I was there! ( This track is from Music inc Live At Slug's Vol. One ). I was down there three times that week. Tolliver and Cowell's cooperative group Music Inc was one of the heaviest groups of its era even if not the most widely recognized, and this version, the original Music Inc with Cecil McBee and Jimmy Hopps was the pinnacle of their collaborations and for that matter one of the pinnacles of straight ahead post bop groups period. The compositions of Tolliver Cowell and McBee, the passion of Tolliver, the incredibly rich and detailed colors of Cowell's keyboard backdrops and the energy and drive of Hopps and McBee pushing the band - the whole thing was almost beyond compare. To this day I've never heard anything to surpass it at least not within its genre
This popped up on my UA-cam . Wasn't aware of this album. Stanley was a home-town guy who I personally connected with in the 80s when he was gigging in Toronto. And I met Jimmy Hopps (and shared spliffs) through Vern Martin (another great Toledo musician) when they played with Rahsaan Roland Kirk.
One of the first albums done on the artist-owned Strata East label! Hats off to Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell for creating great music and for creating a label over which artists had full control.
