Whats happened is that we have a reached a point where there so many big lads that are seriously good at football that your able to build squads that are able to be threatening at set pieces AND still play good football. The reason why the Stoke/Bolton approach was treated with contempt was it was at a time where we were looking for our teams to play attractive, attacking passing football. And those teams didn't really do that (in fairness, Sam actually did have Bolton playing some good football at times) and mostly just packed the squad with guys that weren't super good at football, but they were big athletic and strong. They would just kick the shit out of teams to stop them playing, hoof the ball long and score corners because they have 8 guys who were big bastards and the other team maybe had a couple of big centrebacks to try and defend. Arsenal were victims of this for years and years and years. They barely had anyone in the squad over 6 foot and most of them were featherlight. They had all the skills in the world but they got absolutely bullied on set pieces because all the tricks in the world aint gonna help when you have that much of a physicial mismatch on a corner because the guys just run in like a train and you aint stopping them. The Arsenal set pieces of today work because they have a massive squad. I think in thier idea first team squad you pretty much only have Saka, Odegaard and Martinelli/Trossard who aren't over 6 foot now.
As an Arsenal support who started watching football in the early 2010s, I never understood how we could be so bad at set pieces. So often we generated 10 or 15 of them in a match and never even got a decent shot on target from them. It's refreshing to see that we've now become one of the best, if not the best.
It's almost un-defender able. Ben White and another player box in the keeper. Big curling cross comes in. 4 Massive players alternate and attack the ball. On top of Jover's brilliance Arsenal has specifically built a team to out muscle and out smart opposition in set pieces.
While Jover deserves a lot of credit, he now works with some of the best aerial players in the PL. So that's not something that other clubs can easily replicate.
I think we have reached the point where any time we get a set piece against an opponent, they panic before we even take the kick. This is absolutely huge. Chaos reigns in the box as soon as the ball is in the air. Most teams just dont know how to defend against our set pieces any more. Saka, told an interviewer that the set piece coach has had him practicing his delivery for hours. Im sure Declan Rice has been practicing his delivery too. Honestly, it makes a lot of sense to practice. In rugby, the goal kicker spends hours practicing in order to maximise the conversion rate. Why shouldnt the same apply in football? The better the delivery, the higher the probability of scoring.
They're doing extra ordinary things. Saka's delivery is key ofcourse and so is the right teammates knowing and getting at the right spot while the rest disguise/faints opponents.

Arsenal’s main secret is literally just Gabriel being good at it. Without him theyd be nowhere near as threatening. Whats more interesting is Brentford’s kickoff routine. You guys should cover that.
They discuss this in the podcast. Nedum (an actual former pro player) thinks it's more nuanced than you make it out to be. You should perhaps give the podcast a listen, you might like it!
