I recently got a December 2018 Golf SE Nav 1.5 petrol manual with ACC. At first, (my last couple of cars were automatics to take advantage of ACC) I thought this was about as much use as a chocolate fireguard, because the ACC would cancel when I hit the clutch to change gear, but no, it only cancels when you hit the brake. I have an hour-long commute, the vast majority of which is between 40 and 70. Because the gears on this car are deliberately "long", I can run the car up to 6th gear, kick on the ACC and simply, clinically adjust my speed limit with the ACC. So I'm cruising at 40, and I hit a 60 stretch: up 4 presses on the ACC (each press is +/- 5mph). Now my limit is 60. Then it goes down to 50: down 2. And so on. And I'm leaving the car in 6th gear the whole time and it isn't prompting me to change down, even at 40, with the "eco" light often staying on for long periods. I am finding this ACC really, really convenient on my way into and away from work. Out of my 45 mile commute, I would say I do over 40 on ACC, just nudging the limit up or down as the speed limit changes. I just have to concentrate on steering and my mirrors, and be ready to change down at roundabouts (about the only time I need to brake), because I prefer engine braking to wearing out the brake pads or discs.
yes it does. It's an excellent feature and i use it when i do motorway runs. You can also constantly trim your speed via the remote on the steering wheel. Its the main toy i loved which helped in persuading me to buy the car over the Audi RS3
Lovely feature and amazing that it’s standard. I’m wondering though, will the car change gears itself should traffic slow or even stop in front? Can it bring the car to a halt and get it going again without intervention?
in the vw manual its termed "emergency city braking". It works ok but does now and again kick in when it doesnt need too. It kicked in again Friday as i was driving to work
Thanks for the video. I’ve tried ACC with my GTE a couple of times and I find it weird for the car to take over. When I’m in traffic and it has slowed me down, I find that I have to use the accelerator to move off again, it doesn’t start up automatically, maybe I still haven’t set it right? I still can’t get used to ACC mode, plus I like to see the mileometer and this disappears in ACC mode. The jury is still out 😀
Hi mate. ACC works for me where if the vehicle comes to a complete stop, it wont move again unless you a.) tap the accelerator peddle or b.) hit the RES button on the steering column. I find that annoying really as surely the car can detect the car in front moving off? Unless it was a design assuming the car in front stopped because you have come to a junction or traffic lights, and the car couldnt possibly know if its safe to move forward or not so let the decision remain with the driver
Jay Kay Since my comment and looking at your video, I’ve had a bit more confidence to try ACC again. I now find it is great and will use it more frequently. When at a stop in traffic I now start off by hitting the RES button as you mentioned and that has made it easier. Also when slowing down quickly in traffic I have been using the minus tab and the car goes down 5 mph at a time. Similarly, I increase the speed setting by hitting the plus tab. Thanks.👍😄
App connect was standard on my Transporter edition 30. When I got it it wasn't working and said needs activation. Dealer did it for free but the first time they did it, I lost my standard nav and Bluetooth. Second time it all came back. I have ACC on my van also. Its really good but since my van is manual, its not stop and go ACC. when the speed goes below 20km/h, it cuts out (UK van) By the way, what watch are you wearing in the video?
+Sean Walsh i love it! At the moment i've not suffered the "i miss the manual feel" problem, but ive not driven my R in over a week now as i've been away on business. Now im back though the weather is shite lol but hopefully il get to play in her tomorrow as forecast is sunny and warm!
My last (company) car was a Skoda Octavia with DSG. Smooth as silk. Though now I'm on a manual Golf after years on automatics, I'd have to say manual transmissions seem have improved, too. The car has an electronic handbrake, and all you have to do is goose the throttle in 1st and off she goes, really smooth.
I'm going to the dealer this Saturday and none of them has mentioned any subscription for the app connect (here in Sweden) so if they come up with that bs later at least I'll be ready!
just enjoy the process. Some people see it as a chore but i quite enjoy it. It's even better if you get on with the sales team and dealership, because you have a lot of banter in the process. Good luck with your purchase mate :)
+Sean Walsh yes i know, buying a used car is risky business. I was going to buy a couple of year old R but their prices are so high (£27k i saw cheapest with 10k miles on) that for a couple of grand more i bought new instead, in a better colour and better options added
+Sean Walsh well mainly because i havent got time to keep cleaning my cars. If it gets wet, that means it cant go under its cover until its dry. Once the weather is dry, it'll need cleaning, drying and then putting undercover. One of the ball aches of owning many cars
+Jay Kay just one more question, were you tempted to hang on and wait for the Mk 8 Golf R? Seeing as tho you purchased at the back end of production on the Mk 7 R.
+Sean Walsh nah. I've had my eye on this R for a couple years now, and the last production run is always bullet proof. The first versions of this R suffered terrible turbo failures, but that is part on parcel of the first production run. The very first honda civic type r (ep3) suffered many problems too. So the first mk8's will have many issues
+Sean Walsh my pleasure. I love talking cars :). More videos coming soon, il probably do two or three videos tomorrow. One on my Halfords car covers too, im not that impressed with them so i guess that is a video in itself
if it ever went tits up id not bother getting ir repaired, its not need for mot. I have also been told that it chews through your rear disc and pads so i dont use it anymore
this is german work german car... is ao easy and this car i buy it nut thi is gte i mean but my is 2.0 tdi blue motion , (2013) with, 130 000 Km and i bye in germany for just for 12 000 € . finaly price in Macedonia 17 000€ and dont want more Enzo or Aventador ha ha is fast economic comfort stability have masaage 100 sensors maybe more than this car 18 inch tire everything all in golf7 i have with this price dont need to give for enzo or bugatti 2.000 000€ i have that car with 17 000€ and never will changed never england or american french or all nation cant do it thish job the GERMAN are the German simple i am albanian Muslim i vana to change just nationality to be german because i love it but not religion i cant because in my cantry doesn't let me it is not in EU WITHOUT the german the world cant function like now will bee more catastrofic they help and simply do everything best for all..........
Just picked up a golf gt and hadn't a clue how this worked, straight to UA-cam and this came up. Cheers mate
No problem mate
Hey Jay. Thx for the explaining how ACC works including the setup. No matter how many times I read manual it's far better to watch your video's.
No problem mate. I was the same. Read the manual a dozen times and it was Greek to me lol
A short note, the cruise control maintains the distance using the time interval to the car in front and not a set distance.
Is each line a second? Supposed to leave 2 second gap as a minimum on dry roads
I use this on my gti and can really notice that majority of people can maintain a steady speed on a clear road

