Amazing Growth of Mango Trees in Extreme Heat in California (Wow)

- Filming an update on the two mango trees that are growing in the urban garden, Glenn Mango and Manila Mango. Other names for these mango trees are Glenn and Philippine mangoes.
I am just amazed at how much growth there is with the newly planted mango trees, especially that California is currently in an extreme heat wave. I am not covering these mangoes with shade cloth at all and they are not just doing fine but pushing huge growth. They are amazing subtropical and tropical fruit trees to grow here in Central California, USDA Zone 9b.

Stockton, CA here. About a year ago, I bought a $1,400 mango tree at a tropical nursery in Richmond, CA because I wanted a more mature tree. It fruited in August. Today it continues thriving and growing vigorously.
That is awesome to hear!
West coast Mangos UNITE! 🥭🥭
I got mahachanok which variety do you have?
@@fluffypenguin6695 I grew orange sherbet in Washington State
It was 120 today in Saudi Arabia
I have three mango trees and they are doing great!!!
That’s great! Which varieties, do you know?
I’m in California I just started two and can’t wait to see if they make it
They did well
Thanks for the video. I live in bakersfield Ca and want to grow mangos. Thanks for giving me hope ha.
I have 3 multi grafted mango tree in SoCal on Manila rootstock: Maha Channok, Keo Savoy, Cat Hoa Loc, Pickering, Sweet Tart, Pim Saen Mun, Brahm Kai Meu, Lemon Zest.
They are pretty easy once it's established. Just need really well drain soil and not alot of watering.
Just found your chanel from the twice stabbed lady beetle video, I see your videos are very well put together and edited, keep up the great work, and I hope your chanel pops off soon, you deserve it!
Well thank you, but even if I can change one person’s life by teaching them about health and growing food that’s fine. If I had cared about the numbers I would’ve quit almost 4 years and 950 videos ago
Nice mango plants you have. Please keep us an update on your mango trees. I have almost 2 years old mango plant in the pot and is getting tall. I think I should planting in the ground already but I didn’t because the mango is still growing and looking good on the pot;)
I am definitely going to keep the community up to date on these two mango trees
4:00 You are right! I just started making videos about mango trees since here in the Bay Area of Sn Francisco in my more than twenty years living here i just seen two mango trees and just one of them survived the challenging whether of this area between Redwood city ca to Palo Alto ca.
What a beautiful mango trees you have ! 😍
Mangoes are actually a lot easier to grow than I thought
@@ZaatarGardens It’s easy by south California but by at north close to Sn Francisco it’s a real challenge 😁!
I’m central CA
@@ZaatarGardens I believe that from central to south California is easier than north Ca. :)
You’re lucky!
Trying my first mango in East San Bernardino
Awesome I’m in Fresno our trees are growing and give fruit in August
That’s awesome, do you know which varieties they are and how old?
I’m in Fresno and thinking of ordering a Carrie mango tree. Any tips?
Never tried the Manila variety of mango. I’ve recently planted an entire section of my orchard with mangos. 16 different varieties in total now, most less than a year old, but my Glenn is 4 and the mangos are pretty good. Maybe my favorite varieties are the Coconut Cream, Orange Sherbet and Lemon Meringue. Can’t wait for them to bear fruit!
See that sounds amazing! those specialty mangoes you just listed NO WAY can we grow that in our location as far as I know the two that I’m growing are the only ones you can grow successfully.
philippines mangoes are the best in the world but i dont know if thats the same with manila mango
Stay safe! Here in Fort Worth, Texas my mango trees did well in the winter but as soon as the weather outside got warm and the climate control inside kicked the thermostat to the cold side, the mangos weren't willing to compromise. I should have taken them outside but it was already too late. The damage was done.
Wow that must’ve been one heck of a shock to the trees and plants!
I just ordered a glenn mango on etsy and a blue Java banana tree tonight. I want tropical fruits in my yard. I'm zone 9b socal, its gonna be a little, but I'm gonna try and try again until I have my own mangoes! They're the best fruit, and I want to experience picking my own in my yard. You never see mango or banana in this area, and I think it would be so cool.
With this heavy rainfall, the glenn mango didn’t make it, but the Manila is coming back. The Glenn Mango also struggled while the weather was great for the past three years, but the excessive rain pushed it to its edge.
Im growing a mango plant from seed since April 2021 here in florida and its about 94° and it has about 3 sets of leaves but its old leaves are starting to dry out and fall off i water it when the soil dries out a little but i keep it moist not drowning and also wondering when i should prune it or if its pruneing its old leaves on its own also its windy on my balcony plenty of shade but also plenty of sun so i just drag the pot away from the railing when it rains to avoid over watering but I am amazed that its even grew this
I'm in the south central valley and ha e started with mango, avocado and banana trees in my back yard. Some are potted and have moved in doors for the winter. Thinking of recording my tree journey
How is your Tree Journey going?
Those seem a little tall. I was told to chop them around 12” then they will branch out and keep doing that to new branches as they grow
Where in the Central Valley did you buy the mango trees?
Very nice! How about an update vid?
Mangoes love the heat. The hotter the better. Grow in India with 45C (120F?) With humidity. High night temperatures even better. Glenn tends to be slower in temperate climates from my experience but more cold tolerant. Never remove leaves from the rootstock just shoots. Best to go for stronger growth seedlings (polyembronic true to type is best but probably get a decent tasting fruit from a monoembronic) I wouldn't plant or prune a tree until late spring after the last chance of frost and continously warm. The tip protects the point. Pruning/exposes the upper branch to any frost early in the growing season. Check out Gary Gragg. He's in central California. Found one growing in the north at 38 degress. Another in Spain. Shows the microclimates. Has a palm nursery and grows advanced stock.
Thanks for the tips! The mangoes did just fine in this winter. Much easier to grow then avocados (which I have been growing for a very long time). Wish I had planted Mangoes years ago.
Very nice mango's I am wondering where you have got them PLS tell me where you got the Manila and Glenn variety I live in central California.
Lowe’s
I agree on grafted mangos. In the Philippines people just plant seeds to grow mangos in the yard which is what I am doing here. I tried a grafted Pickering and although it flowered it never grew.
Three years in ground, the grafted variety grows a lot slower than the one that’s a seedling
Pickering is a dwarf variety. Dwarfs need to be on a super active rootstock to get any growth out of them on the west coast. Our climate doesn't allow it to flourish like in FL. Pickering especially needs to be on something vigorous like corriente, Valencia pride, lemon mirenge, Saigon etc
@@thehuntfortruth Yes, Tropical Central Valley believes Manilla rootstock could help with these Florida varieties. I have no doubt that Terpentine rootstock doesn't do well in Cal. I am just growing Manillaa from seeds now and they are thriving!
In short, adjusting the water pH from 8 (tap water) down to 6.4pH has dramatically improved the health of my mango trees (LAX area). My trees seem to now have the ability to cope with morning dew and night time cold temperatures better. The growth internods are longer than before the pH adjustment.
Looking forward to see how the Mangos deal with the winter.
Forgot to ask - where did you purchase the two mangos?
So am I

