- Опубліковано 3 сер 2024
- A four-way edition comparison of Will Eisner's classic A Contract with God, featuring the Baronet first edition limited hardcover (1978), the W. W. Norton paperback edition (2006), the W. W. Norton hardcover omnibus of the Contract with God trilogy, and the Centennial Edition (2017), also from Norton's Will Eisner Library.
Features a close look at all four editions, and comparisons of the major similarities and differences between these four presentations of the groundbreaking 'graphic novel' by Will Eisner.
The first edition hardcover was limited to 1500 and is signed and numbered by Eisner, the Norton reprints feature new illustrations and prefaces, the trilogy omnibus is the closest to the original's colour palette, and the Centennial Edition features newly re-scanned pages as well as a new introduction by Scott McCloud.

So helpful! Was just looking to buy this book and hoped eh, perhaps i’ll find one video on each version and compare myself. But here you are to the rescue haha. The only video on youtube (and probably the entire internet) to do a full comparison on this one. Great job man, keep it up!
Thank you so much, I'm so glad it helped! 😁
This is the video that made me subscribe to For the love of comics. :)
Great review. Thanks a lot my friend.
Thank you; so glad you enjoyed it!
Love your videos, you have introduced me to numerous fascinating graphic novels which really push the boundaries of the medium, thank you. Do you know where can I buy the first edition version of a contract with god? After watching this video I dont think I could stand reading the other versions
Apologies, for some reason I seem to have missed this! I bought my copy off ebay, I don't know of any other way to reasonably get one's hands on a copy, especially outside the USA. The huge and expensive Curators Edition is now out though, that may be the second best thing (or even better, some may say, thanks to its size?)
Beautiful presentation of his masterful works!
Many thanks!
Hello great video and thank you for doing these series, seems we have very similar taste and i am always happy to learn more about your favouire comic books and series!
Maybe you can help me with this one - I can not find Contract with god in the Czech language, but in your video (from 8:16) in the Centennial edition seems to be example of what seems to be a Czech translation - the panel on right bottom.
Is there any more detail on the editions and translations, and perhaps who is the publisher/name of the book please? Thank you - Jan
Thank you so much for the kind words and I am thrilled that you are enjoying these videos - It's exactly comments like these that serve as the biggest impetus to make them!
You are right - the second panel on that page is indeed from a Czech translation, but unfortunately there is no other mention of the edition/publisher, or any other detail. It could well have been licensed to a Czech publisher and is no longer in print, but my initial investigation (Page 1 of Google results!) isn't yielding anything more concrete. Sorry to not be of more help, but I'll definitely keep an eye out for any information I can find!
Thank you for making this very informative video. I was about to buy the Centennial Edition, but I'd like the coloring to be closer to what Eisner intended, so I'll seek out the trilogy. Thanks!
So glad you enjoyed the video and it helped (as you may suspect, I agree with the decision! 😁)
Great video! Helped me a lot
Glad you liked it! There’s a Curator’s Edition our now, featuring original et purchases, but out of my current budget, I’m afraid!
@@ftloc No kidding! I think it's outside everyone else's price range too because I can't find a review video for it, lol.
@@gioravalico550 Haha!
Well, I started saving up for it, but there's always something else breaking the piggy bank, isn't there?
Hi! Thanks for the video. One question that I have that wasn’t clear in the video - does the centennial edition include the two stories that come after A Contract with God like the first hardcover or is it just the first story?
James Barrera Hi and thanks for watching! A Contract with God is a story cycle of four stories, including the title story, so all editions of the book contain those four stories which are A Contract with God, the Street Singer, the Super, and Cookalein. So, yes, the Centennial Edition has all those stories, all of them do. If you’d like, check out our introductory What is ‘A Contract with God’? video for a bit more detail on the stories.
Thanks! The Contract with God Trilogy has more stories though, correct?
James Barrera Yes the trilogy Omnibus contains two more books, A Life Force and Dropsie Avenue, also available as separate editions.
Great video. I immediatly ordered the Contract with God trilogy hardcover because of all included books and more sephia tone colours. Would not have known that without watching your video. I bought the same HC with dustjacket as in the video. Newer versions, as the one in the link in the description, have another dustjacket. Would they still have the same sephia tone colours inside as far as you know?
Thanks so much, and glad I could help with the decision! 😊 I'm not sure if the more sepia paper is maintained for the new edition/ impressions with the different cover, but I would guess so. I'll try and find out!
@@ftloc Hi, thank you for this terrific video. It got me hooked on your channel and also very interested in Will Eisner. Did you ever find out if the new Norton hardback trilogy is also sepia-tinted?
Hey Joslyn , did you receive the HC of the trilogy? And if so, what is the answer to your question? I Wendy.. I Wanda.. I wonder... (; should I order it or should I search for the version from the video? (I prefer the sephia)
Also it's seems that there are 16 pages less (544 vs 528) in the newer version, do you know what is the difference?
Thanks in advance and I hope you enjoy reading the book,
Adi
@@adi71023 Hey, I just received a copy of the new HC. It does indeed have the darker sepia-toned pages. It's a really beautiful book, highly recommended.
@@jack9864 Thank you very much for the info (:
this was a fantastic book, and idea, as it was more of a perfect marriage of text and images. This felt to me the way to experiment with graphic story telling and a way to move farther into the future of publishing such stories.
Yes, the approach to the format -the whole packaging - is perhaps Eisner's most enduring contribution, many would say!
Interesting video! As an original art lover I can recommend the Curator's Edition from Dark Horse (published may 2018).
Glad you liked the video! And yes, I'm saving up for the curator's edition! 😁
I'm saving up for the Baronet edition...
I have a little prelim of a page of New York www.2dgalleries.com/art/new-york-pencil-p14-88670
Touche! The Baronet is a great little volume and it is is fun to see 'Poorhouse Press' getting a credit, that being Eisner basically self-publishing the book through Baronet. And that pencils page is terrific!
Does the paperback have all the stories in it as the hardcover?
Yes it does, all four stories!
@@ftloc thank you for the quick reply even though this video was uploaded 3 years ago. You are a very rare gem 💎
@@tonymathew22 Aw thank you! I love chatting about comics and chatting with viewers! 😁
Go for the ultimate version the Dark Horse Curator Edition!
Don't think I haven't thought about it 😋! If it had ever been available at a sale/discounted price I would have jumped at it!
@@ftloc haha I recently saw it on Amazon marketplace for $125 Canadian so I got it!
I’m interested in reading will Eisner, and a contract with God looks really interesting. I like things that have a Christian meaning to it, because if u look hard enough u can find The Lord in anything.
I’d be interested in hearing what you think of it, if you get to read it. I’m not a Christian myself, and the characters in this story would be primarily Jewish, but I don’t think that matters; like most great literature, it’s more interested in humans and humanity than divinity, which makes for more complex storytelling.
For the Love of Comics , if u ever wanted to know how u can follow Christ, I would be more than happy to share Him with u 🙂. And I’ll let u know what I think if I get the chance to read it
While I do appreciate the offer, I'm of the age and experience where - for better or worse - I feel happy and contented with my beliefs and approaches in life, and I simply wish similar peace and happiness to all humans. The religions of art and empathy are more than enough to guide me for what remains of my existence, with no malice towards anyone who may choose to believe differently, as long as they bear no malice to others. =)
