    Nothing wrong with taking longer on math!!! It’s awesome that Sophie can do it independently!!! Creative writing and literature is language arts in my state!!! It’s awesome that she’s ready better!!! We loved the physical body unit and the Marnie biology unit!!! It’s awesome that Katie is going to be a junior in college!!! My kids won’t drink water but I allow them to put fruit juice in their water bottles!!! I don’t stay with my older daughter with her speech therapy but I trust her and stay in the waiting room just incase I’m needed!!! I won’t tell my kids that we aren’t doing anything if I’m not sure!!! We love being close to the beach now and we often go to the blue mountains!!!

    Please follow your instincts and stay with Sophie. The world does try to break those parental bonds these days, but God ordained you as her parent. I'm so proud of her for asserting her wishes in that situation. Katie is breezing right through, summer school is an impressive choice!

      Thank you! 💕 I always do, for the reasons I mentioned. Also she’s much younger functionally than her chronological age, which makes it harder for adults to relate to her. I was very surprised she spoke up this time.

    Good for you staying with Sophie during speech class! You are so right about separating the child from the parent. I love watching your videos. So many great tips! And the wild life. Blue heron!! Texas is warming up, we are going to the gulf this weekend, which should be great.

    I don’t drop my daughter off for therapy. I stay with her. Luckily we can still do speech via zoom and that has made things easier. Regression is a constant battle but school year round with shorter breaks makes it more manageable. My daughter has autism.

      We did speech over zoom for almost 2 years and because of the therapist we had, she made more progress with that than with the in person therapy we do now. She loved being able to stay home. We do yeast round school as well and it’s a big help! We are going to take about 3 weeks off in May and then start 3 day weeks in June through most of the summer.

    A.C.E is a great curriculum. I’ve considered doing with Noah if he gets to truly reading. We are 1 light unit in to Christian Light Learning to read and it’s been very good! We start there math tomorrow for the rest of the year and pick back up in fall.

    My 8 year old has special needs (Prader Willi Syndrome), and we do a lot of private therapy (4x week - 5 sessions). We switched clinics at the beginning of the year due to them dropping our insurance, and I do now stay with her. As long as I am not a big distraction, I think it helps with some things. I used to use the therapy time to get my shopping done, but this clinic has less shopping nearby. Also, the sessions are only 45mins vs about 55min at the previous clinic. I can sometimes "translate" what she is saying and be a bit more firm on her behavior than a therapist usually wants to be. I also can sometimes suggest toys or activities that I feel would help her as she often just wants to play. As far as ACE, I believe Word Building and English are usually required for Language Arts. The Literature/Creative Writing as well as the Bible Reading are the electives. These two subjects are often used a grade behind as they are more advanced than the other subjects. I think they are used in ACE schools for kids that finish their other subjects too quickly. Also, the Social Studies and Science are more like the readers in the early elementary grades. We switch between CLE, ACE, and TGATB for Language Arts. If she gets stuck, we change things up. ACE math (1st grade) did not work for us as she is having trouble learning her math facts. We have tried so many maths. We are back to CLE as they do a new fact each day. Rod and Staff was okay, but there were too many facts at once with the fact families. I think this is my first comment, but I really look forward to your videos. Jeslynn (8 year old) loves to see Sophie doing her school work!

    • @simplejoyfilledliving
      @simplejoyfilledliving  Рік тому

      I do think that’s why many therapists prefer to have the child alone (so the parent isn’t a distraction). This is a valid concern and with Sophie it’s easily overcome by me sitting behind her. I agree though-there far more benefits for the therapy process with the parent in the room since we know our children so well.
      I appreciate your input on ACE. I have to frequently change things up for Sophie as well to overcome being stuck.

    Where do you purchase your ACE paces? I was looking into the world building but the webstore on the website has the smallest samples. I looked at Christian book but they had no samples to look inside either.
    When I took my oldest to speech I wouldn't go into the room but they had a watch room that was behind class where you could see but they couldn't see you. I found that to be really nice.

