Nobody else taught me how to use these fingerings on playing chromatic scales even method books I have used throughout the years. As I return to playing the saxophone after more than 10 years I will start from scratch and use all these fingerings. This is a REAL deal. Thanks.
Lovin it, Doc. BTW - If you find yourself trading licks with shredder guitarists.... they tend to have problems with chromatics. And another thing, the side keys sometimes cry out for the reverse Karate chop. Lastly, pro tip for older players: try to sync your chromatic side key runs with your Parkinson Tremers.
A couple suggestions, just my 2 cents: 1) Also do a 6-note pattern up and down, for triplet or 6/8 feel, or just for variety. 2) Do the whole pattern, or just parts, a half-step higher. The pattern creates a whole-tone scale rising Bb-C-D-E-F#-G# so those notes fall on the beats and get emphasized. Shift so that B-C#-D#-F-G-A are emphasized and you've really covered all the bases. 3) Practice smart! If you find a chromatic section in a piece or tune you're working on, select just that amount of this exercise to add to your daily warmup. As Dr. Wally says, there's no prize for doing the whole thing.
First time playing this with metronome set to 50 bpm without feeling ashamed. Can't play well or correct if I can't make out exactly at which range I play sloppy
Thanks Dr. Wally ! But the link provides a slightly different score: Page 43, ´Full Range Chromatic Patterns´ is very similar, but the section shown in 2:26 is absent from it... Also the ´s´ symbol over the notes is not shown in the score. I´m not complaining !!! ! Love your videos.
The lil' subsets aren't in there, that was a "suggested pattern" to pull from the chromatic pattern! Use the video in conjunction with the fundamentals book and you're good to go!
Thanks Doc. I've been using these key sequences for a while now, based on info I divined from your previous lessons. Smoov. Plus a good 10 to 20 percent more fun.
Dr Wally, The video couldn't be better, I'm having trouble with the chromatic passages in Demersseman's "Fantasie sur un thème original" at the moment so I need to practice. Thank you so much !
Dr. Wally, I have a question I'm pretty much teaching myself while watching your and other great saxophonists material. I know (from playing flute and clarinet) that some chromatic fingerings will work better depending on the melodic context... But I wanna know, when it comes to strictly practice the cromatic scales, should i always do the right side keys for Bb and C going UP, and doing "regular" fingerings when going down? Or how should it be?
Jaime from GYST: "WHOA, guys, check out this killer Cannonball lick!" Dr. Wally: "Use these efficient side key fingerings for this chromatic scale exercise." 😂 You're literally irreplaceable, Doc!
ha, thanks Chip! I just don't think I want to be the Mr. Beast of saxophone UA-cam. I nerd out, I come by it honestly. Hope you're having a great week!
Hey im a bassoonist and I started playing tenor sax about 8 months ago but I’m having a problem where I can’t stop slap tonguing. (I’m a freshman in highschool btw)
Congratulations, Kwootamuck Bear, you are now my youth cultural liaison! it's an unpaid position and involves answering endless questions about memes. Report to work tomorrow morning.
Note that around 1:13 Dr Wally plays the d with LK1
Man, it is incredible the ammount of accurate facts and methods Dr Wally gives away, while also being hilarious asf.
Well that just made my afternoon, thanks Carlos :)
im learning how to play chromatic scale either this thursday or next thursday i can't wait dr.wallace

You totally ROCK Wally !! Big Thanks for this !!!
As always, your presentation is excellent. I usually include chromatic exercises in my warm up. Thanks Dr Wally

Great tute, where do I get these scales? Thanks in advance😊
Picked up my alto after a 10 year "break". I have been loving your videos. Glad to be back playing!
Hey, that makes me happy!

Great advice as always, Dr. Wally!
Thanks Bruce, hope you're doing well. How's London life?
This is an excellent fundamentals lesson. Thank you Doc.
well thanks my friend, happy practicing!

Yay! Happy practicing Andy!
Your sound is very classical this time !
I should have mentioned, I do warmups and scale work on my classical setup! Good ear!

Fantastic! The Demersseman is such a fun piece, happy practicing my friend!

Another great excercise video. Thanks
Most welcome - happy practicing Jamie!
@@drwallysax is it in the saxophone fundamentals link, page 43, 44? Or a separate download. 43, 44 doesn't show the side key fingerings
@@jamiemcgoldrick3350 those are in this video, supplementing the exercise
Can someone send me the last year listening assignments?
FYI - your join academy link on the site isn't working.
Great video, thanks!
Should you use the side F# key when going down from G to Gb/F#?
yup!
@@drwallysaxThanks Dr Wallace! I always practiced it with the regular fingering, so more practice now.
Very nice!
Thanks Paul!
great!👍👍👍
thanks Neilo, happy practicing!

Good question, Carlos. I recommend doing the side key fingers ascending and descending!
Dr Wally, apart from the content of your vids, you rule on script, dixie (of your voice) and didacticism. 🎉🎉🎉
Do you recommend palm-key risers if you you have large alien fingers like I do?
If you find it helpful, absolutely. Lots of great aliens use them for their tentacle flanges!

but what YEAR is it?
Link does not go to Chromatic Scales pdf
I went to music school and got 40k into debt. Can confirm the fingering lmao (Is this a clasical setup tho? Sounds very classical today.)

Wow, this gives me flashbacks from college.
sometimes college gets it right ;)
ha ha, my canonball comes with two of those square keys...finger gymnastics!
Step by step! Little chunks!
Happy practicing, Rob :)
Is that a new horn, Dr Wally?
It's the Jean Paul I reviewed going on two years ago! Fun little horn.
@@drwallysax It looks great. Thanks for the chromatic exercises. I'll be trying these tomorrow.
Hi Dr Wallace - where can I find the pdf?
Hi Kim, it's in the "motions" in the Fundamentals book - download link in the video description!
@@drwallysax thank you, your videos are so much fun and helpful!
Lol little chunks. Wally blowing little chunks.
gotta have bite size chunkers.
👍🏾🎶🎵🎷
My cats and I care about the bassoon😼
Thor, you are the only bassoonist I care about. But let's not fork around with fingerings.
Ice Cube…check yourself before you wreck yourself…..and, something about; bad for your health. Imma go practice now😳🎶🎵🎷

As a Bassoon/Sax player I think I may be offended😜
I can live with that. (couple of dear friends are bassoonists)
But if you have nothing to play you want from others.
Who cares what bassoonist's do? Hahhahahahahahahahha
Very nice!