The tropical garden guy and Tropical Central Valley are 2 UA-cam who have mangos
Thanks!
I have a seed mango and it’s growing nice I live in Newman ca
That’s awesome. I love hearing other mango growers and their experiences.
What part of Central California are you living Zaatar?, i am in Lakewood, thank you.
Fresno
I’m got a few going. But they are struggling. I also have avocados but they’re easier. Every time I transplant my mango seedling into the soil it goes through shock and loses its leaves. They grow back but still not getting much bigger
mine love Blood Meal
Where can I buy grafted mango trees in central California?
I got it from Lowe’s
I am in Los Angeles. Growing several mango trees. It's less about 6 months old. If you send me your email I'll send you photos. You can grow mango from seeds in pot but you still need to take the pot outside for sun because mango trees love the sun and take it inside during winter so it would survive the cold weather and grow.
They survive three days of frost and are growing currently there are large mango trees here as well but they are grown by people that are extremely good gardeners well respected
Any tips for me on my mango trees? I've got 3 and I'm hoping that they thrive. How often are you watering and feeding them? I'm in Riverside Ca
Foliar feed with seaweed and fish emulsion, don’t water too often and white wash young green bark
Thank you for the information really appreciate all feed back
You’re welcome
Interesting. How old is your mango plant ?
As of right now just over a year old (in the ground) the two of them
this looks like a philippines backyard with moringa , mangio, papaya and avocado haha
And Atis - Cherimoya as well
I just purchased a SIndhri mango tree which is one of the best varieties available in Pakistan. The tree is about 2ft tall and most of the leaves fell off within three days as it developed mildew due to the heat and humidity in the mailing box. I really don’t want to send it back and would appreciate any advice you could give me on how to take care of it. Thank you!
Foliar spray (spray the leaves) with seaweed or kelp extract. Natural fungicide, hormones, vitamins and minerals
Hey man I’m located here in Victorville CA it was just 104 and I have a brand new mango tree I just got 4 days ago , I put some citrus fertilizer and replanted in a bigger pot and my mango trees about 4 feet tall but a lot of the leaves started to brown is that because of the sun burning them ? Or the fertilizer I put in ?
I’m pretty sure it was the scorching sun cuz it mainly on one side only of the tree
Yes, put afternoon shade. I did for the first year
@@ZaatarGardens thank you ! I did today since wits over 100 again and the other leaves haven’t burnt so I’m glad , will the leaves that burnt a bit to back to green or are they dead ?
If it died all the way back to the stem then yes the leaf is dead but it’s OK it’ll flush out so much new growth since it has afternoon shade now and you should be watering it more than once a week especially that it’s newly planted
By the way, I was stationed for a very short time in the Armory you guys have there
At what temperature do you protect your mango trees?
In it’s first three years of life I’m going to protect it under 42°
Zaatar Gardens wow didn’t know 40s we’re still dangerous
It was just planted in spring and I don’t want to take any risk but I’ll show you a video right now where I planted it in one week later with dip down to 35 and nothing happened. I want to ensure these trees grow big and strong in the first three years of life

Zaatar Gardens thanks for this info I planted 3 mango trees this year, relatively big size. my zone is 10a I live out in Los Angeles area.
What type of soil are they planted in
Native soil, charcoal (soaked in fish emulsion for 24 hours), bone meal. I do not want to give it anything special because I want to encourage its roots to grow out (not staying in a very nice potting soil in the ground) and they are still doing fine and we’ve had days of frost
What type of native soil do you have. I have clay soil. I was thinking about getting a couple mango trees but I want to make sure the will survive in clay or not
I had the worst possible soil it was almost hard as concrete and over the years of laying down wood chips and fish/seaweed fertilizer, it has made the soil so much softer & healthier. here is one of my videos demonstrating and comparing that.

Thanks for the reply. It was really helpful
I’m glad I hope it all works out my best advice is get one plant it because you may regret it one day that you didn’t plant it.

That’s awesome, do you know the varieties?
Mango plant of this height is of 2 dollars in Pakistan.
Wow that’s awesome!!!
Update on your mangoes please
Many more videos of mango on the channel, one uploaded today