    • @simplejoyfilledliving
      @simplejoyfilledliving  Рік тому +1

      I get them on Christian Book. To see the samples you have to look at an individual booklet. If you look. At English Grade 2 for instance, they will show you pictures of the covers of each one instead of the inside.

    Hi Colleen..thank you for always brightening up my day. We all have our moments...our days. None of us are exempt from having a tough or challenging day..but PTL we have Jesus to go thru those times with us. So proud of Katie and Sophie in making big strides in their studies. And..bless your heart for following your momma instincts and going in with Sophie. Sadly we never know what "could" happen or take place when it comes to who is caring for or teaching our children and grandchildren. So I support you 100% in following your heart. And kudos to Sophie as well. I have been on the struggle bus for about a month or so with the weight loss journey. I am thinking of seeing a nutritionist. I just finished ten days of steroids and two weeks of antibiotics and have been so tired since having this upper respiratory virus . My system is really in need of a overhaul. WW closed all of the workshops in our area, so I canceled my membership. Just downloaded the Healthi app..wish me well 🙏. The beach looked so beautiful and peaceful..the wildlife as well. We had snow here in Michigan today..only 40 degrees so the beach looked amazing!! Thanks again for sharing your home..your family and the Joy of Jesus. God bless you all. Linda

Take care ...may we keep our eyes on Jesus. ❤

    They should not ask her, they should ask you. I would be frustrated too.
    My son is in speech. He went for a while when he was 4. I was told I could stay in the room if I wanted, I loved that therapist and felt confident with him in her care for that 30 minutes. But had I been challenged in any way about going in the room with him I do think I would have spoken up and let them know I wasn’t ok with that pressure.
    He’s now back in speech at age 11, just working on pronouncing R’s. This office is small and I have been letting him go to the room with his therapist while I am in the waiting room. So far the rooms he’s been in have been within an ear shot. But I would not “drop him off” and not be close by. And honestly, if his speech need was more advanced like Sophie’s where I felt he wouldn’t be understood or he may be more uncomfortable I absolutely would go with him in the room. There is no reason not to. If the child acts out because the parent is in the room, then there may need to be a discussion. But other than that, I see no reason to pressure a parent to stay out of the room.

      There seems to be more and more instances where parents and children are separated now. We left that’s therapist after talking with the pediatrician. We’re taking a break now and starting back with her former therapist in August.

    Colleen I don’t blame you at all for wanting to stay with Sophie or Sophie for wanting you with her. Our situation is different but my daughter generally wants me to stay with her at appointments. Between being 80% deaf, cognitive/processing issues, and anxiety she struggles despite being 25. I wish more people understood. If I or Ellie aren’t comfortable with the situation it’s a no go. I think people assume we are being over protective but we know our kids.

      It’s tough when even the medical people can’t understand our reality. Sophie is 11 but functions between about age 4-6 depending on the circumstances. Expectations of others and reality are rarely the same.

    • @Stacey_95
      @Stacey_95 Рік тому

      Ellie functions at approximately a 12 year old level at this point. Sometimes she is higher functioning than others. Stress and exhaustion play a huge factor. Ellie will often go along with or agree with others to make them happy or simply because she didn’t hear them and and doesn’t want to admit to it. She suffers from short term memory loss as well. It’s hard. We have had to step in at times when others are clearly taking advantage of Ellie’s kindness. You are Sophie’s best advocate and it’s clear in your Vlogs that you want nothing but the best for her.

    On speech, go with your gut. They say not having parents in with the child will encourage the child to talk…lololol BUT still they hold know the kiddo first and with her at least be able to understand. You could suggest sitting outside the door on a chair.

      Sophie would shut down without me in the room in this particular case. With previous speech therapists that I trusted and so did she, she would’ve been ok. I’m going to discuss with our pediatrician how much longer we need to continue with speech.
