Thanks for taking the time to create this video. It's all very interesting, good work. One thing that often seems skirted around or missing even, in a lot of local history information is info or even a mention of the Anglo-Saxon/Early English settlements and further English history which always seems odd as the English are now a settled community for approx one thousand six hundred years since approx 449AD and so more info on our roots in the city and some further English history would be very much appreciated. Local history in most cases seems to go Roman, (skirt around or miss out Anglo-Saxon/Early English) Viking, Normans, Edwardian, Victorian etc etc I would love to see someone address this maybe? (I would but have ill health until I get an operation) The Lady of the Mercians (Lady Ethelflaeda) one of the most famous females in our history was not mentioned and seems hidden history despite a small statue of her existing in the garden area of The Guildhall and the Midlands Revolt of 1607 later on had a connection with Leicester city with a curfew and a gibbet put in place in Leicester City. But well done with all the work and research you put in for this video. It is appreciated.

Really good videos, quality, educational, well narrated. Next time I am in Leicester I will be walking these areas again with a better understanding of Leicesters significance! I grew up in Belgrave and my mums side of the family (Vann) also has some interesting history in that area (Belgrave Hall).

But so many memories of my childhood and how it used.to look and the comparison with now , which I have to say is not for the better in my lifetime. I recognise it all and have been to a lot of the places you mentioned and knew a little of it's history but I never realised the was such a deep history to my hometown. I thought I knew most of Leicester'a history but apparently not. I grew up just off Tudor Road so alot of the places shown were my playground. This was great and so interesting. Thank you
Always pleased to see a positive view of our City and of those areas less trodden by many residents. I have since my youth, and I still do (before Covid), wandered those areas, some now derelict and/or under construction . Always interested in the Newarkes area in particular as my favourite part of Leicester. We have so much history to share for people who might stray off the beaten tracks of the shopping and commercial areas. I've watched Leicester evolve over the decades. Some recent changes to our historic are very good and attract tourism and some modern changes are perhaps less worthy. Local history has always been of more interest to me than national because of my connection with Leicester. A great piece of documentary evidence. Very well edited and presented and do like the addition of the background music which adds ambience and atmosphere.
A fascinating look at how Leicester has changed in the last 2,000 years. I really enjoyed this Jim and it was great to document what Leicester is like under the lock down. We could actually hear you over the traffic and that doesn't happen often in Leicester! Looking forward to more....

As somebody who has spent threee years in Leicester for university, it's was a shame to find out that the saracens succesfully invaded and conquered Leicester, they should of kept the defences in place!
Turret gateway built 1422 just like that, no explanations as to how it was built in such an early time period baffles me and I never get any answers 😮 love this great job
I do happen to know that there's a massive intact Roman mosaic in the centre of Doen Lounge on the corner in churchgate, was under an older dancefloor, fully intact. Can't say how I know but it's 100% there 👍🏼

I was particularly delighted to see you in Butt Close Lane, while not a nice occurrence, my 4th Great Grandmother died on that corner you stood in 1830 !

Her husband had deserted her years earlier and remarried, he was a gunsmith in Belgrave Gate, who a couple of years later shot himself - so very tragic :/ I have collated all newspaper articles & written it all up as part of my family tree research
Really enjoyed this .. some familiar areas and some not so. Not sure about graffiti central, but lots of good info .. in particular about the word ‘gate’ 👍👍
The graffiti is only a temporary measure in an area of much construction. I have watched the artists doing their individual work some days and while it isn't always to my own taste, it is more colourful to look at than plain wooden hoardings. As the buildings go up, so these artworks will come down. Like them or not, they too are a part of the fabric of our ever evolving city development and no doubt, some particularly well done pieces may end their days in an art gallery setting.
Regarding the church built outside of city walls, many early church were built on pagan worship sites. There are many churches in Britain that are oddly located, later research has found that cover a pagan site such as well or hidden spring.
Hi Michael, as far as we know there is no pagan site associated with St Margaret’s church, which is located just a few hundred metres from the River Soar. I suspect, with the areas to the immediate west and north of the town being prone to flooding by the river and with Saxons already established within the former Roman town walls and just to the south of them, this area just to the north-east, which runs beside the former Fosse Way to Lincoln and further into the Danish-held territory, was probably a convenient and comfortable spot to live and trade with the town.

the many times great grandfather of my leicester ancestry who was the original bearer of the name leicester may have been a frenchman or french descent from a french family who moved to leicester, and then he became leicester cause he lived there, so the family name became leicester, over time leycester, and then lester just a theory copying the general story / origin of how my gresham family originated (as far as I think)
