Lets Dance is my favourite Bowie album, simply because it takes me back to a really happy time in my youth. I lived in Texas and got to see Nile Rogers play a few months after Bowie passed. He was supporting Duran Duran. He did a whole set of songs from this album, including Lets Dance. It was an amazing tribute. You could tell how proud he was of the record and how much he admired Bowie. Also nice to know that there is some Texas on the record thanks to SRV.
I finally saw Bowie on this tour. This song and a few others from this album were on non stop rotation on the radio stations in 1983. Anyway he headlined day 3 of the massive US Festival in 1983. I was not aware of the back story of this song until now. Thanks Doug.
I've always loved Bowie and the various types of music he made. I believe the Let's Dance album was one of his most popular for top 40 or songs on the radio, which I was glad to see.
You should hear Nile Rodgers story about how David brought this to him as a strum bum folk song. Nile said, leave it with me for a few days and this was the result.
This album kickstarted SRV’s career and the subsequent tour revived another guitarist career. SRV couldn’t tour with Bowie so David recruited childhood friend Peter Frampton to perform on the tour.
From what I read at the time, SRV wanted Double Trouble to open. When David said he did not want an opening act, SRV declined to do the tour and David got Earl Slick to replace him.
I went into this video knowing everything about this track and not expecting surprises. About 15 years ago I contracted Menieres and lost my left ear. Subsequently, I lost a relationship, a job, and gained a depression I have not yet conquered. Thank you for reminding me of the importance of joy that is within reach.
great stuff! hope you cover more bowie in the future. the 2018 re-recording of the album never let me down, also on the loving the alien box set, is a real treat.
4:08 The best cover of Let's Dance is actually by indie folk/alt-country artist M. Ward who turns into a beautifully sincere folk ballad like the romantic lyrics hint at
If you haven't yet watched that performance at Montreux By Stevie Ray Vaughan, it's phenomenal. They also just about booed him off the stage because apparently he was too loud after a day of mostly acoustic jazz. Also I believe David wasn't the one in the audience. I think it was Jackson Brown who was in the audience, but then brought Stevie with him afterward to David's studio where he was working nearby, and they had a jam session all night. I might have that reversed, but I'm pretty sure I don't. Also he had spent the last several years making the most obscure, eclectic, non-commercial shit that he possibly could because he was pissed off at a bad contract deal at his old record company where his manager was getting 50%. As soon as that contract was over he switched and made the most financially productive music of his career. I will also say, the two albums that come after Let's Dance are terrible (IMO. They're the only albums of his that I can't even listen all the way through. The only good thing that came out of it was Loving the Alien, And that was really only after he totally reworked it in the late '90s and early 2000s). It's what happens when he then decides he wants to stick with being commercial for a little bit and give the record company more of what they want, which is more of the same. It's also funny that that terrible group of albums then led to probably his most financially successful tour as well, the glass spider tour.
I don’t know if it’s the type of music you would react to, but I’d love to hear your thoughts on Counting Crows’ ‘Round Here’ and specifically Noah Gundersens’ cover of it. :) Love the videos, they’ve taught me so much new stuff about music theory EDIT: And if you want something more musically challenging: You Never Know from Dave Matthews is a good way to start down the rabbit hole called Carter Beauford :)
Also, If you recall about 2 New Years ago, Miley Cyrus sang this song with David Byrne from Talking Heads band. It was Miley’s New Years show. They both did such an excellent job. His voice is strong enough for that song & very appropriate since David was the one who inducted David Bowie Into the Rock Hall Of Fame back in 1996. I have that video from the New Years show. I downloaded it from YT before they deleted it.
Is this blasphemy? I prefer the radio edit. It's tighter and as a result it captures a bit more urgency in the vibe. Additionally, SRV's contribution comes into focus better. This just feels drawn out to me. Cheers on another great reaction! And kudos to UM + Huey on the cool cover!
The story of how Stevie Ray ended up on the album and why he did not tour with Bowie in support of the album/song is interesting and one of the reasons the music business kinda sucks
hey, i know im kinda late but i was watching your Dragonborn video and i have a console recomendation for you if youre still interested. its the Xbox Series S, the most accessible and competent present-gen console. only bad thing is it doesnt have Days Gone nor God of War lol but it still has a great library
Pity Doug never followed up his review of Ziggy Stardust with one on Aladdin Sane which is often referred to as Ziggy goes to America and is a far more more interesting album music wise.
Not a big David Bowie fan. I really like this one though. Is it true that Bowie does not like this song? I think he did not like some of his 80 pop hits. Simple little song very produced. But a nice dance song.

seeing david bowie in smaller venues was mighty. one of the best performers ever.

The bass line is killer on this , one of my favorite bass lines ever.
This is the version we all danced to at the school dance and the club.
The story behind how David Bowie saw SRV’s heavily booed 1982 Montreaux Jazz Fest set and enticed him into recording on this record is amazing
David Bowie is awesome
Hard to stay seated during that tune ! It's just of that kind. I so dig it. Thanks for sharing the song and your reaction.

Great reaction who doesn’t love a bit of Bowie

Couldn't get SRV so asks Peter Frampton to fill in. Bowie has some pull. Love Diamond Dogs with Tina Turner. They were terrific.
Actually Earl Slick was recruited. Peter Frampton joined Bowie on his 87 Tour.
From what I read at the time, SRV wanted Double Trouble to open. When David said he did not want an opening act, SRV declined to do the tour and David got Earl Slick to replace him.
Earl Slick and Carlos Alomar on that tour IIRC

This is the version of Let’s Dance that I keep on my playlist. 🥰🎸🔥
Clapton used to carry one of my dads tapes with him when he would travel by bus.
great stuff! hope you cover more bowie in the future. the 2018 re-recording of the album never let me down, also on the loving the alien box set, is a real treat.
Bowie wrote a song about his working with Nile Rodgers called Bring Me The Disco King which I think is his only jazz song.
Niles’ chord extensions and Omar Hakim’s groove provide the platform for David and Stevie.

Oh, you already have Anchor Drops. That's an album i would've loved to see you react to
"Put on your red shoes and dance the blues..."
loving the bowie binge and all the stories behind the songs

Hey that is so sad about the news Huey. Let it be a tribute to you AND David. Thank you for giving us all of your gifts.
Doug, I'm not sure if you'd even consider 90's indie music in the UK. But the verve, urban hymns is one of the greatest albums of all tIme IMHO!

this is the extended mix version of the single mix
Groovy! I'm going to have to learn that bassline. I feel like I've been a bit of a negative nancy lately, this is just what I need!
My long awaited Peter Gabriel request coming soon?
Any album from Station to Station - Scary Monsters would be great to react to
Since you love a good SRV guest appearance, check out James Brown's Living in America. Not a lot in there but very noticeable.

we want Megadeth!!

Hello, I want to request a listen to the game Throne and Liberty's main theme song, it's classically composed and very epic
I love David Bowie but he wrote so many songs better than this one
