Excellent, very few other youtubers bother to do tutorials like this, especially this detailed.

Thanks, Priscilla! This is amazing. I usually don't bother with thumbnails that will require layers and swapping out the background because when I do them it's just very haphazard. I always love your thumbnails, and I don't know why I found watching this to be so fascinating, but it really was! UA-cam is about to get a flux of nicer thumbnails from everyone! lol

  • @DanikaLeighEllis

Wow, thank you so much for this tutorial! I've always admired your thumbnails, but I didn't think it would be possible to do without photoshop. (Or if it was, I wouldn't know where to start.)
You obviously spent a lot of time learning these skills, and it's so generous to share them like this.

    • @thereadables

Danika Leigh Ellis No problem :) GIMP is great if you don't have PS. And the techniques like masking, and how to use the pen tool can be used to create many things, not just what I've shown in this tutorial X)
      Thanks for watching!

Brilliant! My PS professor had us clicking around the picture rather than doing what you did. Your way is sooo much better.
Pretty sure I've used downloaded fonts in GIMP before. They just have to be in the Font Book application (mac). The font tool is pretty finicky though.

Your thumbnails are always amazing! I personally learned how to use Photoshop all by myself when I was younger and most of the things you did I know how to do as well. So to those people who don't think they can achieve thumbnails like that, believe me! You can!

Thank you for doing this :D I took a photoshop class in college and loved using the software. I unfortunately have the very old photoshop 7 and my computer won't allow me to install it for some reason so I've been playing around with Gimp but I'm unfamiliar with it. I was all about photoshop in the myspace days lol. Loved this tutorial!!!

Thank you so much for this video. My thumbnails are lacking and I have had a difficult time finding other videos that showed how to use gimp in a way that was friendly for first time users. Would you be willing to show us some information on editing tutorials? That would be so awesome.

5:48 is my favorite part of this tutorial where you realize that it's not pen tool but path tool in GIMP XD that was so sweet xD I would do the same mistake as you just to be clear since I use only PS. Great vid~ and +100 to badassery for using GIMP that's very considerate of you : )

This is very off topic but since you like Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell (Which is like my favorite stand alone book) You would probably like All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven and Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell they are AMAZING and so different from most YA books. I think you would like them!

I am as far from being an expert as you can possibly be, but when I tried using GIMP, it definitely recognized my downloaded fonts after installing them - but that was using Win7, which is probably not at all helpful to you...
Anyway, for Windows users, it should work.
I also happen to adore your colorful thumbnails, thanks for making the effort of finding out how to make them in a free software!
