We lost a prior cat a bit early due to his teeth going bad. When we adopted our current cats, the vet told us one of them had a congenital problem where he would be losing teeth periodically through his life. Using the ideas in this video, our cats have toothbrushing before breakfast every day and it's part of their routine. Just a couple quick swipes on each side and its all done. They L.O.V.E. the commercial poultry flavored toothpaste. For several years now, our cats have had perfect dental exams every time; no expensive and risky cleaning under anesthesia and no tooth removal. We use the 'my first toothbrush' we get from Target; they are smaller than the brush used in the video.
Nicely done. Good to see you didn’t have a cat that was completely cooperative. I can see our little guy squirming a bit. But he will sit still for tuna juice. I’m sure of that.
I've got a very good cat who doesn't fight too much when I brush her teeth. With that said she still runs of afterwards and hides for a few minutes. I've found it useful to put some on the brush after we're done, just a very small amount, and then I hold that in front of the place she hides. She loves the chicken flavour we use so she licks the brush clean and over time this seems to have made her less scared of the brush.
It is easy to get used to brushing a cat right when it is a young kitten. You cannot make a cat do anything against its wishes - it all goes by NEGOTIATION and persuasion. You may not be able to make a cat do everything like cooperate with a full brushing on the first time. Do it slowly and little by little each day and develop into a full brushing exercise. If your cat does not let you brush it for more than a few seconds on the first time, that's ok - keep increasing the brushing time each day. Remember - never miss a day to brush your cat as it takes just 24 hours to build up the plaque. Brush the cat at least once a day.
My cat had his lower front premolar removed for a resorbed tooth found on X-Ray. I was told he would be at risk for more resorbed teeth. He will let me put toothpaste on his front top teeth and the top front sides with my finger, and a toothbrush but less willingly. For him I need to do the bottom premolar area and I can't figure out how to do that area.
What about their back molars? I brush my cats front teeth but struggle to reach his back teeth. I’ve learned the hard way. One of my cats had a stroke from anathesia. I wish I had brushed his teeth to avoid dental surgery. I eventually lost him, the saddest day of my life.
i use a catbrush thats thin and has a small round head from the brand trixie for the side and the back teeth. I first look to see if the gums are allright and then i just slide it in her mouth and brush these teeth without looking at them.
unfortunately I've had my cat's for 12 years and just started two years ago I never knew in my wildest dreams that you would have to brush their teeth.... But duh duh you have teeth they need to be brushed ! anyways I get in there and get it done in my boy kitties a real good about iteven though they're twelve now I've had him for 12 yearshis sister not so good but I get in there and do it anyway I just kind of hold her down get it done...
Thank you! I'm thinking of adopting a cat and I didn't even knew I had to brush their teeth! I want to ask, too, is it necessary to bathe an indoor cat?
Thanks! What if the cat is resistant to brushing? Do we risk losing the cat's trust if we use a towel or scruff them to hold them in place? Or do they forget about it as soon as we stop?
Wrapping your cat in a towel is a technique that is deemed low stress handling. This should be a non-aggressive way to help control the cat and help to keep them more still to be able to accomplish brushing of the teeth. Scruffing a cat is a more aggressive restrain technique. My recommendation would be to towel wrap the cat and try to go slower with training them to be more amendable to working in the mouth. Wrapping them in a towel and then letting them lick canned food off of the tooth brush for several days to weeks may help them to get used to being wrapped in the towel and used to the tooth brush near their mouth.
cnsengineer I just adopted a 1 year old cat a month ago so I know the importance of trust, you don’t have to worry about that too much. I wrap my cat in a towel and brush her teeth, right after I just let her go and gives her a treat. She would just forget about it and shes not upset with me.
Personally, my cat HATES being wrapped in a towel, but doesn’t mind scruffing. She runs away from me if I wrap her in a towel but if I *gently* scruff her and be nice to her she’s way way more accepting of that. It just depends on your cat.
Baking soda will taste bad to your cat and potentially cause them to have an aversion to brushing. Using baking soda can also potentially lead to metabolic abnormalities due to the cat’s inability to swish and spit. They would be consuming the baking soda and not spitting it out.
When gets clean cats teeth they actually sedate them or give them medicine to make them unconscious and they use electric tools and they scrape off all of the plaucue until the teeth are white (I had this done to my cat cause his teeth were nasty)
If you ever have any concerns about your pet’s teeth or oral cavity, you should always consult your veterinarian. With out being able to examine your kitten, there is no way to confirm that there is anything to be concerned about, or if what you are seeing is normal. Please schedule an appointment with your veterinarian for evaluation.
Ideally teeth for dogs or cats should be performed daily, or once every 24 hours. This coupled with a professional anesthetized dental cleaning at least every 9-12 months.
@@uknowvideos I brush my cats teeth every day and every year when i go to the vet he says that my cats teeth look good. Im confused why do you say that the vet still has to clean it?
@@xdaydreamerx If you are compliant with dental homecare and your cat is compliant with your efforts, the need for an anesthetized dental cleaning can potentially be infrequent. However, your veterinarian does not have the ability to look below the gumline to evaluate whether there are areas of disease than cannot be observed on a conscious examination. Your veterinarian cannot evaluate if there is increased periodontal pocketing or evidence of tooth resorption without an anesthetized examination, dental radiography, and dental cleaning.
According to the 2019 American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Dental Guidelines for Dogs and Cats, “A true dental prophylaxis (complete dental cleaning, polishing, and intraoral dental radiographs in the absence of obvious lesions) is recommended by 1 yr of age for cats and small- to medium-breed dogs, and by 2 yr of age for larger-breed dogs.” “The conscious oral evaluation is an important first step to anticipating procedural extent and preparing and educating clients regarding anticipated findings while under general anesthesia. In many instances, the examiner will underestimate the presence of disease during conscious evaluation, only to have the full extent of oral pathology revealed by periodontal probing and intraoral radiography.” “Only after the patient has been anesthetized can a complete and thorough oral evaluation be successfully performed” “Clients must be told specifically that brushing only removes plaque, not calculus. Brushing needs to be done daily to be of benefit. Brushing teeth with already inflamed gingiva will cause pain and animal aversion. Even daily brushing does not preclude the need for anesthetized exams, radiographs, and therapy, the same as in human dental care.”
Just as you as an individual likely brush your teeth at least daily, you still likely visit your dentist on a regular, if not 6 month basis. These visits are to allow your dentist or dental hygienist evaluate your oral cavity and look for areas of disease. It is the same with canine and feline patients. A thorough oral evaluation cannot be performed on a conscious animal. Therefore, an anesthetized dental cleaning needs to be performed periodically. The frequency depends on the level of homecare you can provide, the compliance of the patient, and the patient’s genetic tendency towards developing good or potentially bad oral health. Just because “the teeth look good” on the surface, does not mean that below the surface, disease is present.

Bottom line if you feed your cat wet commercial food you need to brush your cat's teeth every day. Research raw diet for your cat. Raw food is what cats are supposed to eat. Typically the cat will do a great job of cleaning itself. No need for baths unless they have come into contact with something very sticky or smelly.

is it possible to use dog toothpaste with cats?
As long as the toothpaste is manufactured for animals, it should be fine to use for dogs or cats. NEVER USE HUMAN TOOTHPASTE for Dogs OR Cats!
Does anyone know what kind of cat this is? I have one super similar and I can’t tell what he is.
I would call it a domestic shorthair-i.e. mixed breed cat. It is not a purebred cat, so the generic term would be domestic shorthair.
Does that mean that toothpaste is not important for cats??
Never thought you can use low sodium chicken broth 😅
