  • From one saxophone legend to another... great testimonial from Michael Brecker on his fellow saxophonist and icon, David Sanborn. Taken from Michael Brecker's masterclass in 1984 North Texas State University (NTSU), now called Univ of North Texas. (thanks Bryan for that last addition)

I'll be honest with you, David Sanborn has initially not been a favorite of mine. For my taste as a youngster, (age 15-25) I couldn't get past my ego/taste of just finding his timbre too agressive. But over the past years I have been really appreciating him for what he has done: creating a complete new conceptual approach of how the alto saxophone could be played. You just can pick him out in one note. Period. That is one of the biggest achievements to attain in music imho and he had that abundantly. Like him or not, he has undeniably shaped the direction for all saxophonist now and yet to come.
I started loving several recordings and solos in particular of his the past 5 years, like his pop playing with Billy Joel (Grammy awards ceremony solo on New York State of Mind), some on the classic Brecker Bros albums, in particular the trading with Michael Brecker on "Rocks". Once I got past the "this is not my type of sound", I've found so many other aspects in his playing - not least the immense amount of expression! Thank you sir, you are a pioneer.
And oh yes, those Lethal Weapon films just crack me up every time he entered with his signature sound adding to to comedy of these great films. Legendary!
P.s. I made a silly remake of that icon "Rocks" trading as I imagined how it looked in the studio while recording. After publishing it for like a day I found it to be off limits so it's hidden, but for this occasion... well, here it is: ua-cam.com/video/czotTy4GXkI/v-deo.html

He was my favorite contemporary alto saxophone player all through high school and beyond. Yes it is hard to achieve a sound like his, but that just increased my admiration for him.

This past week I've been on a Sanborn kick, and it gives me fond memories of doing exactly this in high school Going back and listening to Chicago Song, The Dream, Slam, and discovering new stuff like Butterfat and Lesley Ann, it's been really educational taking the time to listen to a lot of him this week.
I've been think about David Sanborn a lot this week and the amount of times I've been asked, or been put in the situation where I have had to either play like Sanborn, or play a solo with a vibe similar to Sanborn far outweighed the amount of times I've been asked to play bebop solos and told to sound like Bird, and this has stuck with me this entire week. He completely changed the game, he put the saxophone back in popular music, and he inspired generations of players.
I mean FFS, here you have Michael Brecker, arguably one of the greatest players to ever walk the earth, and to say Sanborn was his favourite player, because he says more in one note than most people. Sanborn is the only player I know where I know his playing from the first note.
There are about a million guys out there who can sound like Bird, Trane and Stitt but I've never heard ANYONE sound like Sanborn.

    Very cool @SharpElevenMusic!
I was there at that Brecker master class and it was amazing! But oops, it was NOT at University of Texas, it was at North Texas State University (NTSU), now called Univ of North Texas. As a sax student in the ‘80s it was impossible to ignore the influence of Brecker and Sanborn. Both of them had not only incredible technique, but such monumentally unique, personal and immediately identifiable tones. I was always astounded at how Sanborn’s sound could be so bright AND deep at the same time!

Oh my bad, thanks for pointing that out Bryan! Just corrected it.
Amazing that you were there, I've watched the whole tyhing several times and it's one of the best things to live on UA-cam imo. Incredible to see how humble/shy he was in combination with being godlike when he put the sax in his mouth.

@@SharpElevenMusic Thanks man. Yes, Mr Brecker did seem so humble and that’s been corroborated to me by Tim Reese (Rolling Stones) who used to live near Michael and was friends with him. At the time of the master class I think Brecker was doing the Saturday Night Live gig and told a funny story about his first show. It was the famous Eddie Murphy ‘James Brown’s Allstar Hot tub Party’ skit. Michael was in the horn section and he had to do two things he “hated” - wear a swim suit and dance!

Sanborn used a vintage Dukoff Miami D8 power chamber. I have used the same mouthpiece for years. It had lots of power and projection and brightness while also having lots of fullness to the sound. I won't use any other piece. I also use one for my tenor. They are amazing for pop and rock music.

      @bryandickerson5365 Місяць тому

@@Njderig Congratulations on being able to tame the Dukoff! It takes special talent like Sanborn’s to focus all that energy. When I first discovered Sanborn he was actually playing on Brilhart Levelair mouthpieces.

I seem to recall a story about how Sanborn once sabotaged Brecker's microphone at a performance. However I heard this more than a decade ago and can't tell how full of it the story may have been.

@@SharpElevenMusic I doubt too many people would make the Desmond/Konitz connection. Maybe a shot of Dizzy Gillespie with his iconic cheek puffing, and the caption "Miles Davis."
As a side note, I attended UNT from 1988-1993. I used to watch this Brecker video in the library. However, it was a major hassle to get access to it. The VHS tape could not be checked out or leave the building. We would have to ask a library clerk to find the VHS tape, then get a viewing station, and the clerk would play the video. I think I did this twice in all my time there. It blew my mind the first time I saw that the full interview was on UA-cam, and I could watch it from anywhere any time.
