Great to see you in a real game Tony after watching your videos for years! I was hearing your tips while you played and you executed "most" of them! 😉 Very insightful to watch the seniors go at it!
I saw this match....wow....I thought it would be Stephanie Lanes Team doing the lobbing. That Johan is amazing! You have a great teammate when she helps you get dressed during the match Tony!
Finally got around to watching this great match after meeting you at the Open, Tony (I came by on the last day and we chatted while you were packing up and took a selfie)…you are right, Tony, Johann moves like a guy half his age! Great footwork and a very entertaining match to watch. I’ve been watching both yours and CJ’s videos since I started playing pickle a few years ago. Thanks again and great meeting you in person…let me know if you are ever down in Bonita.
Great match. At one point it looked like the reset queen versus the lob queen. The guy in white can sure cover the court. I especially enjoyed the camaraderie among the players.
Incredible soft hands. The guy in white is amazing at getting lobs back...makes it look easy! Surprised that serves and serve returns were not as aggressive as I thought they might be...deeper. Is that a tournament thing...keeping it safer?
I agree with the comment about the guy in white shirt. He gets to everything and his partner is an exceptional dinker and shot placer. Lobbs didn't work very often
Agreed that Johan was able to recover the lobs but that alone is not dispositive. Many attack shots did not work either. Does not mean we stop hitting those attacks.
What a way to end the game. Wow!! And that, folks, is how the pros do it. The guy in white shirt is spectacular. I thought the losing team tried to lob too much and may have cost them a couple of points. The guy in the orange shirt is great, but I do feel he was not 100% confident in his partner, hence some poaching that was unnecessary. Great match, and thank you for sharing.
Hi Dave. The Tyrol outsoles never wear out on me. The shoe will need to be replaced before the sole goes on it. Visit out site WeArePickleball.com. We have a full review of the shoe.
@@BestPickleballCoach Thanks for the last two Pickleball Therapy Podcasts at the Open - GOLDEN. Hope Stephanie didn't fracture too many ribs on that final ATP.
I hate lob shots and really do not like playing in a game with this many lobs. To prove my point, Tony and his partner lobbed the ball 23 times and lost 19 OF THOSE POINTS! The team they were playing had the ability to keep the ball in the kitchen via dinks or resets and dominated the match. Much better skill to be able to drop or dink and make it bounce than playing badminton pickleball with lobs.
I hear you Bruce. But you don’t have a control number. How many of the 23 rallies would we have won without lobbing? Lobbing is becoming a bigger part of the game. Actually Stephanie Lane - our opponent - is the queen of the NVZ lob.
@@BestPickleballCoach I don’t think you need a control number to realize you gained very little by lobbing the ball 23 times in a 15 point game. I think it is an effective strategy a time or two during a match with intense dink battles from the NVZ, but as you said it is becoming a more prevalent. I think it is a crutch for players to NOT develop a drop/reset shot. I see it all the time in Rec play. Surprised 5.0 players would have to resort to this.
@@brucelarison4241 the increase in lobs is at the pro level. Plenty are adding it. My guess is because they are seeing it work - do not think they would use it if the shot were deemed to be suboptimal - those players are fine on their dinks and drops.
@@BestPickleballCoach We’ll have to agree to disagree on the “Pro’s” using it. Maybe in the Senior ranks where mobility may be an issue, I admit I don’t watch many senior pro matches. Johan (in the white shirt) is 55. No way he can move like that! :)
You're funny! I'm 62 and I can move like that (not saying I can play as good as him).
@@kevinyoder1742 :)
he moves well but we have lots of guys and gals at 66 moving as well and better.
@@beyondthepale9071 that is a tough crew
I was thinking as a senior (>65) he was exceptional. But when I read he was 55, I was a bit disappointed. He’s still great though😊👍👍
Wow great players. The guy in the white shirt is insanely good. Gets to every lob and hits it back low. Never misses a drop shot. Good stuff.
The woman is just as good! Excellent hands.
Stephanie is an amazing player. And Johan too. They make a great team together.
It was great to watch anyone, much less seniors, play this well. The volley around the 13:50 mark was pro level stuff!
Ty Robyn. I hope I hit that volley :)

Finishing the game with an ATP, WOW! That was a great game.
Thanks Ralph. Was tons of fun
What a fun match to watch! And looked like it was fun to play. Great points! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Leah. It definitely was great to play it. Stephanie and I are long time friends and always look forward to playing.

Wow! What a great match and a great shot to finish.

Great playing Coach Tony!!

Thanks John. Was good meeting you as well. That is a top 10 match for me in terms of everything
Great game. Thanks for posting. It looks like your strategy against a skilled lobber was to lob first!
Exactly. Plus shifting a bit off the line (me) to squeeze the space. More on that in a future video.
Wow wow wow!! Amazing rallies!
Ty Darci. Was fun
Very impressive!👏
Merci
Just, WOW! Great players!
Thanks Jeff. Was a super fun match the play. Wish they were all like this :).

Awesome ATP to end the game!
Crazy right?

Yes, Johan can cover the court! It was a fun match to play
Nice way to start the match Tony!
Ty :)
Great match
Ty Pete. 💯
Epic ATP on the last shot of the match!
100%
I always have to remember to lob for the back line not over the opponents head! We all hate short lobs😊
Hello Geo Short lobs can be problematic for sure.

There's just not a lot of money in that part of the game at this level.
Fun to watch you play in a real tournament match, Tony! (I think that winning ATP shot was illegal - LOL)
Thanks Randy. I wish it had been :)
that was a good game but awesome ATP to end it..way to go SL!!

What shoes are you playing with? How is the durability on hard court?

Tony you have skills
Thanks Mark :)
Wow, Stephanie, I'd love to play with you again some time so you can teach me how to get the ball to sit on the net!
Stephanie is amazing
Who says lobs don't work? Great game. The guy in white has the end of his paddle above his wrist on his serve. Slow the vid down and you can see it
Lobs can be effective for sure. I’ll have to look at the serve and call Johan :)
Is competition different than rec play regarding the scoring? I thought you win the game at 11.
Is a good question Brian. This was in the back draw of the tournament. Here you play 1 game to 15. In the main draw 2/3 games to 11.
@@BestPickleballCoach Thank you!

I can't get lobs anymore unless it's a bad lob that I can easily reach.
Look at what I did in the match and you’ll see a technique you can use against lobbers
