All in all, this was an interesting and well produced video. Picking and placing the counterweights was interesting, for sure, with that camera perspective. It was a little, just plain fun, watching the lift negotiate the mud. I admired the smooth and competent way y'all used the 2 cranes to stand the silos up. I have seen a lot of videos in which one crane, would lose a strap, or overreach, or something similar, and both cranes would flip. Not good at all. Thanks.

As a crane op myself, I can tell you right now that no license or school will make you a good crane operator. It's all about seat time. The more experience you get under your belt then the better operator you will be. It comes with time. After a few years in the cab and getting experience with different types of jobs you'll be swinging the boom easily also. BOL bud.

@@tricallyourmama advice… we’ll I’ll ask some questions. Do you have a crane cert? If not i think looking into a trucking company that also has some cranes would be an easy transition. Most are non union but personally i think it’s easier to get the crane cert when you work somewhere that you can play with cranes. The written test anyone can study and pass but just like your CDL it takes time behind the wheel or in the seat of a crane to get familiar with the operation. AQS Guzman Coast crane. Are a few trucking companies that come to mind. If your ballsy and are a quick learner you could pay for a corse “getcranecertified” dot come is run by a guy i know. You may need to spend some extra money to get seat time before the test. Anyway once you have a cert i recommend putting your name on the local union “out of work list” you pay about $25 bucks a month in person to maintain your name on the list. As companies need labor the call from the list and eventually your turn will come up. The apprenticeship is a good option for younger guys that can handle the pay cut if they are coming from journeyman wage level out of another trade. Pay rate is in the 50s for journeyman local 12. I also have a class b to drive the mobile boom truck. I wanted to ask, I want to join a union. So you said if one has the crane license, you can apply to be on that list? Do you need a ton of experience before you get called to work? Do you even need experience?

Just like anything else, the more you experience and do something the better you get at it. Obviously you need some common sense also because I've worked alongside other operators who have their license and certs and have been operating for years and the lack of common sense makes them bad operators. Well, Im Canadian and have my redseal mobile crane, and I would suggest first starting off with your class 1, then calling up your local IUOE for an apprenticeship. Dont think you're going to jump on a 300 Ton AT for awhile haha lots of 2nd manning, and if you prove yourself, you will get there.

On some cranes we do, because they whip around badly. This liebherr rides so smoothly that I never felt the need to lash it to the front of the crane. I’ve never seen it written as a requirement per DOT but I may be mistaken.

Sometimes, yes. There are allowable configurations that allow us to maneuver around the job site with weights hanging, but you have to be on flat, level and compacted ground. It really depends on the job site. If it’s muddy or unlevel ground I will usually undeck the counterweights.
There is an anemometer at the boom tip that measures wind speed. Then it tells you on the computer what the allowable wind speed is for the configuration that the crane is in currently 👍🏽
A lot... I'm a licensed crane operator in NJ/NY/PA tri state area and I get paid very very well. I'll leave it at that. Lots of liability on the line that you're responsible for as the crane op so comes with the territory

I am a union operating engineer and I can honestly say I hate everything about cranes lol. I don’t see why so many people, especially those who aren’t operators, think they’re so cool. It’s insanely boring and slow moving. Give me dirt work or sewer and water any day!!
I'm a crane op and I love my job.. very well paid and enjoy what I do. To each their own though, right? As long as you're paid very well and enjoy your job then can't ask for much more than that.

Depends but I make 36 an hour plus 50 bucks a day per-diem and quarterly safety bonuses.

I would say middle of the road. I know guys at my company that are in the 40-42 range that run 350-550 ton cranes. I run 110-275 ton cranes.

They are middle of the road all around in my opinion. Nice machines. Way better than terex/zoom lion but not on the level of tadano/liebherr.