Thanks for the video Jay, very informative. Will give it a try!
Does ACC bring your car to a full stop? And set off again when the car in front drives away?
yes it does. It's an excellent feature and i use it when i do motorway runs. You can also constantly trim your speed via the remote on the steering wheel. Its the main toy i loved which helped in persuading me to buy the car over the Audi RS3
Good video thanks mate
Very helpful video thankyou brother♥️
Lovely feature and amazing that it’s standard. I’m wondering though, will the car change gears itself should traffic slow or even stop in front? Can it bring the car to a halt and get it going again without intervention?
Troupe Goal I believe it will slow down to full stop, and then you need to press resume button on the steering wheel to go again
Get my new ‘18 reg golf gti performance in 3 weeks. Thanks for the video.
Did you get the car r are you just waffling
when you were about to collide with the object in front of you, is it ACC or AEB that takes over the brake to make full stop?
in the vw manual its termed "emergency city braking". It works ok but does now and again kick in when it doesnt need too. It kicked in again Friday as i was driving to work
What is it like with traffic jam assist with lain assist what's that system like I wonder
Do all DSGs have cruise control? I'm looking at Scirocco GTS or Scirocco R but can't see any mentioning cruise control.
Can you just have cruise control not using ACC? I have a golf r and it's really confusing
Nice one mate!
So does it take over the steering as well ?
no but i believe "lane assist" does to some extent

Sort of. I think a did a video driving in a busy town

If only everyone treated their cars like you, I wouldn't hesitate in buying a used car then.

It’s great after 2.5 hours it switches of
C Titterington Just as well I only have a 1 hour commute, then.
Would be good if it could be turned completely off gets annoying sometimes especially the random braking
Wait until it goes tits up, ££££ to repair
if it ever went tits up id not bother getting ir repaired, its not need for mot. I have also been told that it chews through your rear disc and pads so i dont use it anymore
