The "Ambrosian Hymn" is also known as "Te Deum laudamus" or "Te Deum" for short. It is one of the oldest and most important hymns in the Christian liturgy, traditionally attributed to Saint Ambrose of Milan.
Background and meaning
Origin: The hymn was probably written in the 4th century. The exact authorship is unclear, but it is traditionally attributed to Ambrose or to Saint Augustine.
Use: The Te Deum is used in many Christian denominations, especially in the Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican churches. It is often sung on solemn occasions such as thanksgiving services, episcopal ordinations and other special liturgical occasions.
Structure and content
The hymn consists of three main parts:
Praise of the Trinity: The first part praises and glorifies God, the angels, the heavens and the whole Church.
Christological part: The second part deals with Jesus Christ, his work, suffering, death and resurrection.
Petition part: The third part contains requests for God's help and grace.
