- Feline-Head Bottle, 15th-5th century B.C.E., Cupisnique, Jequetepeque Valley (possibly Tembladera), Peru, ceramic and post-fired paint, 32.4 x 20.5 x 13.3 cm (The Metropolitan Museum of Art) Speakers: Dr. Sarahh Scher and Dr. Steven Zucker. Created by Beth Harris and Steven Zucker.
Wow, this is absolutely fascinating. I'd love to know more about this time and place, so mystical and beautiful
I definitely underestimated this piece. The "multiplicity of forms" was surprising. I read the creature on the right differently to Dr. Zucker and perhaps it was meant to be experienced that way. Dr. Scher's summary of it - being possibly a shamanic vision, etc - at the end put a fine point on just how transcendent it is despite its great age.
I'd cosign that other form being a caiman, btw. I see the scales and length of its face. 😋
amazing Peru as always is candyland for archeologists
I have to many of the museums in Lima. It is just amazing. Before my visit I have been to many American Museum exhibits of Ancient Peruvian Art and read many books as well, however, I never saw so much diversity and brilliance until I went to the Lima Museums. Just amazing.
I found this because I was searching for cats with jars/bottles stuck on their heads
Abso-friggin'-lutely fascinating! Thank you!
Thank you very much!
Great!
The stone sculpture of the god "Chavin Lanzon Monolithic" has the same characteristics.
This is not reptilian at all. The snout is rounded and it has round ears.
Looks like an... elephant. But they couldn't know about elephants, couldn't they?
Have you guys decided to avoid showing paintings these days? Your focus has started to lean towards artefacts from obscure ancient communities which I suspect may not have the same general appeal!!
Interesting tact though; guaranteed to lose viewers: well at least one.
So long.
Go be a puaper pleb somewhere else.
NickPenlee bye Felicia! Bye! 🤗
Some artists like myself love ancient Indigenous American Cultures. Very beautiful and highly skilled art. I am a professional painter and I understand that there is more to art than painting.
Bye!
