I am really enjoying my Custom 91. I wanted an upgrade from my prera that was still light and super smooth--it fits the bill. I enjoy sketching with it.
Out of the box first inking with Diamine Red Dragon (Con-70 converter), as an owner of 27 other pens, I must joyfully agree the Pilot Custom Heritage 91 Soft Medium nib is the "perfect pen". I take a lot of notes and make many hand written drafts. This is the pen I have sought. Thank you for your review that convinced me to buy it.
i've learned to appreciate rhodium (silver) trim. Prefer it on clear demonstrators. I plan to do a retrospective & the 91 will be one of the always inked pens.
I'm glad to hear that one (at least) of your pens is perfect. I recently obtained its big brother, the 743 (FA), as I prefer the rounded ends, the ball clip, and the #15 nib. I might not call it perfect, but I do find that now there doesn't seem to be any point in my buying additional pens. Wait, this review is several years old. Is the 91 still perfect? Have you since discovered/acquired any other perfect pens?
Hi chris! This is my grail pen. I am saving up for this one. Its going to be my first gold nib and I want to try the Soft fine. Thanks for the great review. I only wish this had a demonstrator version.
I always like pens with flat tops and bottom. It's says classic and class to me. I have a Custom Heritage 912 and love it. Custom 70 is a big improvement on Pilot pens. I have one in my Pilot Kakuno as well.
Hi, Chris. I hope life finds you and yours healthy and happy, especially considering these tumultuous times we find ourselves in. Have you done a comparison of this pen, the Sailor 1911, and the Platinum 3776, and if you haven't would you consider doing so? I think that consumers, myself included, are torn between these 3 when looking for their first Japanese pen.
Interesting suggestion, I will consider the comparison. I do not consider the pens to be similar. They are Japanese 14k nib pens but have very different nibs & writing experience. They are also in many variations of colors & nib sizes. That said, I prefer the 91, has the best nib & ergonomics for me. Stay safe & healthy.
@@chrisrap52 Thank you, Chris. Yes, they are quite different from each other and why imho a review highlighting their differences would be very interesting and beneficial.
Thank you, Chris, for this review. I am trying to find this in the United States, and I realize you said that they did not sell this model here. But now since it’s been a few years, I’m wondering if any of the following models may be it? I have no idea. I am looking for the SM nib like you have. I have found the Pilot Custom 912; a Pilot Custom 823, Pilot Custom Heritage 92, and a Pilot Custom 74. I have no idea if any of these is the same pen. Thank you very much for your time.
The 74 is the same pen as the 91, just has rounded ends. The challenge is finding a SM nib. The other models are different in various ways. There are some SM nibs on Amazon, no 74s. Pilot doesn't sell all nibs for the 74 in US. eBay has some 91 & 74 SM pens from Japan. I bought pens that way, was OK. Hope you find one.
I got this pen, with the Soft Fine Medium, and just love it. It's beautifully soft and gives perfect line variation and writes a nice wet line. One of my favourites for sure! I had not trouble at all out of the box.
This looks like an excellent pen, Chris. I'm a fan of Pilot, but I've only their lower priced models so far. I also like a bit of feedback, but I've yet to feel the need to roughen a nib! At this price point, I'll likely buy this pen with the soft medium as it looks and performs beautifully in your review. Thank you. I look forward to your other reviews.

Hi Chris, great review, I'm looking to upgrade from my Pilot prera F nib which i love. I was wondering if you had any idea how the size of this compares to the prera, other than rodium plating are the nibs the same?

Just snagged one of these used on eBay I was really nervous about buying a used pen as this pen is WAY more than any writing instrument I have ever purchased. I can't wait to get it though, this will be my first "real" pen as in next level pen. I've never spent anything over $40 on a pen until now. I just got this on used for $62 so I think thats a decent deal. It has a Soft Fine nib. Your video was a large factor in my decision as it was between this and the custom 74 but the 74 I didn't care for the transparent versions and I like flat ends more. I did like the black and gold trim more but I think this 91 will be a better daily writer thats not to over stated.
