    The BVK 8 weight is a perfect fishing tool and for that price it doesn't get any better. The blank is realy fine tuned and performs very well. The great thing about this rod is it's action. It is very responsive and you feel it work. Casting wise it is a very fast mid-flex rod. For fish fighting it is a real gem with it's progressive curve and lots of lifting power. It is a real tough rod as I use it most for Carp. Though there are a few short cuts to achieve a $250,- price tag. First the cork handle is made from a very bad quality cork (TFO calls it floragrade haha) and it's quite short. Second the fighting butt is also to short to be functional. And also the reelseat might be upgraded. The rest of the builtquality of the rod is great.

      Just ordered a BVK 7W and can't wait to try it. Been putting it off but now that Lefty has passed on to the great beyond you can't find the BVK series in stock anymore.

    I am new to saltwater angling and recently bought a BVK 8 wt. for the lighter overall weight and a Mangrove 8 wt. for the extra lifting power over the BVK. Both are for an upcoming guided Laguna Madre Texas Redfish trip. My research told me to have a backup rig just in case of a failure. The lifetime warranties and being from Dallas where TFO is HQ'd made a decision on the rod purchases. I bought the lightweight green BVK reel for the lighter BVK rod and the Sage Evoke 8 reel colored in flame and black for the Mangrove. Both reel colors compliment the colors of the rods nicely. Now for some casting lessons and some casting practice....we will see how it goes.

      Matching up the reel and rod, the most important part, gotta get the right colored line too.

      The BVK is a better lifting rod over the Mangrove. The BVK has a much stouter butt section than the Mangrove. The Mangrove is jazz (finesse), and the BVK is rock and roll (power).

    It's really tough to judge a rod as "better" based on 1 caster. There is so much variance in individual casting styles and preferences that if you want to have a legitimate shoot out, you need to do so with as many casters participating as possible. Between those two rods I definitely have a preference, but it's based on my casting style and the fishing conditions I face.

    Timely. Was at a fly show today and looked at several TFO models of 10 wt rods to target False Albacore. I love my BVK 5 wt and 8 wt. But the 8 wt is too wimpy to bring in Albacore fast to release them. thanks

      Using an 8 weight for catching false albies is like taking a knife to a gun fight.

    I've owned the bvk 8 weight... It is not a rod that you want to pull on. 10-15 pound fish, I have snapped it. I have not tried the mangrove, yet. However, I hear the mangrove has a lot more lifting power and I would be more willing to buy one with lifting power in my conditions.

      Dallas, I had heard of people having issues with breakage with the BVK. I got a BVK 8 wt and was a little aprehensive the first time I pulled on a big fish, however I shouldn't have been. Since February numberous redfish between 22 and 32 pounds have been landed on my BVK 8 wt with no issues. If you break a rod fighting a fish, it's user error.

      @@redchaserron 100% agree, I've snapped my 8wt bvk but it was completely my faulty.. as you can see in the video lol drag was cranked down too tight and I was fighting a fish offshore that I had no business fighting with that rod. I think for 8 and below weights its the perfect rod, im in the market for a 10wt TFO so im looking at probably getting the mangrove or axiom II

    What weight is typical for fishing for Bonefish, Permit etc?

    • @Tridentflyfishing
      @Tridentflyfishing  4 роки тому

      Bonefish = 8wt, Permit = 9/10wt... if you're curious about other species, we have a ton of info on our blog... go to our blog, type in the species you're curious about, and 'fly rod for' and you should be able to find them. Here's how to choose the best fly rod for Permit: www.tridentflyfishing.com/blog/how-to-choose-the-best-fly-rod-for-permit/

      do it, you never know what you're going to tangle with in the salt, great price btw

    • @richarde1355
      @richarde1355 3 роки тому +1

      If you can get a deal on the 9, do it; however, if you also have the same opportunity for a 10, I'd definitely get the 10.
      When I go on a salt trip, I take an 8, 9, and 10 for inshore or backwaters. The 9 is the backup to both the 8 and the 10.

    I know this vid is 3 years old buuuut... you are castimg fly rods over a sandy beach, when the ocean was like, 12 feet away. Why not cast into water, instead of shredding your fly line by casting on sand?

    Hatch! I don't think that carbon fiber is real. Dear rod manufacturers, if you're not going to employ the real material, don't include a feature that mimics it, it looks cheesy. Glasses by Maui Jim?
