i`ve never heard valve trombone before so i expect the sound still similar to the original trombone but the different is just with the valve-y transition sound in it ... then turn out just like what i`ve expected =D
thank you for the wholesome plays sir! =)

WELL, KEITH, I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'RE a legend or not (as the man says!), only because I'm a Trumpet player, takin'a breath of Fresh Air, and takin'a quick look-see/Walk here, ON THE WILD SIDE! but that tone, man! That is superlative!

I have an identical horn. It is fantastic and you sounded great again.
Another great valve trombonist was Rob McConnell. Rob played the 5g valves with an 8 H bell section section attached-at least that is my understanding.
    Keep up the great videos!

Thanks for your kind comments! Pairing the 5G valves with an 8H bell would be interesting; part of me wonders about the ability of the .500" bore to put enough energy in to get the large bell/taper to ring but I can imaging it having a beautiful velvety warmth (which makes sense knowing how Rob McConnell played...)

      Schmitt Music Trombone Shop
Have a listen to any Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass album. It worked for Rob. His valve section was modified and had triggers on the the 1st and 3rd valve slides just like the Triple C.
Thanks for the great videos as always!

I used to play one back in middle school- Junior year in high school it is my all time favorite instrument I have played I’ve only ever had seen one in person and had asked the school district allow me to move schools with it as I got older so I could try mastering such an elegant and rich sounding instrument. The valved trombone I had once played now resides in a display case in the last school I went to. I hope to Play one again someday .

great horn, Brookmeyer also played a Reynolds back in the day, TV 29 I think, another great horn. larger dual bore, a lot like the Olds valve section but 8 1/2 inch bell.. I have both and a King 3b valve, and newer Kanstul, last one out of the factory before it sold. I've enjoyed playing them. one good combo is the 3b concert bell, with the Conn 5g valve section.. great sound and still the good intonation. fun

  • @peterdegroff7318

You sound really good on the valve bone. No stuffy sound like some people got. They all lined up behind Brookmeyer! I'm am presently seeking a valve section to mate up with my 6H. The valve section alone is a 7G and when mated to a 6H it became a 5G. If you have one or have the 6H/5G combo(That was a Conn option)I'd like to hear from you.

I have a Lyon Healey (Martin stencil) from a good while before this. To me the concept is very fun, not quite a true trombone in some ways but with qualities of trombone and qualities of other low brass too. As mainly a trumpeter I find it harder to slot in low register than it would be on, say, a standard tenor bone, but that may be a quality of the Lyon Healey specifically

Your sound was better here than on some of the earlier videos of yours. I do not have to ask if you are practicing more, I can hear it. This is another instrument I think you should get for yourself. Not many of us out here would sound that good on this instrument. I do have one question that is tangential to the valve trombone that I have always been curious about. Why did Bob Brookmeyer play a valve trombone and not the slide trombone? I am a HUGE Gerry Mulligan fan and scholar. I have about 300 plus recordings of Mulligan, read every book ever published about him, read every magazine article ever written, studied his compositions, and talked to people who knew him personally and played in his bands. Brookmeyer's name comes up frequently, but I have never heard why he played exclusively on valve trombone. I have never heard a recording where he ever played a slide trombone. If anyone knows, please reply. Great video of a great instrument.

  • @cameronhizer3767

I understand that Bob Brookmeyer had the leadpipe replaced by a guy named Larry Minick (I think) and that helped a whole lot.

When I moved to another high school in Grade 12, the music teacher handed me a valve trombone. I said: 'I have no idea how to play this.' he seemed genuinely puzzled. 'I went to a school that barely had regular trombones - certainly didn't have one of these.' So with a sigh, he got me a regular trombone.

For pure enjoyment I might have to say the 1130 (but a lot of that is because I actually own it :) ). The 6H is a phenomenal instrument but I enjoy the difference of the sound and even physical feel of the 1130; I actually just got done practicing on it and the more I play it the more I love it...With that said, if I were looking for a true valve trombone I have never played one better then this 6H/5G!
