There's a fun parallel I don't think the show ever really drew attention to: Ditzy goofball Hurley is the one who had his shit together arguably moreso than anyone, while rugged survivalist Locke, who was always going on about greater purpose and dispensing sage wisdom to anyone who asked... very much did not.

    • @f_mili_r
      @f_mili_r 5 місяців тому +29

Definitely. Especially so when considering how both ascended to their leadership roles. Locke even said it to Jack himself in s1e5 (White Rabbit) that “A leader can’t lead til he knows where he’s going,” yet Locke hardly ever knew where he was going. Yet Hugo, someone who went so long with people not believing in him, including himself, ends up in the most powerful position of leadership by the end of the series and, to no surprise, is the best person for the job.

In a tech and cultural landscape where TikTok videos are shortening everybody's attention spans and Short form content is the norm, to be able to do a series of long-form content and keep people's attention and interest growing says everything about a Creator's skill and dedication to their craft. Talking about all the references in the show, Lost made me read Slaughterhouse 5, by Kurt Vonnegut. In the episode where Michael tries to kill himself in his car, hes sitting at home beforehand watching Jeopardy or Wheel of fortune, and on the tv, you hear a contestant call out Slaughterhouse 5.
For those that dont know, slaughterhouse 5 is a surreal world war 2 fiction about a man who gets abducted by aliens, but 1 singular page references an alien whose only purpose, and sole reason for existing, is to push a button. If he doesnt push the button continuously forever, the entire universe ceases to exist/instantly comes to an end.
Fucking crazy literary reference to throw in a 3 second scene of somebody watching tv. This show is truly amazing.

    • @billiam

honestly, the really wacky audio desynching around 1:33:30 (?) really just intensifies the feeling of panic and desperation. i know it's not intentional, but having these scenes intercut such that the visuals are distinct and separated but all the audio is crashing together and overlapping itself gives the impression of time travel, of everything happening at different times but still all at once, and it feels appropriately stressful. dammit, the billiam crew is so good at making videos that even the mistakes are kind of genius lmao

      well…
The whole nuke / time travel conceit was born in those original TPOTA movies from
The 60s/70s. 1st instance of a time paradox / nuclear holocaust combo in pop culture that I know of. Safe to say Darlton and JJA et al must’ve seen these as kids and been deeply impressed.
The Jughead comes right out of the subway nuke in Beneath, that’s made clear in so many ways if you know how to look for the clues. Conceptually, this is really ‘the bomb’, something that deserves its own separate essay.
Also, the Others-Dharma conflict has a slew of visual elements from Apes v Humans. E.g. the Others campaign on horseback, using bolos, nets etc just like the apes did.
Whole question of who is superior, more advanced, the hypocrisy within each group draws heavily from TPOTA.
Sawyer without a shirt is Taylor (Chuck Heston) without a shirt in mthe 1st & 2nd movies.

The man has the softest hands ever. Like pillows :) I also got to meet Sayid (Naveen Andrews) at his Bollywood movie premiere. All this was during the airing of the show. It was also amazing attending the producers interviews, and the LOST museum in NYC. What an AMAZING time!

I enjoy the unspoken acknowledgment of the hilariously melodramatic previews you've been showing throughout each part. They take a series that actually isn't that soap opera-ish (sure, it is at parts, but not to a crazy degree) and turn it up to 11 with the SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY wrestling-ass VO guy booming over all those out of context clips from the show. Every single episode preview becomes the most insanely overwrought schlock in the world. If I had seen these back in the day without context, it would have seriously colored my view of the show itself. It literally seems like a parody of this type of show, at times. No wonder it provoked so many memes back in the day. But It clearly worked, and played no small part in the final product being what it is.

I think it's telling that her "awakening" moment in limbo was helping Claire deliver Aaron. Being co-moms with Claire was her best ending.

Daniel's realization that he needs to try is quite interesting. He views the entire thing as deterministic until he starts finding these little breadcrumbs that a future him would have a different outlook. Ultimately he finds out that he told the redhead to leave the island and never come back. The kind of thing that the current him wouldn't even consider bothering to do.
So what we were seeing as the characters started to bleed from the nose and ultimately dying is their body trying to reconsile the paradox of their existence.
The last scene of her life. The scene where she reveals that daniel talked to her as a child. In a sense Daniel KILLED her by telling her to leave. By telling her to leave, he set up a paradox where she remembered him and didn't remember him. She's stuck in one body though and the brain ultimately strokes out.
If he didn't tell her to leave, she might not have died. (she still might have, the characters basically assume it boils down to "time on the island"). And if she didn't die, he wouldn't have had the justification to see himself beg her to leave as a child, as by that point he had lost a lot of himself to his cover as a Dharma Mechanic. The aged, jaded, and sad Daniel, begs the confused child to leave and never come back, and in the future, that realization kills her as an adult, and Daniel sees the whole thing.
So Daniel realizes he's bootstrapped himself into a new existence because he got to that point and realized that his actions in the past CAN have great rammifications on the actions of the future, He's living proof of it. He knows as he tells her to leave that he's following his own footsteps knowingly, but in that moment he has free will. He could NOT tell her. But the Present Daniel and the Past Daniel that the dying woman remembers are the same. They have to try to save her, and in doing so, kill her.
But Daniel knows that in that moment he could have not told her. He chose to tell her. Again. Because he wanted to. Because he believed that this time, with this foreknowledge, it might work. And then when he's killed by his own mother, it assures him that he's right, because he knew that she was a genius and wouldn't forget something as important as killing her own son. So he knew she raised him knowing full and well that she would one day send him on a mission that would send back in time, knowing that she would kill him in her past, because she remembered doing it.
...... I too can talk at length about lost.

Lost, The Terminator (1984), and Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban are my favorite uses of time travel in fiction. I've always loved the idea that if someone can go back in time, whatever they did back then results in the same exact present the person that went back in time trying to change. If you go back in time to kill your parents, not only can you not succeed, you could be part of the events that lead to your parents meeting in the first place.

One small correction 5:48:34 It was not the Holy Roman Empire that outlawed paganism, because HRE was created at the beginning of 9th century by Charlemagne and it later turned into Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation - the First Reich, it ruled over much of modern Germany (i.e. we later had the Hitler's Third Reich). Paganism in the ancient, original Roman Empire was gradually banned after 313 when for the first time Rome had a Christian emperor. So Roman Empire and Holy Roman Empire - two different things :) love the video, just wanted to add a tiny detail

The amount of work you have put into this series is unbelievable, and I will never be able to truly complement every great thing you’ve done here. But I just wanna know people like you are what keeps the fandom alive and growing. I appreciate all your hard work and love the passion you display for the show.
From one fan to another, these videos are a treat

I absolutely love Billiam doing this. I’ve been watching these as they come out and it’s introduced me to lost. I was only aware of it as a thing that we didn’t watch and I was too small to care about. Now I’ve learned so much more and it’s entertaining

I rewatched LOST a couple months ago with my wife who had never seen it. It quickly became her favorite show and I’m glad that it is getting more respect now than it did when it was airing. Truly an unbelievable show.

I've always thought that the death of Locke in this season was a huge mistake on the part of the writers. I feel like such a great character deserved to make it to the last season. he didnt deserve such a pathetic and sad ending.

Daniel Faraday was easily one of my favourite characters in the show. The ending of his story is so sad

I love Season 5 unabashedly. Recontextualizing characters we've grown to love over the curse of four seasons? And they do it brilliantly! Everyone is on their A-game here, we're finally getting LOADS of answers! LOVE IT!
