I really love hearing your opinions. Maverick was a great movie, and definitely a sequel which is far better and arguably more mature than the original, to reflect how the characters have grown in three decades.
As someone who actively dislikes the original for being kinda dull and without any meaningful arc or characterization - "Maverick" was one of the most Boombastic and joyful cinematic experiences I had in 2022
Great video as always and I can’t wait for the best and worst lists! Speaking of, the thing that occurs at the 14:51 mark is pretty gnarly. But the most deeply upsetting moment in this video is how you’ve found ten worse movies than both “Jurassic Dominion” and “Morbius” out there. 😰
My objection to Smile is the implicit lesson that trauma cannot be escaped and it will absolutely kill you, so all you can expect to do is spread it to those you love or do violence on strangers.
I really WANTED to like "Where the Crawdads Sing", since I liked the book it's based on. However, it seemed like a Lifetime movie which somehow received a theatrical release, and despite Daisy Edgar Jones' fine performance, it just felt steeped in clichés.
Despite the effects and a few action seane's Jurassic World Dominion should have gone of the worst list for it's wasted idea alone not to mention the execution of the whole movie was just atrocious not to mention some of the worst writing and Dialogue in the action Blockbuster I've seen in ages and I'm not even a movie critic
Thanks so much for your Best and Worst picks of 2022. "Aftersun" was truly my favourite film, since it really captures a parent and child's relationship from both a child and adult's perspective. It's a great way of showing how childhood innocence can blind us to the realities of life, especially where our parents are concerned. Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio were truly outstanding, and I hope that they're both up for a plenitude of nominations come Awards Season.
Strange question, but where do you hear about movie releases in general? I'm in the industry, I try to keep up, but even here I'm seeing a couple of film I'd not heard of.
So - I've got a few ways I keep track of things; - Indiewire - Empire Magazine - Sight & Sound - Letterboxd - The In/Frame/Out discord ... Everything else is either from browsing new releases each week at cinema, or new releases on VOD
I must be the only person who didn't fall in love with Aftersun. Elvis should have been a miniseries. Enjoyed Emily the Criminal. Here is hoping it doesn't take another 30 years for a third Top Gun film. Yet we are getting a new Jurassic World film. I rather see a new Venom film that see Morbius again. Even my parents were shocked that they made a film about Where the Crawdad sing.
Your recommendation videos are always a blast to watch, you've pointed out so many movies I've never heard of at this point and I cannot overstate how grateful I am for it. Keep up the awesome videos
I thought Smile was above average. However, it could have been great. It is basically a werewolf movie were you don't know if they have transformed or not and the only victim is themselves...., so treat it as such and the protagonist being a psychologist she would have access to drugs, constraints, and other professionals that could have helped her. If we had seen it from their perspective it would have been more interesting. Try to protect her from herself. Self-harm angle and such you know.
My thoughts on the films I saw in the list: Aftersun - a very British indie film in the vein of Lynne Ramsay and Andrea Arnold. It was deep with characters and themes but the narrative was loose. Elvis - I loved it as a lavish musical biopic. The themes were familiar to other musical biopics but at least Elvis told it with gusto. Parallel Mothers - I agree that Penelope Cruz was great in the film but it felt like two different stories smashed together. Three Thousand Years of Longing - It reminded me of Life of Pi because there was it was a special effects-heavy arthouse film. I liked the ambition and there was a lot to admire but the heart of the story was only evident in the final act. Top Gun: Maverick - better than Top Gun since there are stakes and it acknowledges Tom Cruise's advancing years. I recommend watching the Owlkitty video if you want a good-natured parody. Jurassic World: Dominion - it was better than Fallen Kingdom. Jurassic Park only really worked as a one-and-done, not a franchise. Morbius - I could have watched the Blade films instead. The most fun part of the film was seeing how badly the London Underground doubled for the New York Subway Prey for the Devil - It felt like a bland horror film made in the 2000s. Smile - Thank you, I wasn't the only one who disliked it. There was some nice directional flash but it felt like Ringu and It Follows way too much and I'm surprised no one noticed the daisy chain of suicides. Where the Crawdads Sing - a film made for middle-aged ladies. Daisy Edgar-Jones shows a lot of promise as a performer. It was average, although I judge the shopkeepers for not calling social services or not taking in Kya and letting a 7-year-old girl sell mussels.
Mark Witton describing how Hatzegopteryx would hunt us if it was still alive delivered in way that make you think ih he saw it happen did more for "dinosaurs in our world" than JWD could ever hope.
I've intentionally avoided Elvis this year despite my love of musicals and everything Baz Luhrmann does solely because of what a piece of shit Elvis the person was and how tired I am of the unquestioning worship he's continued to receive over the years. All the praise around the film definitely makes it a little harder to resist but I can't imagine it's going to be 2.5 hours of the critical spotlight I'm wanting shone on Elvis' life.
Thank you for your discretion on the Studio 666 review. I wish more people were that thoughtful when trying to get their point across. Keep up the good work.
oh thank god someone else who didn't like smile. That entire movie just stressed me out in the wrong way and didn't even have a satisfying conclusion and then all the reviews i've seen are majority positive and I felt insane. Thank you
saw 3000 years of longing... the ending was my favorite part. not a bad movie but for an extravaganda of emotion that it was suppose to be i felt mostly ho hum. the short story that it is based on is probably better.
My wife and I saw 3000 years of longing a few months ago. It was an excellent movie, but more so than that it was so unique! it's hard to think of anything quite like it! Maybe Big Fish? Either way it was a great experience!
Oooh this is fascinating! To me, Tar is my favorite film of the year by quite a bit, and possibly my favorite film to come out since Parasite. In contrast, I HATED Elvis minus Austin Butler's incredible performance, and quite liked Smile.
Aftersun would probably make my top 10. Would highly recommend Joel Haver’s We Have To Leave Here Together which is probably my favorite of the year (either that or Everything Everywhere). It’s an hour long and free on UA-cam. Luck and Unfavorable Odds are in my top 10 worst.
Every time I hear someone reference The Gray Man, my first thought is the movie "The Gray Man" from 2007, about famed serial killer Albert Fish. I wonder what would have happened if they cast Chris Evans, Ryan Gosling, and Ana de Armas in that.
You really get me excited about cinema in a way that few critics could. Because of this list, my own "to-be-watched" list has grown by at least 5 films.
I can't actually say I am with you with Smile, I actually liked it a lot. Since you so harshly differ in your opinion I am all the more intrigued to get into the horror movies you like though ^^ Can you drop a name to watch outside of the "known" ones? (Looking at you Hereditary)
Is it petty that I never want to see Jurassic World Dominion? Not out of "you ruined my childhood" angsty entitlement, but more out of "if I watch this I'm going to agitate my depression" kind of deal.
I'm an English teacher and my colleagues had all read 'Where the Crawdads Sing' so we went to it as a faculty outing. This was the only reason I did not walk out on the film. The main character was tastefully impoverished, wanted by all men but at the same time the grossest girl ever and always looked like she'd walked out of a cottage-core aesthetic instagram page. It went on for far too long and the characters were boring at best and unbelievable at worst. Perhaps the worst thing about the experience was my quip afterwards that 'man, didn't even hear the crawdads sing' was taken as a serious remark as they all advised me that crawdads were crustaceans. I know they are.
Not sure if you’d agree, but apparently the director of smile admits that he loves jump scares in horror movies. Stating “I wanted to infuse the film with jump scares that felt earned and were designed in a way that would keep an audience on their toes, sort of ramping up and changing how it’s scaring you.”
