3:28- Promise/Catradora theme. I really enjoy keeping track of this theme throughout the different episodes and seasons during pivotal Catradora moments!
Yes same! I noticed it so many times and I loved how it sounded and felt so I went on a huge hunt for its origin 😂😂
this is my favourite version of the promise theme - it's the saddest, but it's the most potent & powerful, I feel
the choir/violin note from 3:44 - 3:49 is normally where the promise theme fades into silence/other music, but here, some extra notes come in on the piano*, that are very echoey and for me emphasise that now that portal-catra is gone, adora feels truly alone. The slow echoey-ness I also feel is really matches well adora's emotion onscreen, as she is frozen and still for a moment despite being on the edge of the cliff where catra fell, and has tears prick her eyes but she doesn't cry yet.
*specifically the first part of the main melody for the promise theme, which to me signifies that catradora's theme has been interrupted, as the latter 75% of it is cut off, to reflect catra's apparent death in this corrupted reality
and then at 3:54 the violin strings swing or lurch in after the piano trails off, which coincides with adora now crying openly, and now moving to turn & run from where catra fell. Adora falls to the ground and is wracked with sobbing, unable to run again, and the way the violin is brought back in I feel sounds like her movement, of lurching forward.
{warning: the following paragraph contains me attempting to explain why I like this version of the promise theme using the classical music theory of the western european canon, of which I am not trained or well versed, only loosely familiar - approach with caution!}
The melody of this section of violin again mirrors the main promise melody, but this time instead of being only 2 of the 8 bars/sections of the theme, it's 2/8ths plus another long note that is held for a third bar/section, but doesn't leave the theme feeling resolved. The catradora promise theme in general feels mournful, but usually it feels resolved at the end of the 8 bars/sections, and then it repeats with a build up of instruments/choir voices and more layers of complexity to then be stripped away to a choir/violin holding that final note, which feels tense and unresolved, but appropriately so. The note I'm referring to happens from 3:44 - 3:49 normally, but here it happens and then twice the theme is begun, but not finished, and then the drama/tension note is reintroduced. To me this gives off a vibe of "where on earth do we go from here?!?!" which is also how adora is feeling in this moment. The tension is so much stronger at the end of this version compared to the other versions of the promise theme that I thought for ages that they were adding to the end of the normal theme a catradora-promise-theme-but-its-in-a-minor-key or something, but I now think it's the same theme as normal, just cut off both times before the tension can be resolved in bar 8 of the theme.
In the other versions of the theme - when catra has rejected her apology in s1e11 and when catra sacrifices herself to give the Best Friend Squad a chance to rescue glimmer in Corridors (and I think also in The Heart Part 1/2 whenever it plays, but I can't remember and am not so sure) adora has a pressing task to be dealing with, that helps her put aside her shock and grief and pain at the thought of losing catra in that moment. Here that doesn't happen, and in this moment adora is either allowing herself to grieve, or is overwhelmed by grief & can't see a way out, and the music conveys this in the extra ramping up of tension with no resolving, and then the note from 3:44 - 3:49 hits again from 4:00 - 4:05, and we get a low hum and nothing else for 5 more seconds before mara shows & and (what I haven't checked but presume is) mara's theme starts playing at 4:10, and only then does adora move from her position of grief, (and also only then in the episode does adora recognise madame razz).
So yeah, I like this version of the catradora promise theme a bit more than the other one used throughout the series, as this one gives space to let adora grieve, or it highlights how overwhelmed with grief adora is, where in the other iterations things move on quicker alike how adora moves on quicker either to cope, or because she feels that she has a duty that is more worth her focus than her feelings.
I would give this version a 10/10, and I would give the other version/s a 10/10 also, because categorising how I feel about it with a number-based scale I feel would flatten the depth of what I'd want to convey :)

I really love DreamWorks Dragons: Race To The Edge and Tangled The Series but neither one released a score album so I uploaded all my favorites onto Soundcloud but they're just audio clips from the episodes so they have all the sound effects and dialogue. It would be nice to remove them if possible but a lot of sound editors don't leave you with a clear sound. The ones you've done all turned out really well and the music is still clear and not fuzzy so great job!
