to get to grips with but I’ll be producing something soon as long as the weather improves
@ looks good but it’s only good if your on the right ground. it looks like hard work, a lot of digging 🤣😮💨
I have a heated coat, definitely worth the investment.
I love your hat! Please may i ask where you got it? Thank you.
John, if you’re interested in warm clothes that aren’t bulky, look into Oros. Their insulation is related to the same material that NASA used to make the insulating tiles on the outside of the Space Shuttle. Thin and very warm!
my dad was in the black watch
Good dig John, beautiful sky and nice finds. You have some great suggestions on how to keep warm in the comments 🥶!
So, now you need two lists, one list of stuff you put INTO the van. Then another list upon arrival for things to take OUT of the van. 🤷♂️😂😇
Well worth the weight - see what I did there? 😂
Here in Arkansas USA, we call buckled coins...TACOed because that is what they resemble. lal
I was wondering if that was a window or clock weight.
Great suggestions Deirdre ! Spoiler alert 🚨 there’s another epic find coming soon! Same field which might be an indicator
@thescottishdetectorist Can't wait!
The lead weight look as though it was used in a large Sash Window?
Could the big weight be for an old window counterbalance..
John could that Lead be for a Sash window
👍🏻
What about a battery operated car John?
I like the sound of that!! 🚗 💨
Count as a Mistake when its in the
White Whale! 😱 Maybe Scotland will
Meet DK in the WM Qualification!
Prefer actually EIRE if DK can beat
Portugal in Nations League 🙄🤔
I don't mind hearing the machine!
Clock weight, probably not.
Guess you need two check off lists - 1 for leaving the house and 1 for leaving the car 🤣🤦♂
🤤 Lead. It’s the tastiest metal.
I've got battery heated 🧦, they heat up your wellies a treat.
Wow 😮 I never knew such a thing existed! Many thanks
Im just guessing but did you get rained out of using that monster of a detector? or did you just go to the wrong field to use it and came up buggered all?

Well said Paul, he’s definitely the more knowledgeable member of the family.
@sniddley 😏
More knowledgeable / got good ground to detect on.
My father called it a lazy wind ,didn’t go round you just through you
Are you aware that there over 30 minutes of AD's added to this video?
A pendulum for a grandfather clock ??
Forgot to add good luck❤❤❤❤
Do you know why soldiers don't have heads? Victorian children were shooting cannons playing war
