We saw Wicked on broadway for a music trip, and she was playing Elphaba. Her performance of Defying gravity had me pouring tears. Still my favorite version of the song.
I was skeptical when I saw Wicked because I LOVE Idina but I was lucky enough to see it with Willemijn and I was in tears! She was astounding! Soo grateful for that show!
@@LottieTottieWasTaken it's because they have similar voice ranges, Idina voiced Elsa so it was convenient she voiced her too in Dutch and German ( only on vocals).
I remember hearing this in 2014 and not expecting much (outside during the day? Please) - but being absolutely flawed by her vocals and interpretation of the song. She is the GOAT Elphaba for me, incredible range, powerful crystalline vocals and so engulfed in the role (in 3 langauges?? And English in 2 accents? PLEASE). Love her. Literally would never have bothered with Wicked without her amazing vocals. 🎉
Love Winnie's performance I was so lucky to see her when I went to see Wicked way back when. I really wish they released a Westend soundtrack to Wicked, not that I don't enjoy the Broadway recording but like Spring Awakening I would really like a Westend version with the English accent
Fantastic performance! She was great the whole time though you could tell for the first half of the performance, her voice was a little bit stiff from the cold, but she was still pulling it off. But as the song was getting bigger and bigger, she was playing more with the notes and there was no more stiffness anyway, and she just became vocally and emotionally more incredible throughout to the end! I’m not completely a fan of how she did the riff in this video, but I guess she needed to make it to her own that way.
Something has changed within me Something is not the same I'm through with playing by the rules of someone else's game Too late for second-guessing Too late to go back to sleep It's time to trust my instincts Close my eyes and leap It's time to try defying gravity I think I'll try defying gravity And you can't pull me down I'm through accepting limits 'Cause someone says they're so Some things I cannot change But 'til I try, I'll never know Too long I've been afraid of Losing love I guess I've lost Well, if that's love, it comes at much too high a cost I'd sooner buy defying gravity Kiss me goodbye, I'm defying gravity And you can't pull me down Unlimited My future is unlimited And I just had a vision almost like a prophecy I know it sounds truly crazy True the vision’s hazy But I swear someday I’ll be flying so high defying gravity I’m flying high defying gravity And you can’t pull me down So if you care to find me Look to the western sky As someone told me lately "Everyone deserves the chance to fly" And if I'm flying solo At least I'm flying free To those who ground me Take a message back from me Tell them how I am defying gravity I'm flying high, defying gravity And soon, I'll match them in renown And nobody in all of Oz No wizard that there is or was Is ever gonna bring me down Bring me down! Oh!
I love that idea because that makes it a standalone song. it takes out the conversational part of the song with Glinda, which wouldn't make sense to sing without a second person joining in afterwards. Great edit for this specific occasion :)
So glad I am German so I never had to listen to Idina Menzel. Elphaba will allways be Willemijn Verkerk for me. So much warmth and strength in her voice, stunning
Her singing is incredible, but I’m not a fan of the unlimited section change. I know they had to change the words because they didn’t have Glinda, but to me it made the song into being about how she will fly in the future, and not about seizing her own power then and there. It really pulled me out of the song and ruined the rest of the performance emotionally for me.
The fact she played Elphaba in 4 countries and in 3 languages! She truly is the greatest
There are musical stars with worldwide fame. She absolutely deserves to be on top of that list. IMHO off coarse.
You ain’t wrong IMHO
y'all aren't wrong IMHO
I was her in the West End a few years ago and I haven’t been the same since
How Willemijn hits the last notes in the English, Dutch, and German versions of this song is simply amazing!
Unfortunately she is not in the german dub of the wicked movie. i don´t know the reasons why she isn´t but i don´t like the fact.
@@asdfjkl981 she is in .. even only in a short part... she sings the cameo part of Idina Menzel
One of my dreams is to see Willemijn playing Elphaba in the West End.
I was lucky enough to see her there and in NY and it was surreal. She is a beast.
I had her in the netherlands for wicked...was insane
@@BvideoficationI hope she reprises her role if it comes back to the Netherlands

Funny that Idina and Willemijn both have done a wicked lead role and a frozen lead role.

the way she sings it is by far one of my favourites!!
3:30-3:56 DAMN! Willemijn saying to the others you may play Elphaba. But I am HER.
I loved her high voice ❤
The best Elphaba in my opinion. She did our Dutch version, but also English and German now.
This performance is gorgeous!
She’s amazing but Idina is number one
@@smithsunleashedI think she is the best
@@smithsunleashednahh idina did a good first version but willemijn perfected it
Heavier deeper more versatile voice. So much more power than Idina. Idina version is beautiful ofc but a bit flat compared to this.

You mean floored? Your phone changed it
Amazing singer bravoooooo 👏🏻🎤💙
INCREDIBLE
Saw her on the west end. 16 times and my absolute favorite!
I love how at 3:53 the smile says “I AM Elphaba”
OMG!!!! Bravooo!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Would much prefer a West End recording
How is there a 3-yr old comment on a 1-yr old video?
Shes my Elsa, Elisabeth and europeans greatest Elphaba. She's just amazing.
And the best Mrs Danvers (Rebecca) 🤩
I would call it global even
And the best Anne Hathaway ❤
wow! awesome❤❤
love all of her vocal choices!!
majestic!
This is my favorite version by far!
Such talent best voice best elphaba ❤

She does it best in Dutch. She ll get there in English
Might be my favourite version
Для меня лучшая Эльфаба 💚🖤 Люблю её объемный голос❤
the best of the best
My favorite Elphaba!
wonderful
彼女の歌が1番好き😊
Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by the rules of someone else's game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes and leap
It's time to try defying gravity
I think I'll try defying gravity
And you can't pull me down
I'm through accepting limits
'Cause someone says they're so
Some things I cannot change
But 'til I try, I'll never know
Too long I've been afraid of
Losing love I guess I've lost
Well, if that's love, it comes at much too high a cost
I'd sooner buy defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye, I'm defying gravity
And you can't pull me down
Unlimited
My future is unlimited
And I just had a vision almost like a prophecy
I know it sounds truly crazy
True the vision’s hazy
But I swear someday I’ll be flying so high defying gravity
I’m flying high defying gravity
And you can’t pull me down
So if you care to find me
Look to the western sky
As someone told me lately
"Everyone deserves the chance to fly"
And if I'm flying solo
At least I'm flying free
To those who ground me
Take a message back from me
Tell them how I am defying gravity
I'm flying high, defying gravity
And soon, I'll match them in renown
And nobody in all of Oz
No wizard that there is or was
Is ever gonna bring me down
Bring me down!
Oh!

is this mixed with the wizard and i?

I remember buying the sheet music for Wicked in 2008 and it was written the same way as it's being sung here. Indeed to be a standalone song.
Omg but a part of her dress changes colors
It's wild to me that everyone thinks idina is elphaba. She doesn't hold a candle to Willemijn.
yeah almost like Idina is the originator of the role or something
@AllTheArtsy she is the original. Not the originator... and being the first doesn't make you the best. ^
So glad I am German so I never had to listen to Idina Menzel. Elphaba will allways be Willemijn Verkerk for me. So much warmth and strength in her voice, stunning
Lol well I'm not German but I still listen to both all the time haha
SAYCON
I thought this was filmed outside because of covidpalooza but it looks like it was recorded in 2014 - so why wasn't this filmed inside a theater?

Sounds a bit like Celine Dion
