- During the months of August and September local Melbourne Pale Octopus (Octopus pallidus)lay their eggs and then stay with them until they hatch. They will often use bottles and other man made rubbish to lay their eggs in or underneath. Here one is found in the shallows in a trap made by a fisherman: giving us a chance to time-lapse her dedication to defend her eggs from predators. You want to know what’s sad is this mamma octopus will do whatever it takes to defend her eggs and that includes not eating so she can be home defending her eggs. Because of that she will die from starvation to protect her babies and octopuses are very very smart animals. There are channels here on UA-cam where people have created a maze with areas of the maze with some type of puzzle for them to complete so they can move to the next obstacle which could be moving something blocking an entrance to another part of the tank or unscrewing a lid to move on. One guy did this and at the very end of the maze the octopus as treated to a feast of all you can eat shrimp buffet. He did this because he got the octopus as a pet but he wanted to release the octopus but was afraid to do so since he or she had been in captivity. When he saw the octopus win against the maze he kept his promise and released the octopus into their natural habitat!

Wow. That octopus mother has like no pause at all… do they ever leave the hatching place? Do they eat? How long does it take until the babies hatch?
If I recall it takes about 6 months for them to hatch
The octopus mother will not leave the eggs for any reason. She will stay and guard them and slowly starves during this process. By the time they hatch the mother will pass away.

From my understanding, both male and female enter a state of self destruction after mating and egg hatching. Its due to glands located near their eyes essentially making them go mad as the glands release chemicals that kill them/ causes them to behave erratically. Some will self cannibalize or engage in self injurious behaviors . It's very tragic, evolution is metal.
Who knew a starfish could be so annoying. I thought all they did was sit around all day on the beach. 😅

@@PangQuong Yeah some scientists offered bits of food near the mouth and sometimes the mothers would accept them. Otherwise they just starve to death I'm always amazed at octomoms' dedication to their babies.

Fascinating video, but I don't like the backing track. I suppose the track depicts the harassment that the octopus mother is experiencing from the starfish, but I find it very uncomfortable listening to it. I suppose I can just mute it 🙁 .

Not a bucket, although they(appropriate size octopus)will use an old bucket that been discarded as a home. In this case it an octopus trap that been made out of plastic down pipe with one end capped. These are commonly found around our bay and are normally tethered in groups . Occasionally they break free and get washed ashore..

I now understand why the mother have to guard her eggs! Didn't know that starfish eats them! Those other little fish too. Poor mother too stressed bet she's dead now. Well she'll die eventually after hatching but have you tried feeding mother octopus while guarding her eggs? Will she eat tho? No? Even if she eat, will she live or still die?

its a cut down pipe( plastic tube.)A octopus trap that fishermen use. These species love them. They will use bottles and cans and other throw away items that humans discard in the ocean to hide in and lay their eggs on them .

I wonder why the North Pacific Sea Star is after the eggs and not the octopus because the octopus actually has meat which is what seastars want.
It well might be after the octopus, and under normal circumstances the Octopus would simply move off...but in this scenario it won't leave her eggs.
